How To Build a Longboard, Making the Press.

Longboard Technology here to walk you through the process of building your first longboard.
In this video we will be talking about The Press!
I'll be making a simple 2D press in this video, which is appropriate for creating concave through a wide range of materials, including baltic birch, maple, and formica.

You can do it with this, but it will be a little toughter on the rails, and you will have a harder time getting all the shape you want. So this press is made of three rails to do the concave. You could literally add three more rails running perpendicular to them for the camber. So,underneath the two side rails, put a rail going across the center. And underneath the heavy center rail, put two two that go across the ends of the board.

It would work for a pintail. But if you wanted a slight kick, you'd need to do things a little differently. On the tail side, stop the rail ( or rails ) 6 or so inches away from the end of the deck. And wedge the tail up a little bit with a piece of wood. Its a little bit more complicated, so you may want to use three rails instead of just one.

When the middle of the thick board they are using in the center rises up in the middle like a bow.

How many sheets of one eighth inch thick sheets do you usually need to use in order to bend and flex properly without snapping the wood???

My first guess as to why its not stiif might be it didn't get enough concave. The easiest fix would just be to add another 1/4" on to it. Fiberglassing would also be an option, but I think fiberglass is such a hassle.

Go to home depot they have alot of clamps like these in all different sizes. lol Hope this is still relevant a year later.

The center rail is flexing, try a bigger piece of wood, and make sure its on edge. If you can get a clamp in the center of the rail instead of just at the edged, that will work too.

would it be possible to press the board again after it has the concave, in the opposite direction to create camber or rocker? or would that all have to be done at the same time

that was kinda confusing. do you have a video that demonstrates this? or could you make one? because making a longabord with concave and camber has always seamed like a magical thing to me that would require one of those complicated "ribbed" presses.

So, If I wanted to make the board concave AND cambered, would I just make all the pieces to the press concave or do I have to use a dimm press? I was thinking of a 40"x9.5" board with a 0.5" concave and 0.5" camber. What do you think?

In your opinion, is it a bad idea to cut the board before gluing and pressing it? I'd feel safer cutting my board with a laser cutter (for consistency), but I think that would require cutting each layer individually.

Hey love the video first video i have seen that really helps, but my question is, will the concave made by this press remain in a bamboo ply that i bought already made, or do i have to glue my own ply board in order to get this concave

I made a deck with 2 plys 1/4 inch thick each, but the board is way to flexy is there anything i can do to make it stiffer?

What kind of clamps are you using? I cant find any clamps that big. The ones i am using to do this just wont work.

It would work, but you're going to have to need to use a more sophisticated press than the one in this video.

when you were clamping the board, was the glue dry? because you said it would start to in 7 min.

No, you clamp it as fast as you can once its glued.
