I don't know of the woods that are available in Australia. But I do remember seeing Beautiful boards made from wood that was local, so they for sure do exist. I'd search silverfish longboarding forum for discussions on it, thats where I remember seeing mention of it.

Yes, so long as it is maple all the way through, and not just a veneer over some cheap wood. The good maple that you can use for a skateboard usually comes in 1/16" thickness.

Hey OtherPanetsSkate I was going to use Canadian maple to make my first longboard. I chose that wood because I have a landyachtz board which is made of canadian maple. I was wondering if there is any other wood that is kind of the same to canadian maple.

Same as David here only I live in Phoenix metro. I expected having some trouble because I'm looking to go big. I've been looking for your legendary 5'x5' sheets of baltic birch but the closest I've found was 1/8" 3 ply. Not gonna do it. I want to build an almost 60" board so for sure need the right wood. Any help you can send my way would be killer.

I want to make a board that has medium to stiff flex. How many layers of Baltic birch should I use? Would a layer of maple improve the stiffness? Thanks
@LongboardTechnology
@LongboardTechnology 10 жыл бұрын
4 layers would probably do it. Adding a layer of maple ( for a total of 5 ) on the bottom would definitely tip it more on the stiff side. If you got a layer on the top and bottom, it would really stiffen it up quite a bit more. For that I'd use 3 core layers of BB, so you'd still have the total of 5. But the problem with maple is that its hard to get ahold of the right stuff. Many things sold as maple are really a paper thin veneer over another type of wood. The other is that maple is a lot more difficult to press, it requires much better press design.

so, when pressing a board, is it "good practice" to press boards that are slightly longer than the final length demention? and if so, how much longer?
@LongboardTechnology
@LongboardTechnology 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but by as little as possible. Its only to act as a margin of error for poor alignment, and I try not to lose more than 1/8" from cutting in either length or width.

I don't think there's anything you can get at Home Depot that's suitable. But if you can find it on their online store so I can take a look at it, I'll double check. Most things at home depot are just cosmetic veneers over a core.

How many plies of 1/4" baltic birch should i use for a very stiff board with no flex? Please answer.
@LongboardTechnology
@LongboardTechnology 9 жыл бұрын
Depends on the board length, shape, and your weight. 4 sheets is a good starting point. 5 will definitely be very stiff, but also may be unnecessarily heavy.
@Falador-ib3kj
@Falador-ib3kj 9 жыл бұрын
I'm about 150 pounds, and the board is gonna be about 35-40 in. long and about 10 in. wide. I haven't decided on the the shape of the board yet.
@LongboardTechnology
@LongboardTechnology 9 жыл бұрын
4 should be pretty good then. It won't be solid as a rock stiff, but you'l be able to throw your weight around on it without it reacting.

Um, I suggest picking up a phone book and making calls. Its not something you can find online. Look for Lumber Yards, or Building suppliers. If you talk to somebody and they don't have it, ask them if they know where a good place to look would be.

@chainmaillekid
@chainmaillekid 9 жыл бұрын
If fluctuates a lot TBH, and it also varies from vendor to vendor. The most I've paid for is $22 a sheet. But I'd really try to find a source closer to $15. The lowest I've paid was $9, and it was actually the best quality I'd been able to find.

What's wrong with Canadian maple? Heard that's actually a better choice and bamboo? heard it can survive a car being ran over it.
@LongboardTechnology
@LongboardTechnology 7 жыл бұрын
Maple is fine, it just requires a better press and is less forgiving. I don't mention it because its just so much more difficult to find than baltic for most people. Its easier to make one recommendation, than it is to explain all possibilities.
@mikelemon5109
@mikelemon5109 7 жыл бұрын
But what would you recommend despite the fact that it's hard to find each? Maple, Birch or Bamboo it terms of long lasting.
@LongboardTechnology
@LongboardTechnology 7 жыл бұрын
Maple probably. Birch veneer ( not baltic birch which I recommend in the video ) is right up there along side it. All three are perfectly viable, but mostly just give different characteristics. As far as just being long lasting, maple is the hardest, heaviest, and toughest.
