In this video i will show you how to frame in a pool deck with treated lumber. This is part one and goes into detail from digging the holes to assembling the outside frame keeping it 1" under the pool cap. I show you how to notch a 4x4 post and how to to use a joist deck tie as an alternative way inplace of notching the posts.

Nice work. I'm looking at doing the same thing but I think I want to put the deck above the pool rail as most pool rails aren't really load bearing for people to just step on every time they get in the pool. Keeping enough room for the winter pool cover access though makes scense.

Craig - in the event I have to install a new liner, is it still possible to remove the pool caps with the decking so close to the pool? My pool appears to be the same as in your video, and the screws that hold the pool support caps are under the rim.

Cool project, looks like good work. You might have said it and I missed it, but I was wondering why you use only dirt around the 4x4s after setting them onto the footers vs using concrete? Is the dirt sufficient to hold it in place since you made the footer? I would assume concrete around the posts would be better, but I could be way wrong about that. Just curious seems like a cheaper and better alternative if concrete cost can be saved.
@letfreedomring43

This is almost exactly what our pool deck needs to look like. Our existing deck is about 6 feet off the ground. My husband doesn’t want to deal with it nor hire someone so I’m turning to you tube, and you, to learn how to do it myself. Did I mention I’m a hairstylist and have ZERO experience in building ANYTHING. Seems easy enough....I’m sure I’ll do fine. 😂 🥴

I love these videos! In you 1st video, way back when, you say in your plans that it's for a 24' pool. But in a comment to someone, you said it was a 27' pool. If it is a 24' pool, how would I modify for a 27' pool?
@Deckbuilding
@Deckbuilding 4 жыл бұрын
You can use the same plan for a 24ft or 27ft. the only measurement that may change slightly would be one side band going back to the pool.

I have a few questions but my first one is did you use that post hole digger/Bobcat to dig the holes right next to the pool also? is there a difference between not putting posts in wet cement? Does it make it a floating deck or a non permanent structure is there some kind of reason for that? I've seen a lot of people not cement deck posts but just don't know what the reasoning for it is? if you could queue in and let me know I am just super curious. Please and Thanks, your video is awesome! Anyway you could list what supplies you used in the description?
@Deckbuilding
@Deckbuilding 6 жыл бұрын
On a deck or other pole structure you should always dig below the frost line and pour a concrete footing in the bottom of the hole. the posts set on top and the hole is back filled with the dirt removed earlier. If you backfill the post with concrete from below the frost line to the top it could grab the post above the frost line and move it up and down in a winter freeze. As for the the posts being sturdy, the frame ties all the posts together to keep the structure from moving side to side.
@2bamrs
@2bamrs 6 жыл бұрын
Okay, that is something I didn't consider. I live in Idaho so I do have to worry about hard winters, I am definently going to be using your method. One more question for you here Craig! What did your material cost look like when you built this project? I am using the lowes deck builder and its building it a little different than I want it too. Its estimating about $4000.00 (all redwood) does that sound right or a little high?

I absolutely abhor using nails. I strictly use construction lags, they don't rust like nails, and have better shear strength and holding power.
@Deckbuilding
@Deckbuilding 4 жыл бұрын
So no nails while framing a deck, just all construction lags? I'd love to see that video. And you are wrong about the nails shear strength and rusting. The nails used in this video are exterior ACQ and are approved to use with treated lumber.

@williammitchell8247

He did not put any rock in the bottom. The problem with putting a post, even if it is treated, directly in the concrete is that it will wick moisture from the ground. If you were to put a few inches of drainage rock in the bottom you could put it directly in the concrete and would not have to worry about water. It is also a good idea to wrap the post where it meets the soil unless it is treated lumber that is meant to be in contact with the earth.

@Deckbuilding
@Deckbuilding 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, build it the way you see it in the video. For example, it will be way more annoying when the deck caves in because you used screws where nails should go. Screws are not meant to used for sheer strength when a nail is.

Another way....If you use a beam, your joists can cantilever over the beam depending on the type of wood and size of joist. My city allows for up to 24 inches so for instance, you could put your posts about 18 inches away from the pool. Place your double 2x10 beams on top of them and then let your 2x8 or 2x10 joists cantilever to match up to the pool edge. You will need to also add blocking inbetween the joists.
