I have always wanted to try wood bending. Particularly steam bending, so I purchased a Steam bending kit from Rockler and in this video I build a steam box to use with the kit. Next Week Will be my first Steam Bending Project!
Also I have some exciting news to share... Check it out!

John Bump avoid kiln-dried lumber... the kiln-drying process is to detour the lumber from warping... it also hinders the bending process.

Awesome! Thanks a million for making this. It's exactly how I would want this to be as far as materials, time and fuss-free construction. And you're a good teacher because you are capable, unassuming and funny (for me at least - I had a laugh about the weather stripping). Bravo.

5 Star kudos to you Laney. Succinct, humourous, clear. Just bought that Rockler device on Amazon. Will combine formed wood, metal acid etching, welding and artistic flare in support of the creative impulse. Thank you for your forthright demonstration ...

Wow Laney, that box is the cat's meow! I like how you made the legs. Another thought, between steaming procedures, this thing could be modified as a rabbit trap! And I still like the keekers, who think this would be good for hot dogs for a large crowd. Have a good one!

Rick, on the door of the box is a vent hole and in the rear of the box is a "Drain Hole" so the water and condensation that builds up has a place to run out.. So the plastic tray was there to catch the drain water.

very good video, helps so much am using a steam shower generator that the people didn't like in their shower said " it mad them hot " huh ???? anyway, am building an o gauge railway inside my log cabin house that will run through the chimney with an arch bridge in front of the tunnel for a siding or to allow passing trains to not colloid with each on the main line, also i do a lot of custom projects for folks that require bending this will really help in those projects, the simpler the better in explaining things works so much better for people like me that have see and feel what there trying to build it's like " plan it as you go building. " and for the most part it comes out really nice, thanks Kevin

I was considering picking up a used pressure cooker (with good gaskets of course) and then using my outdoor turkey fryer stand and my bottled gas to heat the water inside the cooker. A hose for the steam would then connect to my box. Your plan looks a bit less involved....I need to rethink my original idea. Thanks!

I read that the box don't have to be watertight to prevent pressure build up ,the steam bending process consist on saturating the wood fibers withs a hop vapor with out being under pressure.

Surely there needs to be an air escape to prevent pressure building up? and also prevent pressure blowing steam back into the steam source, traditional steam boxes just use rags to block the majority of steam escaping. Another point would be to watch that the steam doesn't bend/warp the box itself, steel tube works well. I like the idea using the wall paper stripper as a steam source.

I made a steam box recently, i found that having the top removable a big help, also a few small leaks are not really a problem. Bending the wood is the tricky bit, anything above an inch is quite difficult. I am keen to see how you get on. I made some double bow Windsor rocking chairs, what are you planning to make?

I just finished by box but didn't make the hole for the thermometer. It occurred to me, if I see steam coming out of the indicator hole I drilled in the door, it's at about 212 F since that's the temp water converts to steam. So why a thermometer? Thanks. Great video as are your others BTW.

If you do encounter leaks, rather than using tape to seal - which will eventually fail - you can try an old boat building trick and just force some fine sawdust into the area that is leaking. As the wood expands it will seal itself.

I was looking around and have a question about bending wood. I built a steam box. Please excuse my lack of proper terms . I am wanting to bend a piece of wood for sides of a "box" basically a heart shape....I want the front and backs to fit into the sides that I bend. Can I put a dado into the sides of the wood to be bent so that the front and back fit into it so that I can have them even....??
