Good explanation, if only my prof explained it and not just left us with the formula. Also, if anyone is confused about the negative sign: for chemistry we use Q-W= Ek + Ep + H but in physics we use Q+W= Ek + Ep + H

A gas has initial volume 0.2 cubic metre and temperature 290 K and pressure 1 atm. If its temperature is changed to 253 K and pressure is changed to 1.2159 atm the final volume attained is 0.1453 cubic metre . So what will be work done in expansion or PdV work? should we take P=1atm(initial)or P= 1.2159atm(final) to calculate PdV work. Please help ben. Is my question wrong?

7:25 According to my textbook: The mechanical work done on the system is defined as w = - PV, where P is the pressure and V is the volume change and is equal to V2 - V whats goin on?

why 3.6 atm pressure... during expansion the pressure is going to change continuously... so is it that we have to always take the initial pressure for PdV work during expansion???

sir, you discussed about workdone on compression and which W=-P∆V. But You have given a example of workdone on expansion. So, how can this possible that W=-P∆V. I think it will be W=P∆V and not the '-' sign attached to it

The pressure has to be in kPa. That way you don't convert the energy. 1J = kPa L = kPa dm^3
