A quick, simple way to change a front tire on any lawn mower.

I changed both tires myself the last time I put two new tires on the front of my riding mower. It took me several hours to get both old tires off the rim,then used a big flat head screwdriver along with a spoon wrench to seal them back on the new rim. I will tell you this,next time I change the tires on that rider I will just pop the old ones off and take them to my mechanic who said he would mount the new tires for 20 dollars. Saves me about two hours of work and is well worth it!

I'm an ex-Class A mechanic and I've learned a few tricks.... not a good idea to heat the dust caps, they are only thin material and could warp. Instead either spray the sealing point with WD40 and let soak, or cover the cap with a rag, then sharply but gently tap around the edge of the cap with a small hammer or the edge of pliers to 'shock' the dirt loose, then take a medium to large channel lock pliers with a rag in the jaws, grab the cap firmly in the jaws (but don't squeeze) and twist it back and forth to loosen it, then pull towards yourself after it turns freely. For the clip, some are e-clips that can be eased off with a small flat screwdriver and some may need snap-ring pliers. To break the tire beads, don't pound your hands black and blue, just step on the edges of the tire, your weight will do the trick. Mechanics learn to save wear and tear on their bodies as well as how to work quickly.

Wanda, I would add one thing. For the cheap cost it's worth purchasing tire removal spoons which will remove the risk of damaging the tube.

Used your tip to replace the dust cap, but in reverse - sprayed some lube on the inside of the cap, let it soak with a gentle rotation for about 30s and then with applied pressure, a pick, and a little persistence, the sucker slipped right on! Thanks!

For an ex class a mechanic you are definitely not the brightest turd on the pile 🤣😂🤣👍🤟👌. You do not have to take the rim off the lawn mower to change the tire. I'm an ex class a do it yourselfer and I changed and tubed many tires without removing the rim. Even rear tractor tires.

Most online videos that make this job look easy, like this video, are dealing with 2 ply tires. 4 ply tires are a completely different beast... you'll need real tire irons and a lot more umph to get 4 ply tires off and on.

Some useful tips.. - Use soapy dishwashing water for removing and installing the tire to the rim. WD-40 at the very least. - Screwdrivers are too sharp and will cut up the rubber. Harbor Freight sells smooth edge tire spoons for working the bead to the rim.. again soapy water. You can also search common sites for tire spoons for motorcycles $10-$20. - Clean off the old grease on the axle and add some fresh axle grease. 👍

Few suggestions 1.) Dust covers - Use pentraing oil and a rag with some large channel locks to GENTLY twist the cap back and forth to lossen it off, just don't squeeze hard or you will crush/bend it requiring its replacement. 2.) Snap rings - Rather than flat head screwdrivers, try pointy needle nose pliers tips or small punches or jewelry screwdrivers. 3.) Prying - When prying off tire beads, just step on them with a heavy boot to dislodge the bead and use a cresent wrench handle to pry off, as it's smooth. Screwdrivers can damage the bead intergrity causing leaks on your new tire and are wider as well, a pair works great and you can use a rubber mallet to help driver them around the rim if necessary

It is MUCH easier to mount the new tire with some dish soap on the bead of the tire and on the :shoulder" of the rim. Soap on the bead helps it slid onto the rim much easier and on the shoulder of the rim to help the bead slide into place.

Moved from Los Angeles to TN where I now have 1.5 acres and old owners included a Husqvarna yth2246 mower. The backyard is quite sloped and the 2 times ive mowed since being here in some spots with alot of tree cover the ground stays damp well after a rain and my turf saver tires have gotten me stuck in a rut a few times. I imagine I look funny rocking my big butt side to side and bouncing on the seat so i got some more aggressive tractor tread kinda tires that came in today to install on my bad boy.. Been looking at some how to videos on how to do it without a machine, Ive done vehicle tires years ago in auto shop with a machine and ive done my son's bicycle tire but not a ridiing mower tire. I know its the same concept but wanted to see if its worth doing or if a tire shop can throw em on for a $20. Long story short, I tend to ramble on when I have a few adult beverages in me while roaming youtube videos.. i gave you a like for that smooth intro 👍
@HowtoZack2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my video, thank you so much! If a tire shop is willing to do that, and if its more convenient for you I would definitely go that route. If not, its possible using a scissor jack and something heavy. A buddy of mine sent me a picture where a guy positioned a tire he was trying to fit on a rim under a hitch of a trailer/camper. He sat the scissor jack on the tire and cranked it up and as it lifted against the hitch the jack pushed against the tire and sat it passed the rim. I would recommend being careful, but there's definitely a possibility that may be able to help you do it super easy. Take care bud!

Thanks. A few of your tips helped me through this on my rear tires. I just threw some tubes in my tires. The tires were dry rotted, but no amount of slime could seal them, but they had a lot of tread still. I did the same process except I left the inside bead on. When the tubes give up the ghost, I will throw some new tires on. Thank you.

I just changed an old, cracked tire on my dad's riding lawn mower. I used Dawn dish soap and water to seal the bead. And added air to seal the bead. Less hard work for my Portable Ryobi tire inflator to add air with the Valve stem core in. Now i'm going to see if it will still hold air. One thing i like about the front tires on the riding lawn mower is easy to reseal the bead.

Nice vid! I came here to see how to put the dust cap back on.. haha. You can just bounce the tire about once when putting air into it instead of using a strap. That will work on car tires also as long as you have a air nozzle that will lock on.
@jamesglavich14262 жыл бұрын
A little dishwashing soap about 50% with water, just a small brush really helps with demounting and remounting tire. On the dust cap I used a small butane torch to heat the cap a little, just don't get the flame to close. A cig lighter would work also.

I have found for that retaining clip a larger size set of needle nose pliers fits into the voids of the clip and outward pressure did the job for me. I imagine a large set of slip joint (channel lock) pliers would do the job reinstalling em, at least I hope. I sweat like a pig (i may have hyperhydrosis) so seeing your shirt drenched I dont feel so alone now.. getting tools ready for the job i am doin i am already getting hot and moist. When I used to play basketball at the gym people didnt want to guard me because my shirts were literally soaked like i dunked em in water..
