How to Change a Rear Main Seal, Oil Pump and Pan Gasket on a 1988-1998 Chevrolet K1500 (GMT 400)

In this video, we take you through a quick demonstration and explanation of a rear main seal replacement along with the oil pan gasket and pump. The rear main seal is a transmission out job, so if you are doing any transmission repairs, go ahead and do this job too! Since you are here, take a few extra minutes to clean up your other leaks and change that oil pump too. You'll be glad you did, we promise.
Many cars and manufacturers use similar rear main technology, so this job will probably apply to your car or truck.

NICE JOB GUYS!!!!! Seriously, Nice Job explaining the process and the WHY. I'm a retired Shop Owner and I'd like to stop in and buy you all lunch...thing is I don't know where you're located...such is life I guess. What kind of leaks were you getting before deciding to change those gaskets out ?

All of them. It’s a Chevy, so it’s guaranteed to leak from anywhere a gasket or RTV was used. Specifically, the oil pan was wet, the oil lines were a bit leaky at the junction block with the oil filter and the oil was definitely coming from around the transmission plate. It’s one of those jobs that involves changing everything because it’s already apart.

why do seal kits come with a large round gasket?

The gasket is probably for the cover at the rear of the engine, but we’d have to see what you are talking about to be sure. Many of the gasket, seal or o-ring kits you buy from the parts store come with a variety because there are so many versions of engines out there.

How much does a job like this run?

That depends on where you live and where you take it. Expect somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 an hour, probably about an 8 hour job. Parts are fairly cheap though.

So no rtv required for the fel pro gasket? Why is that? The service manual calls for it and i don’t want to do this job all over again if it leaks 😂 but i trust your judgement

Felpro is designed to be installed on a clean and dry surface. It is rubber so it will naturally fill imperfections where cork or paper sometimes fail. Felpro does allow some supplemental use of rtv in specific circumstances, if used sparingly and deliberately it might be ok. www.felpro.com/technical/tecblogs/how-to-properly-use-rtv.html

Ahh yes, the easy way. Never heard of it! But in all seriousness, we already had the transmission out to be rebuilt, so this was a while you’re already here kinda deal. These motors aren’t too hard to pull, but neither is the transmission.
