Appreciate the information on this. Only difference I think should be considered is the positive should be disconnected from the battery, not the negative. Reason; if that positive line that is removed from the alternator and makes contact with any metal on that vehicle, it will ground out the battery and.. well..😱 You don't want that to happen. Always disconnect the positive from the battery. I promise this is the best way to avoid most electrical accidents. Also, if the negative that is taken off of the battery makes contact to metal, it is just like being hooked up to the battery because the body and frame are the grounding network of a vehicle. Get what I'm saying? Just a safety freak looking out for whoever I can. Peace amigo

Probably the best video I’ve ever seen!!! Step by step with all necessary info included, cannot ask for more... I got 2006 Range Rover Sport, doors locks and unlocks by themselves, indicators flashing by them selfs can’t turn them off and car not crank... is that could be alternator as well?

MrCarMAN Hello! Thanks for reply, yes I need some help with this issue I did change battery, brake light switch and bulbs, had instrument cluster checked... Had transfer case module removed, was bit of corrosion on one of connectors, opened case and couldn’t see or smell nothing burned, cleaned and still nothing... is alternator could be bad ??? I wish to know what you think please!

Check the fuses and check for broken wires. If all are good than its the alternator. These cars are super sensitive to voltage irregularities. I had a 15watt fuse blow on the engine compartment and the car threw 12 codes - just crazy. I replaced it and it ran great. My car has 218,000 miles. So things are going to fail. But I cannot complain...the rover has lasted 13 years under city driving and hard driving. I am a happy customer.

That was a good video. I have a question for you. I habe a 2010 ranger rover started to make a clicking sound. People have told me leak in manifold or lifter do u have any input in this.

Hi Ben, it might be lifters or an engine knock. I haven’t heard of a leak in manifold making a clicking or ticking sound

Having 2 people makes the job very easy. U have to pull the tensioner pulley fully with a bar just like how I had done. Then the belt should slide back on easy

if the alternator dies and the battery dies while the car is running, will the water pump still work? I have a 2011 RRS HSE. The dealership left the car idling for at least 30 minutes after the alternator/battery died when they were returning the car to me. It literary died in the service area while picking it up after service with nothing wrong and no signs of power issues when I dropped it off. They are refusing to take responsible and want me to pay $2000 to replace the alternator. I think they most likely shorted something out during the service.

Tensioner pulleys are spring loaded. No need to loosen any bolts or nuts on it.

It’s not the exact same. But 90% similar. The bolt sizes might be different. Let me know how it goes

Would be helpful to identify the engine in the vehicle, I appreciate the procedure is similar but there are several different engines available, might be confusing for some.

Had a bad alternator. No gauge lights for battery, just a limp mode home and dead battery. Old alt was 0 new alt 14.4. Replaced it. Got a new battery also. Hooked it all up and battery light is on the dash. Drove it for 15 minutes, ran great but had the battery light on. Came home parked it, turned it off, then back on and the thing was dead. 2008 Range Rover sport, 4.4. I’m beside myself. Just paid this thing off! I feel the key to the fix lies in the battery warning all the sudden working. Battery fuse on positive is fine. Can’t think of what would draw a battery to be dead in 15 minutes.

Is it an original oem alternator or a refurb/reman one from an auto store?

I went thru 2 different alternators because I was using remanufactured ones. It would work fine for a little bit and then the Range Rover started acting up again. I finally got a original one from the salvage yards out of the same Range Rover sport and since then it’s been running rock solid

Hi Max, I didn’t have loss of acceleration but yes I did have a loud whining noise when my alternator was on its way out

Loud whine is usually a sign of a alternator not able to produce optimal current

MrCarMAN Thanks for your reply, I’ll try and upload a video of the whining noise I get only when I press the gas pedal while moving or neutral. It’s weird even when the video is in park I get the whining noise which feels like it’s coming from the left hand side.

Not going to give you a thumbs down. BUT: the one thing i disagree with is using the alternator as a battery charger. The battery should have been removed and fully charged. Great video otherwise. Thanks for sharing the information!
