Brake shoes operate by pushing a pair of brake shoes against the inside of a steel drum. The parking/ handbrake is connected via the handbrake cable to move both shoes during parking.

Brake shoes can be difficult to understand in terms of the mechanics, but they are quite simple to remove and change once you know how.
In this video I go through the steps I took to change my brake shoes on a Ford Focus 1.5TDCI MK3.5 2015 model.

It's well designed on the Ford Focus Mark's to be a stable unit off the hub, and be able to be stretched over the hub like a tight glove.

Novel idea to use Teflon like that! Great to hear your thinking. I do these every 5? years of so and always forget how to do it. Watched loads of vids. Have heard people say best to assemble on the floor and then install but haven't actually seen anyone do it. How many clicks did you have to raise the handle? Your old brakes seemed to be hardly worn. Great idea to test for the drum overheating. Presumably, like my '95 Fiesta/Courier, there is no slot at the back for adjusting the ratcheting wheel. The only point I'd question is that you say the drum should spin freely. Everyone says it should turn with some resistance, should hear slight resistance. You'd think they'd put a simple diagram in with the shoes --too much trouble for them. Thanks for sharing.

My advice is, if the components are in good condition, then adjust until, it nearly touches, or if it touches - back off a notch or two and let the auto-ratchet do the rest by engaging and disengaging repeatedly on a flat surface. I thought this particular set of shoes was well designed in that it was not in high tension at all when reassembling with new shoes.

Did this and broke the bolts off 😱now the holes are filled and the drum is still on.

Hey there. Great video , thank you for doing it! Happy Easter btw , I had a question about tire tread and what it means if my tread is thinning on the left side of my right rear tire. Would show a picture but not option able.

You may need a rear alignment done. Some cars can change their rear toe angles. Check also springs and shock and tyre pressure.
