How to change Clutch plates on a Vespa NV 150

Although I was planning to go for a clutch plate change on my scooter for a really long time, it became a prime task to do as soon as possible as soon as my scooter started making rash noise as if it's clearing its throat.Needless to mention, the clutch plate was completely depleted and needed immediate attention, and hence this accomplishment.

U asked mechanic Do U need to Put oil on clutch disk? He said no. Im a Trained Motor Vehicle Mechanic and I would say definately Yes, we Should Submerge clutch Disk (liner or plate) in Oil for a short duration at least 5 to 10 min To maximize the life of clutch .Since these Scooters Uses The same Oil (engine oil) for Cooling the engine, Gear box as well as For your clutch System , it quite hard to Absorb the oil To the clutch as the clutch is in the upper portion of the gear box. Its nessary to Submerge the cluth disk in oil because the 2 stroke motor vehicle uses multiple Wet Clutch System. Next Time do Tell ur Mechanic even if He says its not needed. :)

Agree, I always dip the clutch plates prior to installation.

@@BuilditRideit I think u didnt change the Clutch Spring and Clutch piston . Its highly recommended to change the clutch spring and Clutch piston ( A small piston like high ware item made of brass or copper placed before the clutch cover) at the same time when changing your clutch plate. The old spring and old clutch piston makes Hard to hold the clutch. As the spring loose its temper and which becomes harded. Please do change these item when changing the clutch plate. Hard clutch spring can affect the Engine bearing and Crank. Which will later produce Horrible sound .

@@Bengblok yep, haven't done that, but the spring has sufficient stiffness, and piston too looked good. Will double check them next time.

Yes, how ever in certain models they had a clutch assembly that had larger petals compared to the older ones. Best way is to take the damaged one from your vespa to the store, that way they can get you the correct size.

All PX series beaded vespas had wet clutch. You can locate it on the lft side of the engine, between the rear wheel and swing arm. It's restrained using 3 bolts and has a clutch actuator arm attached to the clutch cover. It's convex-circular in shape.

Because of floods in Patna, my scooter was completely sunk. I got the water removed from the engine, but it's smoking excessively now. It never smoked. White smoke. Yes, my Vespa never smoked in a normal run. It only smoked on full throttle and that too a lil or when climbing a slope. Is it somehow related to the clutch? As the clutch isn't engaging very well. I can't downshift easily.

White smoke is a sign of excess oil being used, as there can't be any consumption of engine oil as in case of 4 stroke engines, add just 20ml to a litre that should solve the issue, as of difficulty in engaging gears check and tighten your gear cables, usually they are the culprit. If the clutch it damaged, the bike will make noise as if "coughing" and at high speed(above 60) you may sense a lack of power transfer from engine to wheels,if so then consider replacing it.

@@BuilditRideit Can the smoke can also be related because of clutch being under too much pressure? Which leads to usage of excessive oil.

@@AmolAmrit no, in two stroke engines only gearbox is dunked in oil, the crank case is empty for draft of fuel air mix, and hence chances of oil reaching the combustion compartment is very low, hence it can't be the reason for excessive smoke. Alternatively as you are mentioning, I guess you are either using excessive 2t oil or may be the carb has overflow issue(if so than change the float needle, that should solve the problem), or may be you are using wrong oil.

@@AmolAmrit in my tool kit I carry a pair of plier, double sided screwdriver, a plug spanner and a cross spanner with 10,11,13and 14 mm heads, a thin wire(to clean carburetor). Additionally you can keep a puncture repair kit and a black insulation tape.

How can we identify clutch plates worn-out without opening engine

When you engage you clutch plate there would be a rubbing sound from the engine, something similar to coughing, if so it's time to either loosen the clutch a bit or worn out clutch plates.

Like BIRI says and also when revs increase but speed does not. Mostly noticeable on hills
