I knocked out my first set of rear drum shoes today. It took me 5 hrs ( stubborn drum ). I was a little intimidated at first , but kept calm and the second one was done in a 1/4 of the time from the first. Local garages were quoting me around $185. I paid under $50 and a few swear words. But overall very happy with the results. Thanks Chris for your great how to videos. You are a gift from the DIY Gods. Us common folk are in your debt.

I don't give praise easily. A lot of You Tube content on "How To" has omissions or hyped up tutors, or both. This video was like being in the classroom with a tutor who inspires confidence, and displays obvious understanding of the task. It's been 40 years since I did this job last and was keen for a 'refresher'. This video is perfect. Calm narrative, plenty of detail, and encouragement with additional detail (slave cylinder replacement) if that was also required. There is no rating system for You Tube video's I'm aware of. If there was, I'd give this one the full 5 Star rating.

Ended up getting automatic adjusters from autozone. They were too long! Difficult putting the drums on and scorched the pads for a few miles til I took it to someone and we deduced it was the adjusters, as we compared them. It was only like 2 or 3 threads. We grinded then down and everything has been great since. This guide was a lifesaver.

Excellent Video. Thank you, thank you, Thank you! My 15 year old Ranger has only 85k but recently a brake shop had to replace a rusted out brake line in the back. Ripped me off $$$$ but that's another story. They also claimed that I needed new rear brakes but I declined their further rip-off. I've done lots of disk brakes but not many drums. Got one drum off but not the other. It was stuck to the plate behind it (no movement between the drum and the studs). I pounded on it to no avail and then followed your heating instructions. As I heated it up it made a loud "pop" so I continued all the way around and it made another "pop". It's key you don't heat up the center where the axel comes through. Grabbed it with my thick gloves and slid it right off. The brakes were barely warn but there was a lot of rust etc. I cleaned it up a little and put anti seize compound on the surfaces that were stuck on both wheels and we are good to go for another 100k. Thanks again.

This was very helpful and well done. I have one tip though, if it is a 25+ year old car, which many cars with drum brakes are, you have to be careful when cleaning out the backing plate etc. Old brake shoes often contained asbestos fibers and the dust that has been collecting inside the drums is therefore potentially hazardous to your health. So I always wear a respirator during the cleaning.

Ty. Very thorough video. The best I've come across. Do you have video on removing axle. Im having to replace backing plate for brakes rear drive axle that requires removing axle on my p/u. 93' Chevy Silverado C1500 The videos I've watched are not the year of this p/u. From what I've gathered it requires the removals of axle by draining fluid at plate to differential a bolt a pin and C clip. It looks possible for a limited experienced person as myself but I'm concerned if I do it myself that I do it properly. Thanks again for this exceptional video. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks!

I haven't done drum brakes since I was ~12. Chris explains all this so well that I don't have any worries about passing the shade-tree mechanic gene along to my son (good mother-son bonding :D ). Thanks, man!

Chris, YOU DA' MAN' ! I have been working on rear drum brakes on a '03 windstar. Your video helped me tremendously. However, those damned hold down springs were quite difficult for me to secure, even with the "Special Tool".So,keep on posting your great how to videos!! You are a great resource to all of us regular guys out here trying to make it happen ane save a buck or two.

Hi Chris! You have inspire me to start doing my own maintenance work on my familys jetta 2003 and chevy S10 2001. My first step is to get tools to work with. I have spotted already from your videos that I need a wire brush, a set of screwdrivers, a ratchet with its socket set, a torque bar, a jack and some jack stands. Anything else you think i should look for? I intend to practice your videos on brake, suspensión and fluids maintenance and maybe some detail work after everything else has been takin care of. Thanks for all your videos!

"I'm never gonna wanna touch this again" Chris three years later: "Hey guys, ChrisFix here, today I'm going to show you how to replace your drum brakes on your car or your truck" Just thought it's funny. There is nothing wrong with updating a guide! Thanks for the work. Today I bled my brakes and couldn't for the love of God take off the brake drums in the back. Then hours later after I was done, I realized I left my handbrake on.

I've done a lot of brake jobs over the years. Watched your video 'just because' & wanted to compliment you on it. Maybe should address topic of machining the drums, but it's still very nicely done and a good length for viewers, I think.
