The 2014 - 2019 Suzuki DL1000 V-Stroms all have the same oil change procedure. If you fall into this category, this video should help you get started on doing your own maintenance.

Shell rotella 10-40W for diesel engines was recommended by most on the Vstrom forums.

Yes and I read through so many of those forums. I don’t think the price difference is worth it nowadays.

Good instructions, I'll have a go at changing the oil on my 2016 bike. I was thinking of trying a fully synthetic oil, do you get smooth gear changes with the Motul 7100?

Thank you! I would say the gear changes are as smooth as they get. Still a slight clunk from N to 1st, but think that’s normal.

Hello, thank you for your tutorial, I got my 2019 V Strom 1000 DL at the turn of the year and would like to know if you have a video for what kind of maintenance is required such as fluids and things that need to be serviced and replaced. I appreciate the help. THANK YOU 😊

Well for the most part the maintenance between 2019 and 2018 should be the same. We have videos of brake maintenance and some other things. There’s also a video where I show step by step how to remove the fuel tank to access the air filter. Hope that helps!

Great vid buddy! I have changed oil myself for Motul 7100 but it seems to me the engine is a bit more noisy then it was before with orginal oil (I guess Suzuki one). You think it might be a reson for that?

It could very well be true. I haven't used the factory Suzuki oil for a very long time, so I don't remember what it sounded or felt like. My bike does have the notorious clutch chatter when in Neutral gear. Perhaps OEM oil would make it quieter, but at the moment I'm not too concerned about it.

hello, i have the 2021 650 and am thinking of running the motul 10w50 during the summer heat. the 10/40 seems very thin in hot conditions. have you tried a different weight? or have any thoughts about how this might quiet the engine down and offer better protection?

Honestly, I would keep using what Suzuki recommends. We live out in Kansas where it’s often 100° F or more in the summer and I’ve never had any issues with engine heat. I also have ridden in temperatures below freezing with no issues at all. Just my recommendation.

How much different is this to a 2003 model?

The 2003 Vstrom 1000 is similar with oil capacity being 2700ml w/o filter and 3100ml with filter. But I have seen people state that their older Vstrom's used 2900ml instead of 3100ml. You will also need a 14mm Socket for the oil drain plug, instead of 17mm. Oil filter remains the same, as far as I know.

@@1LiterADV Bro I could come up with ideas all day lmao. Mpg videos without the fluff, tear downs, sprocket gearing combinations. Gear testing like crash bars, luggage bags. Lots of good stuff you guys could do. Either way keep it up, you'll come up with good content.

If you follow the instructions for the OEM filter you’ll see why a proper tool is necessary to remove and install the oil filter. Whether it’s a strap wrench, socket type etc..
