Time for an oil change on new blue, my BMW Z3. We will use Mobil 1 full synthetic oil and a Wix filter. Please stick around to the end, as this seemingly simple project has a few hiccups!

Love your Z3 passion, videos and sense of humor. I never thought of using a dipstick filter, is that oem or one of Billy's designs? Instead of using a metal pick to remove the O-rings I always use a toothpick. Plastic is tougher than the toothpick is my theory...

Jimmy- thanks for the kind words! That's Billy's! I'll try that next time; I haven't scratched the plastic yet, but knowing me I will. I have, however, injected used oil into my finger with the damned pick multiple times.

Mark, thank you for all your Z3 videos, they are very instructional and easy to follow. I own a 2000 Z3-6cyl automatic for over 20 years and your videos have helped me do some needed DIY repairs/fixes. I am about to change the engine oil by myself for the first time and I was watching this video so I could learn to do it the right way. However, I am not sure if my eyes were deceiving me or not, but I noticed that to remove the oil pan drain plug you turn it the opposite way (to the right) to loosen it and to the left to tighten it. Is that correct? I want to make sure I do not strip the threads on the oil pan drain hole or plug. Thank again for all the help.

Ill have to watch it again later but im pretty sure its righty tighty lefty loosey (standard). I havent removed it since that video, as i use a vacuum pump now and pull oil from the dipstick tube.

It does look in the video like im turning in reverse. I may have filmed in selfie mode? No other source shows reverse.

do you feel confident you drained all the oil out of the crankcase with the car on an angle while on the rhino ramps? i put my car on the ramps to loosen the drain plug then drove it off the ramps so it would be level while the old oil drained. it was a pain :) . i also was disturbed to find a fair amount of metal flakes in the oil :(. i don't see any on the dipstick but the drain pan had a bunch similar to metal flake in a paint job.

Gil, actually, less confident, now that you mention it. Although the new oil is still very clean, which would lead me to believe there is not much old oil mixed in. I ran a magnet through mine to see if I had metal shavings,; didn't really come out with anything significant. Sorry I didn't show that in the video, it was running a little long already.

Drain plug washer replacement. As I remember, I kept the old one in and just double checked for leaks. Which you'd do regardless of using the old or new one.
