How to check for spark on your 1/5th scale R/C car

So you just plunked down a grand on your new R/C rig and it won't start, well let's start with the basics...
In this video I will demonstrate the necessity for a spark tester.

Hello, I have a new Rovan 1/5 scale 5B which I can't get to start. I know might have flooded it but I've purged out the fuel and still won't start. So, I've purchased same tester setup that you have here. Set the gap up and yank on the pull start w/ ground clip connected to chassis screw. What I am not sure about is what the arc should look like. I do notice a tint of blue streak but not consistent on each pull.

Sure, you can check it even better with your index finger. Make sure you give the recoil a really HARD yank.

hi iv got a 1/5 HSP 26 cc buggy an iv got no spark so i put new plug in it but it still wont fire up , do you think it is the COIL not working ???

hey the wires on the engine kill switch does it matter where the red or black goo??

LoneWolf no it doesn't. but red is closer to the engine in the factory losi cy29rc.

How do you fix a motor that ran straight gas in it lol not say in I did or anything lol but still just like to know .thanx

Jimmy Roberts There's not much fixing that can be done if it was ran w/o oil... The crank, crank bearings, piston and head would probably be about shot. Time for a new short block. Put oil in it lol.

What is a safe color for a 1/5 scale spark plug after running. My car runs great but when I take the plug out it's light gray that's telling me it's a little lean if I rich in it the car runs like absolute crap

In a 2 stroke, i tune it by ear. I personally dont really care too much about plug color. As long as the plug isnt glazed over and white, id say your running just fine!

iv put a brand new coil & spark plug in my 26cc HSP 1/5 motor but still no life in it , what eles could it be ?? it has spark at the plug & fuel ..................................

I can see my plugs still sparking after being wet from fuel.

I jave no doubt of that. But a plug sparking in free-air doesnt have the force upon it as a plug in the head with compression, and air and fuel spraying on it at the speed of sound. That violence tends to "blow the spark out". It happens a lot in forced induction systems. Instead of trying to one-up me, or make me look incompetent, do some research on the internal combustion engine. Btw that was a free video i put up 15 years ago, that helped MANY new to large scale rc owners. Just sayin... Js.

@@Poopdogsays I’m not trying to one up you. It was more of a question if my plugs were still good. I’m struggling to get an engine started once it warms up. It doesn’t matter if I toss in a new plug. In short yes, the video helps.

@@Js_junkyard most of the time if it refuses to start once its warm, its usually the fuel cap isnt vented causing the fuel pump to starve causing the carb to lean out. Next time you run it, after it shuts off, or if you shut it off, open the fuel cap. If it hisses, the cap isnt vented, therefore the fuel cap is causing a vacuum inside the tank, which is causing the fuel pump to longer pump fuel and starving the motor. Daves discount motors, or ddm.com sells vented caps for 15 bux or so. Sorry for being a dick eariler, i get so many keyboard commando's talkin smack in the comments, after a while it gets old and i attack first. My appoligies. Lemme know if you have any other questions.

@@Poopdogsays I have the DDM vented cap. Edit: I want to point out that it is only the vented cap that leaks fuel if I tip the car upside down to dump excess fuel from the crankcase. I’ve yet to see anything come out. No hard feelings, my comment did seem rude.
