Let the car idle for 5 minutes before checking the oil. Turn off and wait another 5 minutes. Checking the oil first thing in the morning when the oil is completely cold can lead to incorrect readings.

QUESTION, rule of thumb I have constantly read is change full synthetic every 5000 miles . HOWEVER if you check the oil and it looks decently clean and it's been 5000 miles does it still make sense to change the oil even though it's reached the 5000 mile mark???

Decently clean doesn't mean the oil is good to go. Remember oil oxidation occurs during those times. Honda oil change. Normal: Every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) or 1 year. Severe: Every 5,000 km (3,000 miles) or 6 months.

Wait an hour or so for the oil to pool down to get an accurate reading. Turn the stick from side to side to see where the line is. If it still looks like the whole thing is oily, then you’re probably good!

do you check the engine oil when it is cold? or when its hot and how long do you wait after the engine has been running?
@smallsimplestuff27919 ай бұрын
You can check it when it’s either hot or cold, but I’ve found that to get the most accurate reading it’s best to wait until the engine is cold. Usually about 10-15 minutes should be long enough.
@TheStarwars20117 ай бұрын
When its cold, when it is hot it isnt an accurate reading because the oil gets distributed throughout the whole engine, so it may look like its full when hot, but in reality, its because the oil is flowing

Sir, can we pour engine oil in dipstick placing hole from where we check engine oil level?? Sir plz answer
@smallsimplestuff2791 Жыл бұрын
I believe that yes, you can since the dipstick goes directly into the oil pan. Pour it in slowly so that it doesn’t spill. Using a small funnel might be helpful. This can take a lot longer but should still work just fine.
@caddyrack Жыл бұрын
Do you know how small is the hole for the dipstick? You'll probably spill 90% of it. There is an appropriate cap to remove and fill the oil. But, if you THINK you can use the small hole...go right ahead. You're splitting hair with an axe..

@smallsimplestuff2791 Жыл бұрын
Check it when it is cold. If your vehicle has been running, turn it off and wait about ten to fifteen minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan. It is also important to park your car somewhere decently flat. Good luck!
@connor3288 Жыл бұрын
I really don't think it matters in most engines. Never heard hot or cold mentioned in an owners manual or service info. For transmissions it def matters.

@@smallsimplestuff2791 You don't have to wait 10 or 15 minutes, when the tech do oil changes they ran the engine for 30 seconds and then check the oil level after 30 seconds. @@smallsimplestuff2791 Fair enough, I've been a mechanic since 1970 and taught automotive repair for 30 years, there is another genius by the 'handle' of Farhan that quotes that you can put oil in through the dipstick. Is the car on or off?
@smallsimplestuff2791 Жыл бұрын
Usually off. Depending on the age of your car, you might need to turn off the car and let the engine cool down long enough so that the oil can flow back into the oil pan. This will allow you to get an accurate measurement. Usually about 10-15 minutes will do. With newer cars, you can probably check it while the car is running just fine. You can double check with an experienced mechanic or just turn off the car and wait a few minutes just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps!
