Today we take a look at how to choose concealed cabinet hinges and we make a hinge jig, or template, to aid in the installation process. This jig didn’t take that long to build and not only did we use free scraps to make it, it should last a long time, saving time and money in the long run. There are links below for all the things we used to get this done!

Good tips. I use the easy disconnect Blum hinges. One tip you could try is using a straight edge across both hinge bases as you screw it down as that also helps to keep the pivot perfectly aligned. I think I will make some jigs like yours.

Very clear and sensible. The templates are clever, and would be very useful if doing a lot of doors. What I most liked was the visual discussion in the beginning where you show how things fit together.

I did just use the Kreg jig for drilling the holes for the Blum hinges. Worked great. I did not use the two little holes to locate the screws to fasten the hinge but rather placed the hinge and used the pilot bits you showed. I do not build anything for a living so the Kreg system is fine.

Okay very good info thanks, because hinges come is such a variety of styles and quality you could do a weekly video on that by it's self. And buy hinges from Amazon or China for lower cost some do not come with any INFO , so your setup (jig) could be a good starting point to have. I was looking for so information on how install a set cheap hinges and found a PDF from Blum that is 110 pages long (Concealed Hinges) so your help in this area is very much needed. Thanks for your time that you give to help newer wood workers. Mr D. Forth Worth TX.

After buying one piece surface mount soft close hinges and trying to install and adjust them, I'll gladly pay the 50% premium to use a quality hinge. For me, I went with Blum, yet the biggest reason was they adjust three ways and you can remove the door from the cabinet by un-clipping the hinge from the mount. I did shell out $30 for a Kreg concealed hinge template, which worked great. I made my own mount hole guide versus paying $8 for one, but I had the material and it only took an hour. One problem I did run into was that the package said they were half overlay (3/4 cabinet), but they only overlayed a maximum of 5/16 and I needed 3/8, so I'm figuring that issue out. Don't go cheap on your hinges!

Love the templates. I will try to make mine out of aluminum possibly since I am a fabricator by trade. (maybe even adjustable..?) I watched another video earlier which was kind of hoaky. Although, one good thing I did take from it was (on the door side) pressing a straight edge against both hinge flanges to square them instead of trying to eye ball them or having to layout the screw holes by hand. Not sure that will make sense when reading...

My question is, can i remove the existing 90degree hinges and replace it with a 165-180 degree hinge? Do i have to remove both the mount side and the hinge side? Thanks in advance

Great info and I loved the self-centering bit info. Will the insert hinges work on 3/8 inch plywood? sometimes the foster point can go through the door? I can only use the 3/8 thick material to build the little library project. Loved all the teaching here... And making a jig saves a bunch of money here, esp. when you only need it for ONE project!:) Cheers and thanks so much!!

Awesome video, Jodie, as usual. Lot's of tips that are useful for other tasks. One thinge you didn't explain was how to calculate the length of the cabinet template (you just gave the length you built). I presume that the cabinet template should be twice the overlay shorter than the door cabinet template. For example, if there is a 3/8" overlay top and bottom then the cabinet template should be 3/4" SHORTER than the door template. Correct?

I think Blum is probably the way to go if I had the choice. A lot of times to save a couple bucks I use the Everbuilt ones (I think that's what they're called) and I've never had any problems. I think the biggest advantage to Blum is just the ease of adjustments like the cam adjusters and snap-together door-to-carcase assembly. But maybe it just depends on what level of hinges you get too.

2:44 which hinges are these? Will they be strong enough to hold a 24" x 80" closet door, if I get enough of them? Where can they be purchased? Thank you so much!
@VelvetCrone
@VelvetCrone 3 жыл бұрын
that depends on the material the door is made from (ie; its weight, for example solid mdf is a little heavier than solid plywood, but a pine shaker panel door will be lighter) you might need 4 hinges per door for a closet door. It's usually the case no matter which hinges you use - but a good Blum hinge, will handle the weight of a large door better than the cheaper ones, but is still reasonably priced, readily available everywhere, in case you need a part later.
