After my video explain deck choice, I wanted to cover what is, in my opinion, the next most important item for skaters: SHOES! This video is about types of shoes, how to choose them, and one little tip I’ve been using to extend the life of my shoes. I hope this helps you out.
Please let me know which tricks you’d like to learn in the comments. Thanks for watching. This playlist contains all of my previous trick tips:

To this day, I still don't understand how I skated in D3's 😂. Also may I say since getting back into skateboarding, you've become a huge inspiration. I feel like we're around the same age but your skill level is crazy. As we say in the bboy world, you're my OG.

Honestly you're by far the most pedagogical skater out there, every time. Thank you for making this video about shoes. Is there anyway you could consider making a video about the best mental state to skate in? The mindset it takes to attempt and commit to difficult or scary tricks. I have been stuck on certain tricks for over 4 months and I know it is a commitment issue because I already know every detail that goes into those tricks...

I learned the meaning of pedagogical after watching a Simpsons episode. Happy to bring out verbosity in my comment thread. I’m still afraid of certain tricks. Even ones I do often. Pushing through the initial tentative feeling is a big part of the fun for me. Breathe deeply, bite down, and tell yourself you’re landing the next one, in spite of possible injuries. The moment I’m able to come to terms with possibly maiming my body, is typically when I land tricks. You’ve got this.

I had no idea why I quit spraining my ankles. Makes perfect sense. Thanks for the vids as always.

I made that connection a while back. I just remember having a sprained ankle all the time. Catching the bus to school, limping around 😂 Same for most of my friends. I noticed that the kids around me now, learning to skate, never seem to suffer this injury. The tricks kids are trying are more difficult. So you’d assume sprained ankles would be more common. But, I realized that everyone’s board is bigger, and shoes are a slimmer profile. Meaning more room to land, and less bulk/weight to impede movement.

I skated religiously in my early teens and stopped right at 16. Now 28 getting back into it all, your rookie mistake videos has been a huge help. With the new setup up for about a week and half now I stomped a couple Ollies off the curb today! Took a lot from what I learned from your videos and applied , it worked.

Hey, I tore a few ligaments in my front foot ankle a few months ago, and I’ve had a slow recovery and keep spraining my ankle. Is there any advice or tips you can give me to help it heal faster and prevent from spraining as easy?

Really sucks to hear. Ankle injuries are awful. Have you gone in for physical therapy? The exercises I was given paid dividends. I went for a month, bought the same gear they had me use, and kept doing the exercises at home.

I disagree with some of your points but it is definitely a matter of preference. I started skating in 2001 where cupsole shoes were a big thing but vuls were on the raise. So I started skating any kind because I chose shoes depending on the style. I rolled my ankle with vulcs or cupsoles both ways really bad. One of my favourite shoes were the original Rowley but I also loved bulky DC's. Nowadays I can say vulc shoes became much better in comfort. But I found that for skating flatground and doing flip tricks I prefer cupsoles because vulc shoes have actually too much grip nd my concistency suffers. The gripfeel and boardfeel preference really depends on what tricks you do. Also are cupsole shoes nowadays are also engineered in a way that these are slimmer and have more bordfeel in the toe area. So cupsole definitly can be a bit of a hybrid of slim and protected with a sole that has not too much grip.

My half cabs and my AVs both seperated where the bottom and the sole meet. Shoe Goo, gorilla glue expands while it cures. FP makes good insoles. The shoes aren't bad, the sole however is week. I have a hole in the bottom them the shape on my big toe.😂

Whoa! I’ve had my toe bust through the bottom before. Used to get shoes from Supra. There was one particular mid shoe, it had the worst sole. Busted through so many.

In the same video you claimed to not know about the scientific breakdown of the physics of compression when you land on a shoe insole, and go on to claim that scientific tests of dropping eggs on them is an invalid gimmick ... Come on man, I just recently found you and see you as the wise skate guru you are, but this is hogwash and you know it.
@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods Жыл бұрын
You missed what I said. The test IS a gimmick. Dropping an egg on the insole has ZERO relevance to how the insole would subtract from the force created by a human body, jumping off a set of stairs, with the sole connected to their foot. Also, I’ve skated the soles, and others. In my experience they: 1) had less success than Excetera (defunct), Old Bones, Remind (what I’ve risen for years) 2) lack the extra stability that some of those other insoles provide (accomplished using multiple materials). 3) last a lot shorter. So, I don’t need to know the exact breakdown of the physics. I have experience with the insole, and which demonstrates the irrelevance of that gimmicky marketing tactic. This video wasn’t merely an insole vid. Otherwise. I would have spent longer on this.
@justinmusicandskateboardin9282

@@NormanWoods Well first I appreciate the response and these videos. I shouldnt have even said the egg test, I just referenced that because you referenced that, I'm more thinking of the demonstration where they straight up drop bowling balls on it on a sheet of glass and the footprint insoles are the only brand that the glass never breaks. I don't claim to necessarily know the exact breakdown of the the forces do or don't get absorbed by the sole instead of your body either, but to dismiss how clear and decisive that demonstration is at how much more their material absorbs force seems obviously wrong to me. And as for anecdotal experience and evidence, it's the brand Jaws uses and uhh, I would certainly hope he is using the best material he can get. I had a knee injury (likely torn meniscus) from a pretty meager amount of air about a year ago and regret not looking into insoles before that, but since then I've bough the footprint insoles and I think they make a huge difference, the material really feels unique and I feel like they definitely absorb a ton of shock I would otherwise be taking from any other insoles.
@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods Жыл бұрын
@@justinmusicandskateboardin9282 Those tests show that memory foam absorbs shock. Still not relevant, considering when you skate using them, their tied to the bottom of your feet, and impact comes from multiple directions. For the tests to be scientifically applied relative to skateboarding, they’d have to use a methodology that replicates the conditions and factors occurring during a skate trick. As for Jaws, he jumped down huge gaps long before his endorsement deal. Skaters will skate whatever they’re paid to, or get for free. Not to mention, he could be using anything while skating, and we’d never know. Eric Koston and others endorsed Royal trucks for years. But, you’d only see Royal trucks on their setups in ads. They skated Independent and other brands the rest of the time. It’s all marketing. I’ve skated FP. For me, they were a bit better than stock. But didn’t feel comfortable, keep my feet stable, or prevent heel bruises. The shape and feel weren’t right for me. I’ve heard the same from others. Also, heard from people who like them. I don’t recommend anything that didn’t work for me though, and those tests are not scientific. Just the same Edward Bernays inspired marketing gimmicks we’ve been getting from brands for decades. But if you like the way they feel, you should keep using them. I tore my meniscus as well. I think I had Dr. Scholl’s in. But that injury usually isn’t from impact. Mine was sustained stepping off a rail and twisting.

@@NormanWoods Ya that all makes sense, perhaps I'll give some other insole brands a try at some point in the future. I wish some company used a humanoid shaped robot with force sensors in their joints or something to actually test this stuff. Thanks man
