This style of boot was used by the French Army for many years, only being replaced a few years ago, They were called " Ranger Boots " being styled after a US WW11 boot the M43 ( from 1943 ) The earlier French boots like your pair were Brown and later models from the 1960's onwards were Black. Nice Job on the restoration

These boots are called "BMJA 52" for "Brodequins de Marche à Jambière Attenante modèle 1952". They were distributed to french troops, starting with paratroopers, progressively from 1955 on. From 1961 on, they were replaced with "BMJA 52 mod 61" (still brown thick leather, main change was 1-piece uppers) and later "BMJA 65" (lighter black leather, glued outsole). Unless there are markings inside prooving otherwise, or some witness account, there is no way to assert this pair of boots was used in Algeria. But these are indeed Algerian-war period boots. When the leather is conditionned and soft, these boots are comfortable. But we usually got them dry and stiff, with not much info on how to condition them. First hikes were a real pain in the... heel.

I restored my rangers with neatsfoot oil. A pair swallowed over 3dl of that stuff. I applied it three separate sessions over a period of 12h, so that the stuff would not to clog the spores. Let them settle over the night after the last aply, and they became just as supple as new leather. I have wore them almost 4 years since, and the leather just keeps getting better. The leather is avesome.

You really need to get into the seams and the sole stitching to waterproof them and preserve them. Furthermore for a first treatment leather oil is advised, apply it to the inside aswell. (especially the insole)

You can still see the wax build up on them. You'd need something a bit more heavy duty to really agitate and scrub the wax off the leather. It's been on there so long its going to be tough to get it off. Good job for what you did though. Hopefully they have some life left and that rubber don't crack!

Originally this boot wasn't brown? Looks like it was waxed black.

Only amateurs apply conditioner and wax with their bare hands. Use an old tooth brush for all applications then buff it out with boot brush.
