How to climb vertical faces on a dirt bike! A small vertical face, vertical rock face, undercut log or a short steep climb is quite easy to ride up, but as do vertical climbs then your front wheel you'll need to use trials based techniques like the punch technique to get up them successfully. This is also useful for undercut logs as the bike literally jumps in the air. Before attempting vertical faces, we recommend you first try some steep banks that aren't quite vertical. We've done a training vid on these. Next learn the basics of the small practical wheelie, and the log punch techique. Then you can start on climbing vertical rock faces, vertical faces or very steep climbs.... short ones! A common theme that stands out for almost every top extreme enduro rider is they are former expert trials riders, and cut their teeth on extremely challenging terrain and undercut logs riding ultra light weight bikes. In fact, most of these guys will say the key to learning to ride fast is first slow down and get your fundamental techniques right for vertical climbs. Of course, we'll never get anywhere near the top riders, but there's a lot of satisfaction in doing things you saw as impossible only a year ago like undercut logs or vertical rock faces. Keep your body in the default body position to weight the rear wheel. Jarvis once said going fast is the easy bit, it's the slow stuff that takes skill and we've grown to love the challenge of riding tough terrain with skill, instead of just roosting and sliding our way around easy tracks. Remember to weight the bike or you won't get enough bounce upward. This technique will be invaluable if you get into any serious endurocross or hard technical riding. A huge thanks to our northern BC volunteers for not only spotting but having a go at this face too. Hearts of gold, balls of steel! See the compressed suspension? If you'd like to give cross training a try, we've listed all training vids to date on your website and feel free to subscribe to this channel for new ones in the near future.

You can use the punch technique for these vertical faces. We became addicted to watching extreme enduro vids and found this both inspiring and deflating to watch riders like Jarvis, Walker and Birch doing the impossible like these rock faces or undercut logs so easily. You can use the same technique to vertical climbs on rock faces or undercut logs. The past few years Graham Jarvis has been the king of the extreme enduro world, and we've even started our own religion based on his teachings. We even got to ask his holiness for some riding tips. Birchy was a massive help with learning the punch technique for vertical faces. Another former trials rider, Chris Birch was arguably the world's top extreme enduro rider in 2010 and has been travelling worldwide coaching since then. He confirmed that most of what we were learning was accurate, and showed us enough stuff to keep us busy well into the future.
Ride in slowly to the vertical face you want to climb with the punch technique, speed will just mess things up. If you start with smaller vertical faces and work your way up, it's surprising how easy it can be to do faces that are taller than your front wheel. I was pretty excited about making it up. The height of the obstacle should be the same distance you start your wheelie. But bit by bit we are making progress, and have been making some of the dodgiest enduro training vids in the history of motorcycling.

I'm glad you showed all the failed attempts at the end. That shows that it's not as easy as it appears. Sometimes more can be learned from watching improper technique than watching it being executed perfectly. Good job!

Loved seeing a new training vid. I’ve missed them. Don’t get me wrong, I love the riding vlogs, but I love havin someone explain the techniques to me. I’ve wondered a few times if you’ve ever wanted to go back and re-film different training aspects as you’ve ridden more and maybe even changed your approach to different techniques?

I love the 3rd person persective too. It's much more informative than watching from the POV of the rider. I think it would be extremely hard to do but I'd love to know exactly what their hand controls are doing during some techniques as well. How much throttle, how much clutch, etc.... I'm glad Barry said on this one that he wasn't using the clutch at all, that it may not be proper technique but that you can do it without worrying about the clutch. That stuff is helpful.

This was the best vid I’ve seen on this and I’ve watched a lot. What I really appreciated was both the successful and fails. Really. Seeing the common mistakes was just as helpful if not more than the actual successful runs. Watching enduro legends make it look easy can then feel very disheartening when your own bike doesn’t pop up. Thanks a ton!

Justin F 2nd for sure. 1st is scary on my machine, especially if I have to stay on it as he says in the video. I don't have that kind of crazy control yet.

temperance yeah I have a 250xc I’ve ridden 300s they definitely have some more bottom. For most log crossings and stuff I am in 2nd and use some clutch and either do a double blip if I have run up and soils good or just a punch

Just in case somebody has a tip, when I stand up, my knees get very close to handlebars making it hard for me to get enough leverage to turn them in some terrain. I've gotten the handlebars as much in front and up as my cables allow for and pegs as low and back as I can without major investment, but if anybody knows of another easy trick to get around this, I'd love to hear it :) .

I've checked that a while ago, even saved it, as it is really helpful with the 3rd person shots, bar raisers video helped as well, it does great at summing up the negatives (well worth it for me :) ).
