Double unders are frustrating - both for the athletes trying to learn them and the coaches trying to teach them! It's not as straightforward as getting fitter, or as predictable as gaining strength. So when my buddy Jake reached out to me for help with his dubs, I immediately agreed - as long as he agreed to it all being filmed!
I want to show you a progressive, step by step way of coaching (and learning) double unders that takes away the frustration, and gives your athlete mini goals to hit along the way. This video is ideal for the athlete who can hit maybe one rep at a time, on a good day!
Here are the levels I teach Jake in the video:
0:00 Intro - who is Jake?
2:05 Jake's first double under attempt
2:30 Level 1: Hear the rope clicking
3:00 Level 2: Check your jump mechanics
3:40 Level 3: Keep the rope spinning
5:10 Level 4: Increase total double unders with singles between
6:25 Level 5: Reduce the singles between doubles
9:20 Level 6: Two double unders unbroken
11:20 Level 7: Penguin claps for timing
14:40 A progression: double under complex

I have a big question that no one has answer to. I am 106 kgs and have flat foot. Although i have started wearing flat feet insoles, single unders hurt my muscles after 200. And, when I try double, i have to jump higher. I want to know if I should be practising double unders or give up till i lose weight. PS: I am not losing weight despite regular workout and healthy meals. It's my sleep that's hurting and resisting weight loss.

forth month into crossfit, started my journey with DU 3 months ago while being 103kg x 1.83m. Today I did 30 DU unbroken, after the daily workout, and now I'm looking forward for 50! There is a LOT that goes into learning DU, but best tip is just to practise practise practise. Buy your own rope, adjust to the correct lenght, and every time you go to the Box spend 10 minutes before or after the WOD only on DU.

How important is for me is to lessen the sound of the rope in the ground, it helps a lot!!

I’ve been practising for months now and I’m really struggling. I just keep doing a fast single so wonder if it’s my wrist action/hand speed - please help! I’ve tried everything and watched so many videos!

Jake: Just my two cents worth...I think that beanieguy needed to work on his rebounding jump, and then smooth single under FIRST. As you saw...when you asked him to do fast single unders...he didn't have that. Also, his wrist-work...versus forearms...needed some help, too.
