When you set up the hurdles for beginning training, how far apart do you set the hurdles?

I generally start with 20 feet and progress from there.

Hey I have trouble translating what I work on in practice to track meets .. when I get into track meets and the gun goes off my hurdle form goes out the window and my arms is all over the place. Is that possible to get rid of my arms being crazy at the meets ?
