same, i think you only get a 50% of the writers share, other 50% gets the artist, and no publishing, so you get 1/4? but im very unsure about this

Am I missing something? This is titled "How to collect royalties as a producer" yet you and the other guy only talk about collecting royalties as an artist. What do you do as a producer, where you're not uploading music to streaming platforms, but artists are uploading music using your beats?

Great video. I've unfortunately been slack on some of this for years and finally starting to get up to speed in the past year. As creatives we don't want to think about this stuff. One thing I might add, and this mainly applies to people who are writing or producing for an artist on a label: as a writer/producer who doesn't own the masters of the songs, don't expect large sums from streams. Spotify, for example, keeps about 30% of revenue from subscriptions and ads. The rest, 57% goes to the master owners(often the labels), and 13% to the payout of writer, publishers, mechanicals etc. And beyond that, the compensation can vary quite a bit based on region, paid user streams vs ad supported streams. It's so complicated, I don't even think the people at the streaming platforms fully understand it. Anyway, Thanks Decap for another informative video.

What I don't understand is how you get mechanical royalties AND performance royalties from the same song (ex. streaming on spotify)? I assume you don't get paid double the money, so whats the split for how much goes through your distributor and how much goes through your PRO?

How does the producer collect their mechanical publishing royalties iff the artist signs up with cdbaby? If the artist makes sure to put the correct splits, the artist will only recieve their royalty due to them? Or does the artist recieve 100% of the funds that come from for example, cdbaby?

You need to collect the metadata (ISRC code, song title name, artist name, song writer name, your publishing split, and record label if applicable) and register it with the MLC so that they can collect your mechanicals.

I registered my first ever song 🎧 on ascap and I received the blue check mark ✔️!!!! From this point how will ascap know thats my song? In order to collect my royalties on my half ? I feel like I’m missing a piece to the puzzle 🧩 do they track it by the title of the song ? Or should I purchase an ISRC and attach it to my song on ascap ? So they can better track where my song is playing?

If you negotiated splits you can register your song directly with your PRO(ASCAP/BMI) and MLC. Be sure to get all the meta data from the PA so that you can register the song properly and get paid for your split of the song

The big issue with this video it is confusing composition and recording royalties, also the use of word "artist" is apparently assuming the music is being 100% produced by a single person, the "artist"... If the song/music is fully auto-produced, then this video is helpful, but in general it still misses the details and clarification regarding the rights owners of the Master Recording, which is some time fully owned by the performing artist (not the "artist", but actually the person who recorded his/her instrument/voice on the Master), or fully owned by the producer, or fully owned by the label, or a mix of negotiated shares between all the mentioned. I am no lawyer, but I can share what I know through an example.... Approximately 70% of a DSP revenue, such as Spotify, is payed as royalties. Suppose this number is 1M$ (too little😂)in a given month, then almost 200K$ (20%) is paid out as mechanical and performance royalties for the AUTHOR/COMPOSER/PUBLISHER, paid by spotify, to the PROs, CMOs and their asspciated publishers and composers/authors... (note for mechanicals, it is paid to distributors if the music is played in the US, as explained in the video). On the other hand, the remaining 800K$ (80%), are paid to the distributors, regardless if the latter take a fee/cut or not, still these 80% are for MASTER RECORDING, and thus they are owed to whoever owns the MASTER. It could be a performing artist, which can be me recording or signing your music compoistion/lyrics as a cover, or be the original artists who wrote the song/music, but he/she is getting paid here only if 1) he/she actually recorded/performed on the master, and 2) if they have negotiated with the label and/or producer a slice in the ownership of the masters... Sadly most of the time only labels own the masters, performing artists and even producers are left behind through the use of work-for-hire contracts, so labels pay a one-time fee and case closed, Or in best case performing artists and producers take a 20% share in the master, while the label, takes all the rest. So to dear fellow producers and performing artists (speically when you improvise on a track or bring value that could define the track character, you could be a beatmaker, an orchestra conductor..), please take ownership in your masters, or at least just LICENCE for labels to exploit only for a defined term and territory, this way you will always have control on the biggest revenue stream, the Master Recording. So how producers should collect their royalties, well, what I know is: sign good recording/master agreements to take part in the master ownership and/or royalties coming from digital and physical sales, also register in producers-oriented societies for example like Sound Exchange in the US, SCPP or SPPF in France...etc, these societies will help collecting Neighboring rights royalties, which are due on the RECORDING/MASTER, and they are for 1) Public Performance, like plays on TV, Radio, pub, and 2) for Private-copy (which is a tax the societies collect any time somebody buys a device that is able to copy data like ipads, phones, hard disk, usbs)... For Public Performance neigboring rights, the U.S didn't sign the Rome treaty, so basically your master will not generate performance royalty when played on a U.S Radio for example, but it will generate such royalty when played on a french or german radio for example, so to collect it, unfortunatly, the only way is to register yourself in a Producer-oriented society, which will collect for you royalties on performances (and private-copy) in their territory (and maybe sometimes extend to couple of countries if they have treaties)... I hope this helps and please correct me if I mentioned anything that contradicts your experience.
