My savage was my Grandfather's, who lent it to a friend who promptly dissappearered with it for nearly ten years. A few years before I was born, my dad tracked the friend and the rifle down, and took it back. Bagged my first deer with it last year, adding to its history even more. Fine weapon.

You're damn right the .22-250s are hard to find. I searched for one ( that I could afford) for over 20 years. I had only seen one, at a gun show in the early '90s, but it was rough. The ones that rarely popped up on the 'net were bringing collector tariffs, so I pretty much gave up. Then in the summer of 2020, I strolled into my favorite gun shop in N.C. and walked out with a cherry 99C .22-250 for $590. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then...

Ha! That's awesome Mark! Those are the best ones to find. When you're not expecting it and all of the sudden, there it is! It's like walking down the sidewalk and you see a 100 dollar bill in the gutter and as you pick it up, you realize it's 2 100 dollar bills folded together!

Thanks for the comment Mark! You and me both! It's frustrating to see all these other manufacturers still kicking out levers and even Savage developed that new straight pull Impulse rifle. I don't see how the 99 would be any more expensive to manufacture than the Impulse. Maybe one of these days. We'll just keep saying our prayers I guess. Have a good one!

If they did start making them again they'd be cheapened up big time with no sights and synthetic stock and they'd want ten prices for them

I inherited my Savage from my grandad back in the '80's. Until I just now watched you demonstrate how to pull the trigger as the lever is being closed, and the rifle will be de-cocked, I did not know it had this feature. Tried it and sure enough it worked like a charm. Thank you.

Thanks for the comment hawleyr28, I appreciate it! That 303 was pretty sweet for it's day. It's always good to hear about those old rifles getting passed down too. One of these days I would like to find a little better one than I have. Maybe a 22-24 in barrel. Have a good one!

Hi, from British Columbia, Canada. Very nice collection. I have three 99s. A 250-3000, a 284, and a 308. All great guns. I've had the 250 since I was a teenager. I've been using the 284 many years for deer and elk. I'm now 68 years old.

Thanks for the comment Billy! I work with a few guys from BC, also went up to Glacier a few years ago. Beautiful country up there! You can keep the Grizzle Bears though, didn't care for that, made me appreciate our black bears. Haha! 3 great rifles. Honestly, if I could only have 3 short action cartridges, that would be them. You have an awesome collection, I recently picked up my first 1899 recently not knowing much about them when I bought it. it is a 1910 model in 303 Sav. with a half hexagon barrel and its wearing a lyman alaskan scope using the open sight cuts to mount the rather odd rings. I hope to someday fire it and enjoy it before moving on to other things.

I am not a M 99 collector but I do own 3 because I was able to buy them at a low price and since really enjoy them. I have a early 1899 A in 30-30, a 99 H in 302 and a 99 E in 308. Out of the 3 I like the 99 H best, it has the red gum un paneled stock and a receiver sight and I hand load for it with cast bullets.

Hey Beaver, no problem, it was a great idea! The thing is, I have watched the prices go up dramatically on these rifles over the past 5 years. On one hand, I believe they are getting more popular than they used to be but I also think, the recent gun buying frenzy has driven their value up. I would really like to see the second part calm down a bit. Maybe a guy could find some at a reasonable price for a while. One of my favorite places to look are Pawn Shops. Every once in a while one will show up in those places for a reasonable price. Last summer a friend of mine found a 300 in good shape for 350.00! Have a good one!

Great video. I would hate to see what it would cost to manufacture a 99 nowadays. Had a brand new .358, a .300 and a .250. Foolishly sold them and have gone without for over ten years until this weekend when I picked up a takedown in .303. Forgot what great rifles they are. Will try to get my moose and deer this year with this latest acquisition.

Hi from NewZealand, Great video 👍 I have a couple of 99's, 1 is the 75th anniversary model like you shared, the other one is made in 1959 in 308 Winchester that is in pretty rough shape but still shoots well, but I'm not sure what model, possibly a E as it has no chequering. Great guns Arthur was way ahead of his time. Thanks again for the video.

Love the 1899s. If I had my druthers I would have two, because I'm a shooter, not a collector. One would be an older model in 300 S for deer and a second one in 22HP for varmints. Both would have straight stocks, long barrels and cool schnabel front stocks.... if I had my druthers. Good show btw. I liked it.

Great rifles! I'm a Winchester collector myself, so I know the satisfaction of adding a desirable piece to the collection. That said...my hands down, all time favorite *hunting* rifle is a Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage. None better for any game in North America, except perhaps big bears. I have killed lots of deer (whitetail and mule deer), elk, moose and black bear with mine. Load it with a good 180 gr. bullet and go for it.

I brought that rifle with open sights just for fun to see how well it would do. With a 168 gr match king bullet, I was consistently hitting at 500 and a couple hits at 750, never tried 1000. My point is that rifle shot as accurately as I could see at least. HaHa! Have a good one, thanks for watching!

I put a recoil pad on my 1979 build 308W 99c, only because the stock is too short as a scoped shooter. They aren't all that common here in Australia, despite the fact that Arthur Savage spent years in OZ and his wife was Australian. I've shot plenty of goats, pigs and deer with it. I hunt goats and pigs with my 1941 built 250-3000. I also have a couple of pre 1920 22 Hi-powers. I've also corrupted a young friend who has used my 308 99c and now owns a couple of pre 1960 99s in 243W and 308W. I'm after a 284 to re-barrel in 338 Canadian for sambar deer here in OZ.

Thanks for the comment Ian! I have some questions. First, I read one time Mr. Savage was captured by Aboriginies and held for ransom but his family wouldn't pay it. Do you know if there is any validity to that? Also, what the heck is a 338 Canadian? That's a new one on me! Is it a Wildcat? It is awesome though to see atleast a few of you fellas down there getting some use out of the Model 99's! How do they hold up down there? It seems like a pretty tough environment for rifles. Have a good one Ian, thanks for watching!

I have my dads 99 it’s early 303 with a 1/2 octagon barrel, do you have a source on 303 ammo?

Thanks for the comment Vern! Sounds like a pretty neat rifle, you don't see the half octagons very often. Right off hand, my first thought is gunbroker.com. I have found it on there before but of course you PAY for it. There are some small boutique Cartridge manufacturers that still make it. Wisconsin Cartridge is one. I don't know anything about them though, so I'm hesitant to recommend them. Might be a great company, I don't know.

I was just gifted my grandfathers model 99 in .300 savage. I’m curious where the best place to buy ammo would be?

The best time to look for it is before deer season when the Ammo companies ramp up production to fill the need in your state or check online. It does not stick around on the shelves too long after deer season.

So....I'm having an 1899 250-3000 born in 1919 professionally refinished, I know the pros and cons of refinishing. so lets not go there😁. I have a question tho.....The peep/tang sight holes at the rear of the receiver were empty when I got it??? is it safe to assume that it originally came with one? Pondering either plugging the holes but would like a peep IF you guys think it had one to begin with. Thoughts?

I am not as bad as you are, but out of five only the 308 is not a take down, and I have no Imp. I have yet to take anything with the 250.

Thanks for the comment Scotty! I like the way you phrased that, HaHa! I am finding myself being drawn more to the take downs lately, they are definitely intriguing. I will say, that fixed barrel 250 is consistently more accurate than the TD though. Have a good one, Thanks for watching!

The ONE good thing about owning a Savage is that WHEN it breaks at least you'll have a paddle for your canoe 🛶

Thanks for the comment Mr. Johnson! I'm pretty sure you're thinking of the Ruger Mark ii. HaHa! Is it possible what you meant to say was, "not only is Savage the best rifle ever made but if you ever needed it to be used as a paddle, it would also excel at that." Have a good one, Thanks for the comment!
