In this video, i show you how to convert / modify any 4 stroke or 2 stroke nitro / glow rc aeroplane engine for use with ground rc.
Crankshaft sizes differ on four strokes so a different pilot nut may well be required. most pilot shafts for 1/8 scale engines should fit but please check before buying and doing this mod.
The thread on the sc52fs engine is 1/4"-28, Here's a pdf with a list of 4 stroke engines and their crankshaft thread sizes:

You can do this modification to OS, ASP, SC, Magnum & Saito engines.

I've done this years ago with a couple of 2-stroke aero engines of .40-.60 size. I had to radically change the gear ratios to get any top-end speed out of it, and the engines ALWAYS ran hot with them being aero engines with a much smaller heat sink on the head. I had some success with using a tiny P.C. cooling fan blowing over the head, but proper sized 1/8 scale car car engines are always a better choice.

you will ideally need a bump starter, thats the most reliable way to start them, like the race engines etc with no pullstart. If you struggle to find what you need, i can sell you the complete setup in the video with or without the crank as its not being used at the present time.

The proper Os car engines can be made to rev to 20,000 rpm with right carb and exhaust, have to gear them high and have a two speed gearbox to get the best out of them. I have an Os Fs 26 In a 1/5 scale bike, vids on here.

The car engines have different cams and valve springs, and unavailable now, but still command high prices second hand.

I have been keeping my eyes out for a car version 4 stroke, They never come up for sale so fitting an aero 4 stroke is the next best thing. Its for the noise more than anything because even the car 4 strokes are slow unless on a 1/10th. Pretty much why you dont see them made for cars today, too slow and costs are high compared to 2 strokes. shame really.

Hello Mark Fpv, What inertial flywheel, cone and crankshaft extender did you use? I have the same engine. Has the same diameter and step that of Kyosho? Thanks for your video

The pilot nut for the clutch assembly Im pretty sure was for a 1/8 scale kyosho inferno. part number: IF208B. I used a generic 1/8th scale flywheel.

At the moment I have the project stopped, but next month I will look for the pieces. How much would you give me the kit? The crankshaft could cut it without problems. I live in Spain, I do not know how much I would pay for the shipment.

I have an os fs40 that has the same thread. What pilot nut did you get? There is very little in the way of specifications for pilot nuts/shafts of available ones

Im pretty sure it was for a 1/8 scale kyosho inferno. part number: IF208B. Pretty much any 1/8th pilot shaft will fit. its the smaller shafts found on .15 engines out of 1/10th's that wont fit.

Mark FPV I'll try it. Better than anything else other than a mass order of the part and hope since most don't list sizes. Or machine it myself and that'd be a pain

Mark FPV thankfully I found 4 pieces between Amazon and eBay. Quite surprising since it didn't even try to screw around with search padding.

I was just curious why you would want to convert it to a four stroke if they run hotter and have to add a bunch of fans.Do they last longer? Do they have more power?

It was purely a case of could i do the conversion. I had a spare 4t engine along with a spare crankshaft so i could revert back to stock and I like to tinker. It was under powered due to max rpms but a change in spur and clutch gears did improve it. It did get quite hot, even when running with no body shell. It's certainly do able but as you stated, fans needed. Would I run a 4t zfull time in an rc car? Yes and no. A 1/10 touring car with a small os fs would be ok. 1/8 is too heavy i think. There was a 1/10 from factory in the 90's / early 2000's with a smll pullstart 4t engine, I forget the brand. It was around a .25 size.

How you extend the crankshaft?

The crankshaft had to be shortened for the clutch guide nut to snug up to the flywheel.

If its the redcat shockwave where the engine mounts length ways rather than side ways, its doubtful. A 1/8 scale engine is usually a big block engine and almost twice the size of a 1/10 engine. The shockwave does not a lot of room to play with. Anything is possible though. The chassis will need to be re drilled for the larger engine mounts but i dont think you have enough length to play with , the back of the engine will be hitting the rear arm if it does manage to line up with the spur gear.

I had a saito FA 50 in a Traxxas 4tec. Very fun and would rev to about 15,000 rpm before valve keepers would snap and hole the piston. Check out my vid if you like.

So you painted the engine black and fitted a car clutch, you know this engine good for 11,000 rpm?

I know what you are thinking lol I was very aware what the performance would be like. The engine in the ansmann had another crank fitted and popped back into a plane. It went well, not very fast but a lot of torque.

Will also add that when i was looking to do this, there were no videos of how to fit the flywheel etc to a 4 stroke, so i thought i would pop one up. Obviously it needs custom mounting into the chassis as the aero engine ends up being an inch longer.
