Hello again ... you guessed it ... Ancestry DNA matches page changed its format, and I have now been able to adjust the Spreadsheet to use the new format. This time, I've created TWO versions of the worksheet, one that works with the SHIFT + CTRL + V when you paste just the values, and the other worksheet that works with the regular CTRL + V which will paste the full comments, including the Live Links back to each DNA Match - and - this worksheet preserves those live links too! SO, you can use whichever version you prefer. A couple notes: * Both worksheets come with 4000 rows with the formulas filled in. There are more formulas in these new versions, so, the sheet takes a bit longer to process the data and go through each of the formulas after you do the copy & paste. Be patient. Of course this effect is magnified on older machines. * If you go BEYOND 4000 rows (yikes), you will have to manually copy the formulas from row 4000 (or so) downwards to the end of the sheet so that it continues to work properly. * The formulas are setup assuming that the DNA Match page is in its "natural state", sorted by RELATIONSHIP. If you sort it by DATE, the Category formula doesn't work right, and you won't get the results you want for names etc.. * I was able to properly separate Category / Name / Managed by - I think - finally, and, MOST of the Notes section will behave themselves now! * I've left a row for Groups - but - I can't grab that info for you (since it's not in text) , but if you want a place to manually add it yourself - it's there for you. Until the next time Ancestry decides to help us out with a new feature and format ... Enjoy! - Greg :-)

HI Greg. What if you want to select all of the matches? Do you have a faster way of getting the matches to load on the Ancestry page?
@uptergroveGreg
@uptergroveGreg 2 жыл бұрын
@@aprilgoldenberg429 - great question. The only way I've found is to just keep scrolling down to the bottom of your Ancestry DNA Matches page so that it is forced to load more and more matches. The way the page is (currently) programmed, it loads SOME but not all of your matches at a time, that way the page loads pretty quickly initially, and you're not left twiddling your thumbs waiting for a long list to appear. The down side, of course, is that you have to do this, scrolling down, to load more. I don't know of a way to force it to load ALL of your matches at once - and - I would also suggest that at some point, you'll probably want to cut-off the matches you're tracking because the # of cM that you share is so small, it's almost impossible to find the connection, it's so far back. I know completists will argue - and that's fine - go crazy! I just know that my match page is like a bottomless well - it never ends.
@aprilgoldenberg429
@aprilgoldenberg429 2 жыл бұрын
@@uptergroveGreg I used to agree about the small cM matches until I saw known relatives appearing in some of those. Of course those help me make the connection with some of the higher matches that I can’t figure out how they are related to me. I guess I’ll be at it for a few days. Thanks for the quick response!
@uptergroveGreg
@uptergroveGreg 2 жыл бұрын
@@aprilgoldenberg429 I've heard similar things from others - so go for it. In my own list, I have many maternal French Canadian matches, and anything less than 15 cM is inevitably so far back , and related in so many different ways, that it's impossible for me to detangle. If I find a paternal match in that range I rejoice... but then I've been fooled because I see an Irish lastname -yay - only to discover, the match's mother or grandmother was French-Canadian! Ahh .... fooled again!

Great update to the Spreadsheet. I love putting all my info into Spreadsheets but am new to Google Sheets, and don't know many functions other than basic Excel ones. Both of Greg's versions are working fine for me, but quick question: Can you sort the Column "People in Tree" numerically? I can't, because it has mixed numbers and words, but there might be a trick out there. Other observations: On the original version, I could only display approx. 550 shared matches. I thought therefore to break up my searches, by Surname of Interest, or Place of Interest, using the Duplicate function on the lower Tabs. It limits me to 5,000,000 cells (I think), so i can only create 3 tabs. I have therefore created MANY new Files, with 3 tabs each, to sort my data... Loving the work you're doing in this Group!

First off Greg Clarke, THANK YOU!!!! Now that I have the spreadsheet I'm excited, but that excitement dissipated when I was scrolling down and copying all of my matches. As I got closer to the 25 cM pages it began to go slower and slower I was in about 2 hours at this point. Next thing, 30 minutes later my page started crashing and then crashed! I lost all of my copy/highlights. Is there a way to copy a few hundred at a time paste it on the spreadsheet and go back for more and keep adding a few at a time or must they be all copied at the same time? Second question, what are y'all doing with the info once you have it in the spreadsheet? How are you grouping them to know you are related and how? In ancestry, then going back and finding those matches? I'm not sure how to separate, group, or color-code them on the sheet. I don't even know which are my mom's side and my father's side without constantly going back to my ancestry. That would be very time-consuming. Please let me know if you have a video on this. Thank you again this is awesome!

So excited that this is coming. Worked on this with my hubby for 3 hours now and can't seem to get it to work. Found this comments list and it seems I am having the same hiccup with a different view. I'm in Canada. Tried Chrome, Edge and Excel and all browsers sort the Ancestry data so the grouping dots are at the end of the rows of matches. Also using Windows 10 if that matters. Will be waiting with excitement to see the 'tweaked' spreadsheet. :-) Thank you very much for your hard work!

Hi @@shannaandrews9807 - I've just updated the spreadsheet - my version (in Canada) changed its format this week - if yours did too, see if the latest Worksheet (NEW View Button) does what you want. The other issue I've heard is that not all browsers do the copy and paste the same way. I use Google Chrome on a Mac, and it works better than FireFox. Safari and Opera seem to play nice as well. I don't have a Windows to compare that too, but hopefully something will work out for you.

UPDATE: I have tested a new version of the Google Spreadsheet which I believe will now work with either version of the Ancestry DNA Match list (the format I see here in my corner of the internet in Canada, and the version some of the rest of you are seeing in other parts of the world). Thanks to those who helped test out the new formulas. The new version has TWO worksheets - one if you have a VIEW MATCH button at the end of each row, and one worksheet if you do NOT have that button. I will make a post here as soon as I've updated the Google Spreadsheet. (IT IS NOT UPDATED YET - please be patient - I need to coordinate with Devon.) Thank you for your patience ... the fix is coming ... I'm keen to share it with you all ... thanks for the very positive responses so far from those that have used it successfully, and those testers who have tried the new version.

The macro to clear data from the worksheet is under "Extensions" in my Google Docs online app, not Under Tools. While I can cut and paste the results, whether as is or just values, the formulas are not populating columns G through P I think because as other person mentioned my list of matches is not laid out in the same way yours is. I can share a snapshot if you would like; basically, I have 3 lines of information for each match, where your view only shows 2 lines.

Hi. I'm a new member today and have enjoyed watching a few of your really educational videos. Thanks. Regarding Greg's excellent spreadsheet for Ancestry DNA matches, Devon mentioned at the end of the video something about updating the spreadsheet with new matches from Ancestry but I couldn't understand how (a) to harvest the new matches since the last time you looked at Ancestry; and (b) how to add in the new matches to the spreadsheet without affecting the data already in there. Is there a set of instructions somewhere for this? Thanks.
@uptergroveGreg

The spreadsheet just does a "dumb" copy and paste and interprets the result into a table. It doesn't have the "smarts" built into it to know what is new and what is old. BUT ... if you use a filter to only display the new matches on your Ancestry DNA Matches page, then you could copy & paste those into the spreadsheet, and then add the resulting table of NEW rows to the bottom of your Master Spreadsheet, which I'm assume you're keeping in a safe place somewhere else.

First, the spreadsheet only works in Google Sheets. Second, you have to use the correct tab for the layout that you see on Ancestry. Ancestry is not showing the same DNA match list view to everyone. There is an update in the instructions on the first tab of the Spreadsheet to help you know which tab to look at. If you have any further questions, send Greg and email (also on the first tab of the spreadsheet) and he'll help you out. Perhaps there is a glitch in the coding or perhaps he needs to improve the instructions. Good luck and let me know if that solves the problem.

After you confirm your email, then you'll receive a link to Google Sheets. Save the Google Sheets file to your Google Drive account by following the instructions in the email or on the spreadsheet. Once you do all of those steps, you can then follow the instructions in the spreadsheet on where to get the information to copy, where to paste the information in the primary sheet for the formulas to work, and then you can look at the spreadsheet that has the list you're seeking.

Hello, there! I have received the shared Google Sheet, but it seems as though it has been modified by someone who has not copied the sheet, therefore has directly modified it. Might it be possible for you to share a clean Google Sheet file? A suggestion would be if you replace the word EDIT with the word COPY in the link you share: it forces the receiver to make a copy of the file; in that way, there is no inadvertent modification. I have been unable to get the list populated. I'm not sure if it is directly related to the inadvertent edit by others or because my Ancestry visual is not the same as it is in the video. I look forward to being able to use the Google Sheet! Thank you for creating this!

Hi Connie. The spreadsheet comes with some sample data so that you have a sense of what to expect when you copy your own on top of it. I didn't add many rows, thinking that for most people, it would automatically overwrite my sample. You can always clear the data away from column A and start fresh. For some, though, a totally blank slate is a little unnerving, hence my choice to leave something there as a sample. Excellent point though - about the difference between /edit and /copy for the Google Link !

I'm 73-years young and new to creating spreadsheets so all gentle suggestions are welcome. Thx.

Hi again! Just did another update to the latest worksheet : NEW View Match btn - to fix a problem with the Notes column. It may not be perfect still, but it seems to catch more of the Notes and place them correctly (instead of placing them in the first column of the next line).

Hi Greg, thanks for the update, was almost there with it myself, frustrating that it was broken! Couple of issues I'm having, as I have my parents DNA I have Mother's side & Father's side added in to the mix which throws out some of the data. Also, I have some "tree unavailable" as well, so that breaks the tree column I can share my sheet with you if you are interested to work it out, I'm banging my head against the wall!

Same for me. I put my cursor in the "yellow box" and press SHIFT+CONTROL+V a little box with word "paste" appears on my screen and then I click it. Copied Text Only goes into far left column. Nothing to the right. Also, I did try to download your google spreadsheet in Excel. Now on Mac I go to downloads and then open it with Excel. The only problem is the "formula's do not transfer over. Here is what I get =IF(ISERR(FIND("shared DNA",A3:A50500)),"",ROW(A3:A50500)). I also open the Excel File and the top 3 rows left of 1st column do not line up correctly. The information actually appears below the line below the "Yellow Line" (oops not below the yellow line - to right but down a few rows. Greg, I'm sure that you may have to do a few "fine tuning" to the instructions. Clearly I/we must NOT be doing something correctly based on your verbal instructions. Await to hear back.

As far as I have been able to figure, the cause of that could be because the formulas used are expecting the copy & pasted info to be a bit different than how Ancestry is displaying it for those of us in the States compared to how it does in Canada...or maybe the differences are because of which browser used to access ancestry...just something is definitely different. If you look at the initial info on the worksheet before we clear the creator's info out, you'll see his info includes a shared % and some fields include this symbol | ...I have no experience with how to adjust the formulas to match what we are getting from Ancestry, but I have at least figured out that is where the hiccup comes into it.

This is cool, but when pasting matches with Ctrl+V and Shift+Ctrl+V,: I noticed: -the former had embedded links (names, trees, etc), the latter did not. Why is that? -neither has Groups (Col P). Why not? -the former does not have Notes, at least not in Col Q ... I noticed some notes in Col G There are other issues, but probably too much to note in this comment.
@uptergroveGreg
@uptergroveGreg 3 жыл бұрын
The embedded links vs no links is the key difference between a straight PASTE (with links) to PASTE VALUES ONLY (just the raw text, nothing fancy, no highlighting, bold, or fancy links). The formulas generally work better with raw text to parse - that's why I recommend that "flavour" of pasting for best results. (However, there is something cool about having a table that has active live links to your DNA matches .... that's cool too ... ) Maybe you do two versions and merge them .... (I'll leave that as an exercise to the intrepid spreadsheet fans out there to play with ....)

If it didn't work, there is an email to reach out to the spreadsheet developer to troubleshoot why it's not working. Ancestry changes their layout frequently and sometimes it's not working because Greg needs to make a change. Why do you download the match list - you don't need to. HOWEVER, since Ancestry doesn't offer some tools for understanding matches, many folks want to download their match list on Ancestry to keep better notes, filter the results, and compare what they see on Ancestry to Myheritage, 23andMe, Family Tree DNA, GEDmatch, and so forth. This tool and tutorial came out of a Channel Membership training session when attendees wanted a way to download their match list but Ancestry doesn't allow that. Greg graciously programmed a tool that could achieve that goal and then shared it with us for our members and the general public. Yes, many genealogists on KZfaq share lots of tips and tricks. There are some I dislike and some I find amazing. It's up to each genealogist to take the suggestions and do with them what they will. Good luck
