Hot water works great, especially at home. What works great too is Windex. I've used Windex a lot before in the past. So what I do now is carry a pack of Windex wipes in my range bag or you can pre soak a cloth or paper towel, but the wipes are strong and don't tear so easily. Works great for field cleaning, especially if its gonna sit for a while until it's thoroughly cleaned.

As someone who shoots black powder guns for a hobby, this is just the same way i clean my Holy Black guns haha. Although i use something called Ballistol (smells awful) and Windex for my guns, and boiling water too. Thank you for the video! I just bought a Turked Gewehr 88 and was planning to shoot corrosive surplus, but wasn't sure if the cleaning routine was like the one used for Black Powder or not. I learn something new everyday.

@8mmmauserman Thank you, so far I've discovered that the only surplus ammo that would be "safe" in it is Romanian 154 grain rounds, as it's a lower pressure round. Also PPU 8mm which is loaded anemic to 30-30 pressures. I don't reload yet so I can't do that at the moment, so those choices of ammo will do.

If I shoot Milsurp ammo out of my M44 Mosin Carbine, (I managed to score a sealed spam can of 7.62×54 for $80 last year), I use the same foaming bore cleaner as I do in my muzzleloaders because it is meant to neutralize the corrosive components in Black Powder. I see videos like this everywhere. And I have the same issue as you have, gotta be careful of water getting under the stock. And drying out the inside of the gun to not attract rust. I take krud cutter, it's a general de-greaser for tough spots. I get it in Walmart and in a few general and hardware stores. I use my bronze brushes and patches. I spray the bronze brush 1st and try to loosen up the corrosive residue. Then I run patches both dry and sprayed with krud cutter to clean the inside of the barrel. My dad suggested regular penatrator oil lol (his solution to almost everything is oil it😄) it worked, tried it one time. Was really slippery tho hahaha.

Good day ! Came across this channel this morning. Since you're talking about 8mm Mauser, have a question. So, if I have old surplus ammo, other than shooting it, what is the fastest way to dismantle ammo? If I wanted to re use the ball type projectile, and use a new primer and powder is this feasible? Thanks, Scott
@8mmmauserman
@8mmmauserman 14 күн бұрын
Sure. You can buy an inertial bullet puller and reload. There are hammer styles, and I recently bought one called the Pile Driver. Something to keep in mind is that most surplus ammo is berdan primed, and reloading with Berdan primers is really complicated in the US. You'll need to replace or convert the cases.
@scottyockman7716
@scottyockman7716 14 күн бұрын
@8mmmauserman yes I understand that most if not all surplus 8mm will be Berdan primed. I have been watching several videos on de-capping cases with Berdan primers. One guy machines the case in a drill press, another guy did it with a Berdan de-capping tool, another guy did it by hydraulic decapping. So, which is the best option? I guess choose one.

I don't believe that Mauser and Mosin bolts are chromed. I am seeing conflicting things on if its a Nickle coating, different alloy, etc. But certainty not chrome as the surface isn't harder (I can scratch it as easy as I could steel). My guess is a different alloy as when these guns went through refurb were everything was reblued typically the bolts come out a different hue.

You speak from 40 years worth of crap. Go to any gun store and find bore cleaners designed for corrosive black powder rifles, then read the ingredients....guess what Goober, the main ingredient in many is AMMONIA! Putting ammonia in a rifle bore will hurt NOTHING......... put in the bore to dissolve corrosive and it does so better than ballistol. Ballistol is $2 an ounce. Ammonia is 2 cents an ounce. Mix one pounce of ammonia with a spoonful of liquid soap which is a grease cutter and pint of hot water, pour it down the bore, wash it out with clean hot water...you are DONE. Takes 5 minutes, costs a few cents. No way having ammonia in a bore for a few seconds, or even a few minutes can hurt anything, especially if mixed with water. Stop spreading BS.

@@chadhaire1711 I should have qualified my statement...ammonia WILL cause the bore to rust if not removed promptly after cleaning...chromoly steel specifically, but also stainless to a lesser degree...this is a documented FACT! Since black powder shooters have been using ammonia based cleaners since your 40 years experience, and no body has been dumb enough to leave it in long enough to ruin a barrel, we can see from your comments who the birdbrain is Gomer. Stick to your ballistol at at $2 an ounce, while ammonia is 2 cents an ounce, and mixed with soap and a pint of hot water does a better job in 5 minutes. THAT is another fact I have straight........

This is a lousy way to get rid of corrosive ammo....bad bad and too much work. All you need to do is get a pint of hot water, some dish soap (will breaks up grease and fouling) and an ounce of ammonia (it dissolves the corrosive--dont use windex). Now just pour this in the chamber/barrel with a funnel and you are done....takes 5 minutes. Then flush it out with water and mild cleaning as normal. NO NEED to take bolt apart, no need to clean firing pin......this video is the hard way and NOT effective.
