How to cut threads 6mm arc 5/8-24 barrel (muzzle) threading

I'm cutting a 5/8-24 tip thread on a Hart #5 416 stainless steel barrel. The movement in my lathe is something I have to live with. don't have concrete floors. I doubled the thickness of my floors for the machinery weight but when the 4 jaw is being used a slight out of balance can show up and rocks the lathe little bit. it appears worse then it actually is. doesn't effect accuracy.

Hello Jeff, I admire you in a big way I’m a retired mechanic never did any kind of machinist work but maybe have ground some valve seats and that you have your wits with you to be able to do that type of work is great! If you are still feeling up to it would you like to cut some threads on a Savage Axis 6.5 muzzle? of course I would send it to you if you felt up to it, One way or another I will Pray for you and thank you for your inspirational Videos.

Please accept my apologies for the out of focus threading. As well the lathe moving around from the 4 jaw chuck. It's not near as bad as it appears in the video. I don't have a concrete floor and this allows the lathe move just a wee bit at times. I doubled the thickness of the floor for the weight but it doesn't help in the slight movement of the lathe. My accuracy is not affected by this. My 4 jaw gives me a slight out of balance at times.

Hey Jeff do you use anything to support the end of the Barrell inside the spindle bore such as a bushing? Also do you have any thoughts about using a collect vs 4 jaw chuck. Thanks. I use a precision bored piece of delrin ( acetal ) to hold breach end of the barrel in my spindle spider. It runs concentric to the spindle bore. Easy quick and efficient.

I'm doing way better then the doctors predicted. I will keep going and hopefully I'll get my lung transplant. I'm still not on O2 full time. Life is good..

Yes, get the dro. A must have. WW1 was when the true manual machinist and toolmakers were born. No dros just great brains. 😆

Great Work as always. I got some Questions,i own a Production Lathe without a lead screw.I am used to do threats with a Set of Tap and die Tools,but i am Not Happy with the quality. Is there a way to get good threading Jobs with that? Other Question,can you describe your way to operate the lead screw ,Thread watch and Tools you use in more Basic way,maybee for people which are new to this. Yes, first is the importance of correct bore diameter for taps as well in harder materials increase the diameter a few thousandths so the tap won't bind up. Same goes for dies. I'm going to do a video on using a pilot for die threading here very soon. This will provide additional information. I'll make it a point to discuss taps and dies.
