How To Deal With Territorial And Aggressive Behaviour In Quaker Parrots

I consistently comment about the difficulty of owning quaker parrots and these behaviours especially get bad during puberty and nesting seasons. Sometimes unbearable. You have to know how to deal with it properly because quakers are really smart and know exactly what they are doing. Aggressive and territorial behaviour are common traits with quakers but they are fixable to an extent. You can diminish how bad it gets and some are naturally worse than others. But any quaker owner knows they are not shy from taking quite a few bites from their quaker and having to tough it out!

So helpful, I have an 11 week old quaker he/she is feisssssty! A beautiful bird seems to have moments where she's genuinely bonding with me. We have 4 kids and our home can be a bit loud sometimes rowdy with our 2 year old. Their cage is off to the side not in the middle of things. Love your videos and content. It's nice that you're honest. Only wish I'd found you sooner lol 😆 I might have chosen a different parrot. However, Nova has already stolen my heart even with her sassy edge so it's me and my quaker till the end!

Im glad I can help ☺️ Big warning when they turn 1y and they enter puberty, especially because you have young kids, they can get (some not all) more bitey and attack for no reason

It takes a lot of time to gain their trust and for them to become comfortable with their surroundings. I suggest taking a look at this video and following the timestamp; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bK2Cktt306qVlKM.html

I think you have already said it but why do you have the nesting box? Is It for your birds to sleep? And I believe the video you saw was from Victoria Ryann, I used to watch her channel but she stopped recording, don't know why :/
@mimisbirdhouse
@mimisbirdhouse 3 жыл бұрын
So I dont ever recommend having a nesting type box, i have mine because quakers are natural nesting birds, my conure sleeps on her belly and they are a couple who do couple things. There has never been hormonal or aggressive behaviour over it or egg laying but I would take it away immediately if there was

I just rescued a quaker and she flies to attack me almost every time I walk past her. What is the correct way to "punish or reprimand her" to work on fixing this behavior. She was left in a cage for over a year with only getting food and water, no interaction whatsoever. I don't have a clue even how old she is, the guy I took her from speculated she was somewhere between 10 and 15 years old. It's been a painful 3 weeks for me lol but she's worth it. She's a gorgeous bird, just needs time and attention to make her the loveable girl I know she can be! Thank you so much for your time and attention...you are amazing and I love how I can see your love for your feather fam in your eyes and how your whole face smiles when you talk about them. Have a great afternoon and God Bless!

Rescues can take a really really long time to gain their trust. But you’d have to follow the same steps as you would with any bird! The best way is the example I give in this video if you follow the timestamp for taming your bird; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bK2Cktt306qVlKM.html Be patient and always remember from their point of view its scary! Thank you either way for taking them in and feel free to dm me if you need any more help ill happily help you through it

Another problem I have...her cage! I'm trying to get her a bigger one as I feel the one I that came with her is not adequate (its 18" by 18" 51" tall). She has her flight feathers obviously because of her being ignored and she's still wild and not able to be held. I clean her tray at the bottom, change her food and water daily. I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how to clean the cage itself. I wipe it down with super hot water, no soap because I don't want to hurt her. But the floor is going to need cleaned eventually. She doesn't go down there that I've seen as of yet, but I still want her to be comfortable and clean as possible but not sure how to do this without finding a pet cage, forcibly grabbing her, putting her in the pet cage, thoroughly cleaning her cage, and then forcibly putting her back in her cage. I feel this is going to make her even more pissed off at me than she already is and trying to avoid that if at all possible! @@mimisbirdhouse

@@lps_amazingme1301 warm water with vinegar is safer for birds. If you spray some on a sponge or paper towel you can try and get some of the parts off. Be very gentle and slow, you can leave certain areas soaking. If your bird is getting too stressed than its best to stop, just do what you can. How are you on working on taming her?

So sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, life has been a hectic mess the past few days. Mostly, for right now, I just have been spending time talking to her, touching her toys until she starts to get loud then I back off. I found something she absolutely LOVES! It's guava nectar by Iberia. The first thing I do when I take her cover off is get all of her dishes, scrub them and give her her "morning joe" aka guava nectar and her plates of veggie chop and fruit chop. Then I clean out her water bowl and empty and refill her seed and pellet bowl. I am noticing an improvement, which is good, I'm think I'm going to have to have her flight wings clipped at least once if I'm going to have any chance of holding her. Everything I try, she just bites me and flies around the room and lands back on her cage. I hate doing it, but right now, she's actually getting down on the floor with my 2 little dogs and they don't bother her. I'm not sure what else to do...maybe this is too big of a job for someone with my inexperience to take on, but I already love her so much. PLUS her flight feathers are the most amazing dark blue VIBRANT color, it breaks my heart to have them clipped even knowing they'll grow back soon lol. Sorry so long, you are awesome...thanks for taking the time, have a fantastic evening with your feathered friends and God Bless...@@mimisbirdhouse

@@lps_amazingme1301 sounds great improvement! But please please dont clip! You are basically forcing them to trust you. Gaining their trust can take awhile! And its different for each bird please dont lose patience 🙏🏼 My sun conure took 3y to gain FULL trust My cockatiel took 1y My two quakers were immediate. Its so different for everyone. You dont want trust built on disabling them. Whether they are clipped or not you still have to slowly allow them to trust you. As well because you have dogs its important for them to have their full flight incase of danger

@@neeli8423 As long as they are introduced properly then it shouldnt be an issue. Conures usually do well with quakers. Just keep in mind your quaker can feel jealous of threatened of a new bird, even territorial so make sure the introduction is slow and careful!
