How to decide if I should take a demotion at work. Watch if you're struggling to make the tough decision of whether or not to accept a demotion. Taking a step back in your career might not have been part of your overall career plan but it doesn't have to be a bad thing.
In the career world, most people are proud to share with friends and family, and sometimes even acquaintances, when they get a new job title or promotion.
The word demotion, on the other hand, is usually a word that most of us try not to use because it suggests that something bad happened at work. Either we got in trouble, or failed in some other way. Despite its negative connotations, there are situations in which a demotion could be the right choice for you.

My situation is a bit different but this really helped. I chose a demotion as I was miserable in my management role. I’m struggling with self worth as I felt I’d let myself down but this has helped me to realise this is about me and not how others perceive me. Thanks. I needed this

So happy I came across this video! I’m deciding to take a demotion for the sake of my mental health and my family. I love my current role however the environment I’m in is toxic and it’s causing me anxiety and burnout ! I just applied for a position that will be considered demotion but it’s a role I’ll truly enjoyed. Thank you for taking time to create this videos 😊

I been wanting to ask for a demotion for sometime and after I got pulled in for my “job performance “ I asked for it. I told them I been wanting it for sometime. Not sure if they believed me or not, at this point I don’t care. I have not been happy for over a year, been miserable and stressed. They haven’t giving me an answer yet ( been only a few days and they are looking to see if they “allow” it . Honestly just the hope and the thought of doing it makes me happy, if they say no,, I am not sure where to go from there.

I’m currently a senior teacher but receiving no extra money for the increase of job load. I’ve decided to give that part up and return to my normal class role. All I have to do now is convince my Ego it’s the right thing to do. Great video Thankyou.

Demotion is better than termination. I mean I would rather get demoted than fired.

Thanks for sharing your perspective Michael. Some people would definitely rather face demotion rather than termination. On the other hand, some folks would prefer to be terminated I'm sure. A termination can sometimes mean big payments in the form of severance. It really depends on the circumstances.

I went from manager to supervisor and the company got bought off for the 2nd time...and they want me to be demoted again to customers service.... I'll see if I can negotiate or move on. Changing my role 3 times and having customers service on my resume will jeopardize future roles.

I was basically pushed into taking a promotion. I already turned it down previously due to concerns the role would just stress me out. The added responsibility came with an extra £100 a month. Despite my reluctance I voiced some time after turning the role down that in future perhaps I would be in a better place. Well my employer took that as a definate yes and threw he straight into the training. I was miserably anxious through the whole thing. Despite them saying it is ultimately my choice the culture there is very pushy to take on more. I had some adjustments and took the job but for the past 8 months I have hated being at work. I can indeed do a lot of the work at a high quality but I am just always on edge and irritable. Today I took the option for a demotion. I dont know what the full consequences of this will be yet apart from lower pay; I just felt 8 months with no improvement and hating my work life was an indication things are not working. We will just have to see how it will effect my environment at work now. As far as I am aware I'm the only employee who has willingly stepped down from a higher position.

I’m on stress leave that will be ending soon. During this time it has been revealed that I am suffering from cognitive issues. After cognition testing and multiple MRI’s, it will be further evaluated as to the source. I can’t cognitively do my job (was working 75 hours a week, suffered hypertension, etc in an effort to overcome what now, finally has an explanation). ADA won’t work, but I don’t know about asking for a voluntary demotion (not sure a role exists for that). Frankly, my cognition issues have me very fearful of what I’m capable in any job. I have a family to support.

So sorry to hear you are going through this. Perhaps it's time for a career change. Asking to take a step back is always an option also, provided you have a supportive employer. Good luck with this.

Thank you! I really needed this. My situation is similar - my current role is being dissolved hence I am being offered a demotion. Honestly the job scope isn't that different, and I will be carrying on some of the jobscope from the current position. Compensation wise, it's the same as well. I guess I'm just feeling down because it certainly is a blow to the ego and I've been worried about what people will say/think versus how this could be a good thing for me and my career.

Thanks for the comment and I'm sorry to hear you're going through this. I can understand, it can be challenging to manage those perceptions. At the end of the day though, it really is about you and your happiness in the new job!! It's not about those external perspectives. Wishing you all the best in your transition :)

I am feeling so depressed I have been at my company for 12 years I started with a department worked there for over 3 left because it was a toxic environment got promoted and in my current job over 8 years recently I was told they are downsizing my department and want to send me back to my old department with same pay, I feel so trapped to go back to something I absolutely hated and have been away from for so long any advice? I started looking outside of the company for a new job, but haven’t found anything yet and can’t get severance or unemployment if I turn down my old job.

@ms T I am sorry to hear you're going through this. What you do really depends on a number of factors, including your financial situation. If you are miserable ideally you would quit, but that just isn't reasonable a lot of the time. You might need to go back to the job to maintain your income and keep looking aggressively to move to a new position/company. You might find this video helpful, where I provide some tips on how to cope in a tough situation like this>> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aZqfatZ1mNHUlHU.html. Good luck and I hope all works out for you.

Hi! I love your informative videos. Thank you very much! I work in Information Technology. My salary hasn't decreased. I just received a 4% raise. Altogether, I feel very much mistreated and discriminated against at my job. Being with my company for 5 years, we switched our contract a year ago. The company seem to now hire mostly inexperienced males, paying them low wages or whatever they feel fit. Several of the new employees or good friends are related by blood to management. I'm near 50 years old and have worked extremely hard to move the company forward. I'm beyond numb because they just sent a mass email of the company's new transition. In the email, they announced all the newly hired employees, promotions, and department changes. In the email, I noticed they mentioned my name in a sentence congratulating a new employee/my new teammate. The department and title they mentioned her in with my name included is waaay beneath my job title. I came in as a software developer, and they put me under the title of client support. I was in shock and very much hurt. I immediately went to my supervisor's office in a professional manner to get answers, and he turned me away by stating, "it's just a title." I emailed the project manager and director, and they both totally ignored my emails. I also called HR. HR explained my job title coming in and still listed as 'software developer'. All the new employees are addressing me by the new title of customer support, as being labeled in the email. Every day, I walk in that place humiliated. Most of the employees there know I work extremely hard... It's very embarrassing and humiliating. Now, I'm noticing my supervisor is quietly moving my duties around. I'm pretty sure they are trying to save money, but I can't believe they would go this far to achieve whatever they are trying to achieve. They are totally ignoring me. I feel they are trying to make me resign or demote me...If so, I I feel they are going about it the wrong way. I'm job searching now because I feel like I've been used, lowballed, disrespected and mistreated. Do you have any constructive advice for me. I'm totally losing sleep over this.

I'm really sorry to hear about the difficult situation you're facing at your job. It's clear that you've put in a lot of hard work and dedication over the years, and it's disheartening to experience these challenges. Here are some pieces of advice that might help you navigate this situation: Keep a detailed record of all incidents, emails, conversations, or changes that have occurred, especially those related to your job title, duties, and any discriminatory practices. This documentation could be vital if you need to take further action. Since HR confirmed your job title as a software developer, it's important to get HR involved in resolving the matter. Share your concerns about the changes and your supervisor's actions, and make sure they are aware of the impact on your work and well-being. Politely request a meeting with your supervisor to discuss your concerns, focusing on your responsibilities and the discrepancies between your actual role and the new title. Address how these changes have affected your job satisfaction and performance. Since you're already looking for new opportunities, continue your job search actively. Having alternative options can provide you with more security and peace of mind during this challenging time. Even though you're going through a tough situation, it's essential to maintain professionalism at work. This will help protect your reputation and show your dedication and commitment to your job. Don't hesitate to talk to friends, family, or a counselor about your experiences. Sharing your feelings and concerns with a trusted network can be emotionally beneficial. Your value and skills as an experienced IT professional are highly regarded in the industry. Don't let this situation undermine your confidence. You have the right to be treated fairly and with respect in your workplace. It's essential to take steps to address the situation and seek the best resolution for your well-being and career. Good luck with your job search, and I hope you find a more supportive and respectful work environment soon. Thanks for supporting the channel :)
