How To Diagnose a Noisy Chattering VW Over Running Alternator Pulley

Do you hear a flapping chattering noise coming from the VW serpentine belt (aka VW accessory belt) area? Blauparts' video illustrates some of the flap and chatter noises associated with a bad VW over-running alternator pulley. The most common culprit for this noise is a failing VW over-running alternator pulley. Also known as a, VW ADP pulley, VW decoupler pulley, VW alternator freewheel clutch pulley, depending on the manufacturer.
A failing VW over-running alternator pulley can be easily misdiagnosed. After hearing belt noises coming from their VW accessory belt area and upon visual inspection, many notice excessive VW belt flapping and excessive tensioner vibration. We've seen many who have their accessory belt and tensioner replaced -- thinking the VW belt has a broken cord or that the VW tensioner spring was weak. But actually, the VW over-running alternator was beginning to fail and was the cause of their VW's accessory belt system problem.

This video was exactly my problem! I ended changing my old alternator out with a re-manufactured alternator because my alternator was 14 years old. The new alternator cost me $135 for a 140 amp and it came with the over-running pulley already installed. Thank you!

My car doesnt have one, but that is for sure what im hearing. Even after tightening a brand new belt, its still there. There is some build up on the pulley it connects to though so im hoping thats what it is? Im at a loss. All 4 of my belts are right next to each other so its hard to pinpoint which is making the noise. Im going to clean it to find out, but at least now i know how to describe the sound when im looking for more info. Everyone else only mentions squeaking/squealing which is definitely not the case. Appreciate that.

Very tricky problem to diagnose. Everything is running fine but only the tensioner vibrates. Only after you replaced all the pulley then you will come to this video and realize it was the overrunning alternator has seized. Heck, I don't even know the alternator pulley is an overrunning type until it went bad.

Not tricky at all. Just remove the belt and spin the alternator pulley with your fingers then halt the pulley and see if spins freely or if it is jammed. Takes 10 mins.

Noticed mine was locked up this morning after swapping a snapped belt. Haven't got the pulley or tool yet so I'm running as it is for now. My car has no noticeable noise or belt flapping but I'll change the pulley otherwise I'll probably need a new belt again soon

Sir i have a 2008 vw jetta 2.5 my wp alternator belt has busted on me 3 tkmeinthe last 3 days i have already change idle pulley and check the rest and everything looks good any ideas what it could be?? Thinking tensioner could be bad but there is not noise or rattling and all other pulleys look good!! Im at a loss... Any help would be greatly appreciated

Grab a metal rod, and place it against the engine with the other end on your/blocking your ear, move it around until you find where the noise your hearing is loudest.

I have this noise on my 3 cylinder diesel engine noise appears around 1000rpm , bought a tensioner pulley and belt , the mobile mechanics said the pulley wheel was not needed as there is no bearing in it as it didn’t turn , so he fitted belt and tensioner and noise is still there ? ?

Hi, I just replaced the belt and tensioner, however I can see a slight vibration in the tensioner at some specific RPM (around 1100) is that normal?

Some movement is normal. Fluttering and belt deflection is not

The rotational speed of the engine isn't constant, its always changing as the pistons fire. It speeds up at the start of each ignition stroke and loses some speed towards the end. Normally, the alternator is allowed to freewheel faster when the speed reduces. However, when the speed of the engine reduces with a seized pulley the inertia of the alternator will try and pull the belt. The tensioner ends up absorbing this causing the rapid changes in belt tension.

I have a 2008 EOS, with that exact chatter sound, I replaced the pulley and it instantly made the same chattering sound. Any other idea what it might be

is this still happening? I've had some random occurrences on the freeway..have heard it can be due to the throttle body. I also suffer from lurches/hard shifts with my automatic trans since I got my APR tune.VW claims its nothing but we all know what that really means.

Awesome! 2012 jetta pulley starting to have problems at 320000. Anyone know if it's still safe to drive with a little longer? Until spring at least. Update: Yeah I drove another year with it. Changed it this past November. I'd still switch it out whenever you can.

Hey im driving a VW polo 1.4 2012 model well i had whistling noise from the right side especially when i accelerate so the belt and water pump where changed but still no changes i still hear that whistling sound. ist the alternator pulley or what please help

Hello Christian, The best way to confirm if it is your alternator pulley is to remove the serpentine belt. This will stop the alternator from rotating. Run the engine for a short period of time and see if the sound is gone or still noticed. If the sound is gone, it is related to something on the serpentine belt system. If the sound is still noticed with the serpentine belt removed, it is a mechanical problem with the engine such as a cam chain, cam chain tensioner, lifter tappets, or the camshaft fuel pump follower. Easy way to diagnose alternator pulley...Remove serpentine belt/drive belt ...spin alternator pulley by hand in BOTH directions if it turns both ways it's shot.

For real ? Been trying to find the Rattle sound problem for weeks , changed the tensioner bearing today bc it was spinning free to much. I do can move my alternator pulley Both ways, Im thinking its te alternator pulley for a day now

An alternator will spin in both directions. you need to lock the alternator by putting a screwdriver or similar through the vents so it stops it rotating. then try turning the pulley. It should only go one way. Quicker test is to try to move the alternator vanes with the belt installed. they should move one way but not the other.

@@dopiaza2006 it does Lock at one way, when belt installed en Turning the little vent with a screwdriver, but once removed belt en when turning the pulley it made a very high pinch sqeeke. Also it make a noice en when sprankeling water on it While running the sound goes away, my problem is my car starts to Rattle when drive after a while, when cold no problems been searching the problem for weeks..

@@dopiaza2006 yeah , I was thinking that also , its very weird, when engine is cold no problems at all, not even when accelerating fast, I drive a seat leon fr 2.0 tdi dsg after driving for a while , a very loud ratteling noice appears, going up with the rpms but also when driving downhill with gear in neutral. Sometimes when cold weather it also takes some time to fire up. I also hear a vibrating a bit when in park mode, do you have a clue why it would be the flywheel when the engine is hot ? Sorry for my bad english , and thanks so much for your comment. I love my car so much , have it crashed one time now build up back from scratch. This is the only prob I got left..

So this Only happens when the car is moving with out throttle or very little throttle. More noticeable when it's on an incline. Presumed to be the flywheel which was in fact in need of replacement but the noise still persists. Any ideas????drop me a comment!
