How to disassemble and maintain a Boker Kwaiken with IKBS bearings

Today, another disassembly and maintenance video, showing a complete disassembly and service on the Boker Kwaiken, a complicated knife with an IKBS pivot. The IKBS system requires special precautions, as the bearings tend to roll everywhere and disappear, and I show those here.
Not my most time efficient video, and I have to backtrack a bit to fix some issues with the backspacer, but hopefully it's still interesting to somebody!
(Also, Today. Today. Today. I should have an editor.)

It's nice to know that it is an easy knife to break down and clean on a camping trip or on the beach.

Definitely count all of the ball bearings ensuring you get an even number on either side. Fill the groove completely with the ball bearings so that they are all in contact with one another (no gaps). Great little video 👍

"So now that your balls aren't flying everywhere..." I damn near spewed beer all over my screen. I like your style, sir. You've earned a new subscriber. Also, this is a timely video because I just received my new LionSteel KUR which is my first knife with IKBS. I'm lucky I saw this, otherwise the first time I would've gone to disassemble the thing there would've been balls E'RYWHERE. So thank you for saving me from what would surely have been hours of frustration trying to round those things up. Cheers!

The first ikbs knife I ever took apart was my Curtis f3 flipper. I had no idea it was ikbs, I assumed they were caged like my Avo. Luckily I always disassemble my knives over a pan like you did just in case a small washer or bushing I wasn't aware of jumps ship in the process. What a pain in the ass, but I managed to put it back together again. I've since took apart my Begg bodega a couple of times to clean it but mostly stick to rinsing them with hot water then using compressed air before re-oiling. Good video, and a solid reminder to leave those pivots alone unless absolutely necessary

I've done this with a CRKT Ripple. Never again. lol Holy cow was it ever frustrating. Much prefer washers. Even on a similarly complicated knife to take apart as the Spyderco Vallotton it makes the process of cleaning much easier. Awesome video!

There's only a few videos here on YT that demonstrate bearing removal and cleaning. As popular as the Kwaiken is I find that strange. Nonetheless this one is the best. I've had a pre flipper version Kwaiken that has sat in my collection for maybe 6 years because it came needing some work. the lock up was too tight. Anyway Thanks for doing this!

Just cleaned y ELB Fox with IKBS. I Only do it once a year, because it really is a PITA.Little tip: If you drop a bearing in the pivot hole, or into the stop channel it's easier to put a magnetic torx screwdriver in it and get it out that way.
@NickShabazz
@NickShabazz 8 жыл бұрын
+Michiel Vanhoudt Good idea! The only danger comes if you've got other IKBS bearings already in the track: You don't want to grab all the bearings, just that one!

Those IKBS systems are a really big problem if you don't have anything to capture them during disassembly and reassembly. It could be the best way to ruin the knife. Great job bud!

Put a flat refrigerator magnet on your table under your work space. The BB's will stick to the magnet, no problem with them escaping the magnet! I did it and it works fine. I guess ANY magnet on your table would do the same thing. BTW, the BB's will hold a bit of residual magnetism, which makes reassembly a lot easier!
@NickShabazz

That's a fine approach, but I also work with a lot of watches, so it's a bit terrifying to have strong magnets in my workspace!

Another great vid. Your problem solving techniques are particularly helpful. After watching this I have determined that my Mini Bodega (with IKBS) is smooth enough as is. And will permanently remain that way. I think Ikoma discovered the cure for my OCD. Pardon my ignorance, but what is the double ended "poker" tool you use to shepherd the bearings into place?

It's tricky, for sure. I very much wish IKBS manufacturers would include a baggie of bearings and tube of grease. But I suppose most people aren't taking them apart anyways.

I'm assuming the comments section is replete with ano and ball jokes, lol. I don't look at this IKBS as a "bad" or "ugly" thing in terms of maintenance, all these IKBS annoyances seem like manageable issues. Also its not like you should be having to do this type of maintenance on a weekly basis, if so, get a different knife. The thing I really like about this IKBS is really the only thing that can go wrong is you lose a few ball bearings. The bearing races or machined into the blade so you don't have to worry about having to press out a captive bearing if you had too. Just replace a few of the balls and those should be easy enough to source assuming one is any where near approaching competent on the internet. Nick have people tried using ceramic balls in these IKBS set ups would that be an improvement?
@NickShabazz
@NickShabazz 8 жыл бұрын
+Jess Hull Agreed, I'd happily own a quality knife with IKBS. It's got some limits, but nothing so bad. And I don't have a good sense of what ceramic bearings would do there.

Just the worst use of bearings in a knife possible in my opinion. Captured bearings are secure and smooth. Shiro bearings have a washer track. I’ve never heard of anyone complain about their skiff bearings exploding out of a knife.

Ugh.. watching you remove those balls with a metal tool got me cringing like crazy. Nick use plastic when contacting metal parts. It’s fine to touch threads with that metal poker but man you are risking a scratch or gouge burr that would ruin an expensive knives finish or action.
