How to Easily Fix and Replace a Spark Plug Boot

I bought a second hand used coil for my strimmer. The spark plug boot and retaining spring were detached from the cable. I put it back together making a better and more secure connection.
So here's how to fix it or replace it, quickly and easily.

I'll add my praises to the already long list...I couldn't figure out why my Makita DCS6421-20 wouldn't start. I eventually discovered the spark plug wire was really loose so I found your video and went back, fixed it like a boss. It started right up! Thanks for helping me learn another lesson. Like many others, this saved me a real headache. Had bought a “spares and repairs” hedge trimmer which would run but died under revs. Did the full fuel system (as you do), service etc and went to test. Pulled the plug to dab some fuel directly into the cylinder and *ping* there goes the spring from the boot. Hadn’t had to address that before so this video was really useful. Hedge trimmer now working! Hurrah.

Good news! Same thing happened to me. I spent hours working to find the fault and pretty much the last thing I did was check that little spring

You are a lifesaver! I just removed the boot from my trimmer to replace the spark plug and noticed a coil wrapped around the tip of the spark plug. "Well, that's new." I'm used to seeing that little flat piece of metal in the boot that holds on to the spark plug by tension. But anyway, thanks for solving that mystery for me.

Thank you for posting this. I just had my five year old lawn mower quit on me. Then not start any more. I took it apart slowly. Went to clean out the plug for any built up dirt/oil. The pieces of metal in the boot fell out. Broken in two pieces. I guess it just got old? Happy to find out it's most likely just the boot itself is the problem. Explaining why it totally stopped starting.

Just bought a new auger from Amazon and it was the only one that came with the bit I needed, was good price, shipped here within two days only to arrive not working. Thank you for a very helpful video upload. I have spent a good few hours wresting with this issue. I must say it really is quite shameful of Stihl to adopt such a poorly engineered spark plug connector when there have been many over the years that simply crimp onto the Lead.

Thanks for this. I went to pull the spark plug from my son's dirtbike and when I pulled the cable off the spring was stuck on the plug. I thought there would have been a metal clip that locks over the spark plug and this was just some home repair job done after the original broke. I follow your vid to reconnect the wire and spring. Thought I was up for a new cable or end connection.

if you strip the insulation material back around 1/2", then make the wire end into a sharp V instead of the L shape, you can wrap the exposed wire around the V tightly, apply a bit of solder to it and then tuck it into the insulated rubber. makes a much tighter connection.

I could only pull the wire through the 90° L bend with forceps. Spraying only made it more difficult for needl-nose pliers to grip. Maybe my boot was more rigid than yours. Like your idea of wrapping some bared wire around the coil; too late for me though. I'm only here to find out how I should have done it!

@@davekennedy52 Yeah, but (as I responded elsewhere since then) ....Turns out there is something wrong inside the 6" ( ?) of ht wire. It's moulded into the coil, which are cheap enough but a) the principle of the thing, b) month by slowboat from China. Looking at doing a splice but didn't realise how THIN the one strand of wire is inside, and DELICATE! I can't find anything on what the anatomy of an HT lead is. The pointy end(s) of the spring coil that fix into the rubbery insulation have no chance of actually hitting the central wire. And by poking probes along the lead to find a place where there is continuity with the body so I can make a splice I think I've destroyed the actual wire! Hey ho!
@davekennedy52
@davekennedy52 3 жыл бұрын
@@johncollins8304 I'm very surprised to hear that the wire is so thin and fragile. Mine were quite thick. I'm sure you could use the spark plug cables from a car if you are able to splice them. I had the same problem with that pointy end of the spring. I wasn't sure if it was touching the inner wire and it just wouldn't stay in place-kept popping out again.Really irritating to wait that long for parts

Can I just inser the metal piece into the wire and that is it? Or do I have to cut off a piece of the plastic and wrap a piec eof the wire around the metal coil?
@davekennedy52

Yes, you can insert the hook of the coil into the HT wire, thats the correct method, but in my case the hook kept coming out and it wasn't making contact with the wire

I ripped the boot completely off the wire and it’s like I cut the wire in half. Is it still good or do I need to replace it?😅
@davekennedy52
@davekennedy52 3 жыл бұрын
You got to expose the inner wire, so cut back the plastic covering, then reattach the exposed wire to the coil spring in the boot. Then put in a spark plug and turn your engine and if you see a spark then your connection and wire are still good. Hope that helps

To solder or not to solder? Ask yourself, Are you A; Do you want the job done correctly, eliminateing any possibility of future issues? Or are you A ; Wannabe fixit man and take the chance that NOT soldering the most important connection in a internal combustion engine is a intelligent choice, that will not cause future engine troubles.

Don't do this if you have a Stihl FS90/130/131 etc with the boot that covers the sparkplug opening. They're exact length, so if you use any of the length, you need to replace the entire coil/lead component. They're not cheap either!😮

I can see that could be a problem, my chainsaw lead is also very short. I've heard of a spark plug wire splicer (I think they sell them on ebay) Then if you have some spare cable you could just join them together with the splicer., and make your lead longer

Why can't it have a regular coil 90° bend instead of that coil thing thats problematic
@davekennedy52
@davekennedy52 4 ай бұрын
Hi Steve, that is a regular 90 degree boot for a coil. Some of the newer ones are sealed units. That coiled spring is what grips the top of the spark plug and is supposed to hook into the HT cable. Not a clever system at all. Thanks for your comment and for watching
