How To Enable DLSS 3 Frame Generation (HAGS)

A lot of people recently asked me why they are not able to enable DLSS 3 frame generation, despite having an RTX 40 series GPU. Well, in this very short tutorial I am going to show you the most common issue why people arent able to toggle DLSS 3 frame generation in their games.
Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling is required for DLSS 3 Frame Generation to work, and in this video I will show you how to enable HAGS (Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling) if your DLSS 3 Frame Generation option is greyed out. This should resolve the issue of not being able to enable DLSS 3 frame generation in games that support it.
For Windows 10, follow the steps below:
1. Click Start, then head to Settings, then click System.
2. From the left-hand menu, select Display.
3. Below Multiple Displays, click Graphics settings.
4. Turn on the toggle for Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
5. Restart your computer.
DLSS 3 Frame Generation is only available on Nvidia Geforce RTX 40-series GPUs (RTX 4060 and above). So if you dont have an RTX 40 series GPU, this option wouldnt be available anyway.

some other info: by turning on HAGS, recording / streaming programs like OBS, Moonlight, Sunshine, etc... cause issues like 50fps record/stream limit or crashing completly. Also SteamVR and other VR apps / Games tend to crash as well. Older Games like Tekken 7, Borderlands 3, Need for Speed Heat, Metro2033 Redux and Assassins Creed Valhalla (tested it myself), spontanuously crash with DXGI error mid game, when HAGS is on. After turning it off, the Games worked without problems. Even the OBS Admins said in the Forums, that for Recording and Streaming, even on the latest Win10/Win11 Version and latest OBS Version, HAGS should be turned off, until Microsoft and / or NVidia fixes that issue. In their Words: "You have to choose between DLSS3 / FG and streaming / recording stability."

Interesting. I have been using OBS and a capture card for more than a year with HAGS enabled on 3080 and now on 4080 and havent had any issues with it. One of those things where it probably works for some and for others it causes crashes unfortunately.

@@Mostly_Positive_Reviews i tested it with Jedi Survivor this week. When enabling Frame Generation (which requires HAGS), OBS starts to flicker. Apparently Microsoft wants to tackle the HAGS issues with the December Windows Update.

Hi. I see you still answer the comments here so I might give it a shot. Cyberpunk starts to crash immediately after I enable HAGS. Doesn't even load into the main menu, it just dies every time. Tried disabling mods, nothing. Just switched to a 4070 and did a driver update through GeForce Experience. Any ideas? Internet doesn't know, as far as I know.

You need to have game ready drivers and studio drivers installed for it to work, just figured it out from @Lotusgeek

For some reason hags doesnt show up in my graphics settings, you know anyway to fix this? I have a 4060 ti

Weird. The only possible thing I can think of is that you have a very old driver installed, or Windows installed an old one automatically. Try doing a fresh install of the latest driver perhaps.

Even though the setting shown in the video is on, I cannot turn on FG in Cyberpunk (I can turn on FG in Witcher 3).

That is very weird. Are your GPU drivers up to date? What GPU do you have?

@@Mostly_Positive_Reviews I solved the problem, I tried version 0.80 in Cyberpunk but it was fixed when I installed version 0.50. I'm using rtx 2060s and drivers are up to date.

@@Mostly_Positive_Reviews hi a 4090 but that's fine I found it, in french it's not called FG or Frame Generation in the menu. That's called DLSS (even if that's not, isn't it?) , description : "planification de processeur graphique à accélération matérielle" 👀 🤦🤷

It's been a while since I last tested MSFS, but I think the issue is you are playing it in DX11 mode. You'll need to change it to DX12 mode in the options for frame gen to become available.

Is it safe and can in hypothetically cause some problems with GPU? Sorry man for a dumb questions. I just improved to RTX 4070 Ti Super from RTX 3060 and don't want to do anything to it unless I know what exactly I do 😶 So, does it affect the GPU in any way except for allowing dlss 3.0.? Did you have any issues? Thanks!

No worries, questions need to be asked more! It was introduced a little while ago to help improve scheduling tasks and is perfectly safe. It is a feature required for frame generation, but I have always had mine enabled since they released it a few years ago. It wont cause any issues 👍

I did this and I still can't enable it in CP2077 on my 4070. It's May 2024 so it should be stable and normal now.

You're not the first one to say it doesnt work, and it's strange. This is the setting that gets it to work for most people watching this video, yet there are still others that have issues even with this setting enabled. We can try to figure this out together, and maybe I can put a pinned comment to help others struggling with this. 1. Did you reboot your PC after enabling HAGS? If not, perhaps try that? 2. Are you running the latest version of Nvidia's drivers? 552.42 is the latest. 3. What version of Windows are you running? 4. Is it the latest version of the game as well, or is it an "otherwise obtained" copy? (no judgment from me if it is).

I have the Steam version and it's always up to date. What GPU do you have? DLSS Frame gen only works on RTX 40-series.

@@melihcanderman Strange, it should show up there. Did you restart after enabling HAGS? There is also a new Nvidia driver, maybe try a clean install of the new driver?

I think it's not because there are some issues with some apps apparently. I personally havent had any issues, but apparently it can cause DX errors in older games.

@@MyComfortZone-wx7dx Only on RTX 40 series unfortunately. But AMD's FSR 3 works on almost all GPUs and is also frame generation technology. Currently only supported in 2 games though but is actually not terrible even on Nvidia GPUs.

Those FSR frame gen mods are really great! So happy Radeon, 20 series and 30 series users can now also use frame generation. Havent tested the mods on Pascal GPU's but the official implementations work on 10 series as well. Enjoy!

Enabling HAGS should enable you to make use of DLSS FG in all supported games if you have a 40 series GPU.

Not sure why you wouldnt get the option for it in Hellblade 2. Do you get it in other games? If so, the only thing I can think of is to make sure you use DLSS in Hellblade 2, as for some reason it doesnt work with other upscaling tech in this game.

Yeah, most games allow you to enable frame generation without having to use DLSS super resolution. I just always advise people to enable DLSS super resolution as well as that lowers mitigates the input latency penalty a little bit due to higher frame rates. But you can absolutely run it at native in most games.

Frame generation is 4000 series only unfortunately. But AMD's frame generation works on all GPUs, currently available in Forspoken, Immortals of Aveum and Avatar.

There are 3 games that support it natively currently, namely Avatar, Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum. But the mods are popping up like crazy over on Nexus Mods for all sorts of games. You can check there the games you want to play have mods yet.
