I think we form relationships by how they feel when they are in our class. We might not get to talk to each student each week but if the students are having fun they associate that with a positive relationship with us. Learning their names and saying hello in the hall is important. If they see us helping others and feel that we would help them if needed it builds a relationship. If they feel happy, safe, and cared for in our art rooms they feel connected to us. With some students building their trust takes time. If they see you showing up each day being warm and pleasant to students while keeping control of the class their respect for you grows.

I love this strategy! I do believe students really enjoy being greeted too. Our hallway is very similar to driving on 95 near DC so I have to greet them once they are inside my room to avoid a traffic jam!

I give them directions and set them loose. I don’t do much direct group instruction with them. I do put up steps or visuals on the board that we can refer back to. I like to let them explore and sort it out on their own….a kindergarten video is definitely on my list for the near future 😉

Working in a title one school isn’t something I do because it is easy. I do it because the students are more grateful in my experience and I feel I can have the greatest impact. Some of the students do not have the easiest home lives and at times their worries and stress impacts their learning. In this video, I share that I work in a title one school because I am proud of it. I share it to be more credible and relatable to other art teachers. If the strategies work in my school, they may very well work for others too. I did not want people thinking I taught in a very easy situation where everything is perfect and students always show up ready to learn. Please remember I am real teacher trying my best for the students each day. I apologize if it came across that I don’t care for my students or I think less of them based on their family’s income, that simply isn’t true.
