In this video Justin covers the basic principles of distance in traditional weapons combat and sparring. He talks about what distance means, covers several different ranges and how to work with them, as well as things to be aware of when closing ground with an opponent.

I have just gotten into Chinese Broadsword and I was wondering if you could upload a video of various exercises and practice methods, both by yourself and with a partner, that would be great! I know there is sword spinning and the basic attacks and defenses, but any other exercises that are good to develop form and strength?

That is a very interesting topic! I am currently struggling with this exact problem, even though not swordfighting, but empty hand combat. I got this sparring partner who is taller and faster than me and I am having so much trouble trying to get him inside my range without being thrashed before I do so. Could you give some hints on how to deal with such an opponent?

Alvaro Wang Hi Alvaro, as always a great question! Some of the topics we're going to touch on in our next video will help answer some of this. We'll be talking about how to bridge distance using timing, tempo, and deception. Of course in open hand combat it's a little different and size is often a greater factor when there is no weapon to account for. I can't speak for all styles of martial arts, but in tai chi (which is a very close quarters style as opposed to long fist or boxing so requires bridging the distance just like broadsword) much of this is done by controlling the center line and yielding to gain ground. I don't know that I can explain that clearly, so we'll shoot a quick video to explain the idea in open hand fighting! Keep an eye out because we'll get that out for you soon.
