Documentary Cinematography Breakdown - How I used lighting, color, lenses, location Canva and Frameset to make interviews look cinematic. Interviews don't have to look BORING!
Today I'm breaking down a recent documentary I was Director of Photography/Creative Director on. Usually I'm not working in the creative directing space as detailed as I did in this shoot but at some point DP's get to maximize their creativity freely. Interviews don't have to look boring. I'm forever evolving in trying to grow in the interview space and add to just these sit down interviews that you see in documentaries.
This breakdown explains how important workflow(the tools that help you bring your vision to life) is as well as the importance of location, lenses intention, and lighting to turn basic interviews into cinematic shots.
We shot with Arri mini's and Cooke S4 mini lenses.
Crew:
Cam Op: Bri Monet
Steadicam Op: Taylor Johnson
1st AC: Mark McField
1st AC: Keitu aka Badbitchsteadi
2nd AC: Simone Alezandria
Gaffer: Justin Jermerson
Key Grip: Jelani

Love this breakdown! 📹✨ I don’t think Aputure makes any round scrims for their fresnel attachments but that definitely would have taken down the hot spot-you could always grab a few Arri scrims for this and use an articulating arm to attach to the barn doors. With the slow push for LEDs, you don’t find round scrims on a G&E truck anymore.. unless you have a tungsten package.

I had a problem with the specular highlight on the forehead on an interview shoot. Everyone one wanted to roll cams but yet wanted me to fix it. What I did was flag the backlight (which was giving us the spill) with a small silk diffusion which spreaded the highlight and made it softer and less distracting. Good stuff!

@@BrittneyJanae Ahh! Got it. By the way, I watched your video on shooting BTS on movie sets. I recently did that on a movie set recently. The movie set were old St. Louis homes, church and hospital. @BrittneyJanae 7 ай бұрын
Diffuser?? And honestly this wasn’t production lighting per se. We used mostly aputure lights which are very affordable lights for production. So I’m not exactly sure what you mean?

📹for a photography class directional light assignment I used a work shop light with reflector that clamped onto things. 📷it seems cheaper and easier to get workshop lights from hardware store along with colorful bulbs. i have not used workshop lights with video cameras. one challenge i see in watching movies with night scenes is that I cant see whats going on. I am seeing it more nowadays than in past.
@BrittneyJanae
@BrittneyJanae 7 ай бұрын
Yea workshop and cheaper lights will get things done when that’s all you have but it’s good to learn proper lighting and lights. The bigger the sets the more important the lights are.
