Trauma motivates behaviors in many complex ways. It often drives people (consciously or not) to go into a helping profession to get a sense of resolution for their own trauma responses. People often intellectually bypass their trauma with education, certificates, and letters behind their names (me at one time). However, bypassing trauma doesn't actually resolve anything, and trauma (our own and our clients) shows up in healing spaces. As a result, therapists are triggered by their clients and respond from their own pain, re-traumatizing their clients. I have experienced this, and so has everyone I work with. So, we must ask questions about their recovery journey when looking for a therapist and what made them want to become a therapist. Open dialogue and transparency are crucial to minimizing the "u vs. them" that is often a dynamic in offices. It's time to recognize helping professionals are only human with human experiences and knowledge in theoretical approaches doesn't resolve their trauma. Please, do your own work before stepping foot in someone else's healing space (your office). Thank you for your thoughtful videos.

Thank you, your video came right on time. Today I have a appointment with the assistant of my house doctor. To talk about the experience I had with my previous therapist, what wasn’t great. I learned from your video some anker point I now can talk about in the meeting ☺️ how I do want to be treated and what is important for me in therapy.

This is a great instructional video, Matthias. I love the idea that the practitioner can be interviewed to see if you fit and if your world views align!! The process of picking a counsellor can be intimidating especially when vulnerable to begin with. Great insight, as usual! Thanks for sharing.

Here in Eugene, Oregon, most waiting lists are a year or more. We are on our own, plain and simple. Self healing is the only way, good luck humans. And thank you Matthias for all you do.

I had the best therapist when i was a teenager... she wasnt even a proper classed therapist.. she would take us out side and sit under the trees. Also would take me on kayak rides. I loved seeing her. She'd give me articles and places that id eventually travel to.... until my dad decided to hit on her. 😑 And i wasnt able to see her again. Because of that.

If you can't afford therapy you go to your doctor and they refer you to a counsellor - if you're lucky - after a long wait you get one - if you don't click - tough - if they're rubbish - tough - you don't get to change your counsellor - I speak from experience - out of tons of therapists - I have have a few good ones but it doesn't last long - that's the nhs way - then you wait year or two for another one and hope they're not crap . I wish more videos were about how to get help if you can't afford therapy . I turned to self help books - out of about 100 I read - three were good - not kidding . My advice - get a good faith - good friends - read a lot - walk in nature - get hobbies - be truthful to yourself about yourself - don't be too hard on yourself - practice gratitude - I am grateful to be alive every day , growing old is a gift - too many of my friends and family died young . Enjoy your own company - read Jordan petersons 12 rules for life - read all of the psalms - and may Jehovah be with you

This was really helpful, but I'd love to hear your opinion on why I should even go to therapy. Im a first responder, and I obviously deal with a lot of stress and trauma daily. But I feel very comfortable in my ability to process my thoughts and actions resulting from my job and life. But i recognize that there is a need for therapy among many first responders. I just dont feel like im one of them. I've had several people recommend i see a therapist, and Im hesitant in wasting my time because I dont see a need or a reason to actually go myself. It feels like a total waste of time to be honest. Thanks for your content, Matthias!

My daughter starting showing me your videos a while back, but we each love ideas from very different ends of the spectrum. I wish we had the means of getting to be in at least one session to talk about the dynamics with myself and both of my daughters on pretty much our daily lives❤️

I was a bit surprised at your use of the word “blind” to describe being unfamiliar/without knowledge when finding a therapist. I can’t imagine you’re intentionally trying to hurt anyone, so I wanted to share with you something to consider. When you use sayings like this (going in blind) to describe a lack of understanding or familiarity, it may be hurtful to those without sight. I know it’s difficult to change phrase of speech that are commonly used like this. Perhaps saying “in the dark” or trying a different variation to make your point might be more inclusive.

Look. I get your point. But if you're going in as far as to make a common phrased saying personal, you're looking to take anything personal. It's a common phrase with no ill intent. If you're not the voice of the discomfort from someone who is blind like you're referring to then you're fighting a battle that isn't even present. You're going on your own rant for your own reasons of yourself.
