Cool vid. Just a tip on knocking the pin out - shift into first, or 5th (can;t remember which), that rotates the selector shaft enough so you can hit the small pin out with a straight shot from underneath!

The way yours was at the first is how mine was years ago, so today is when i found out while in town, it gets so bad i couldnt go in 1st or 2nd, so you can imagine how fun that was for 15 miles until i did make it home. I know this is an older video now but hopefully a life saver for me, thank you for making it!

update: i changed the thing under my truck that ended up not being it, so i took the shifter apart inside and wow, both blue little bushings had turned into powder all in there so i ordered replaced and i swear its like it was the day it was built, thanks again.

I have searched through a lot of Videos for something with clear pics of what needed to be done for this and this is very well done. I normally just go, take shit apart and work through anything that pops up (have worked on everything from Helicopters to bicycles) but, thought, let me give a look for accomplishing this and glad I found this video. Well done.

i would just like to point out for anyone doing this job to reinstall the part correctly as the way it was intended, these guys installed it upside down, and that ear with the circle is for the return to center spring that was missing on this forester. the spring connects to this pivot and the plate he took off in the beginning, so because he put it on upside down, if he had a spring to reinstall, it wouldnt do any good.

also i would like to point out that this shifter STILL has SLOP, the bushing below the boot need to be replaced, they are goners.

I'm about to do this with my impreza 04. Don't think my coupler is loose but it definitely rotates around the shaft where the pin goes through. Either the inner pin fell out...or the hole where the pin goes is loose and a new pin will fix the problem, i hope....also just replacing all the shifter bushings while im in there. Thanks for your vid! Was super helpful. Doesn't seem too bad of a job.

Just did this on my 05 Legacy GT, and for me the pin wasn’t the problem. It was the bolt you took out after the pin. But after fighting with it enough I got it to back out and now the shifter feels brand new.

You seem to be missing the "Return Spring " to reduce play when in gear.Should go between the two small holes =accross the rubber.Maybe some models are not stock with the spring . I've been looking into that because I noticed I didnt have one either. It seems from 1993 to 1998, they have the spring, but the 2000 models don't, or dont require a spring. Wouldnt hurt to slap one on for less than 2 bucks

im sorry to say this, but there is supposed to be a spring between the plate on the big round bushing and the shifter linkage. And you put the shifter linkage upside down. There is a hole on the plate on the round bushing and one on the shifter linkage

A hex screw driver. The pin is hollow, so you should be able to fit a small screwdriver in it and the handle of the driver will hold the pin from falling out. Hope that makes sense
