In this video I show how to change the values for the Processor so that the 4790K doesn't overheat like it does out of the box for some people.
Here's where you get the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility: downloadcenter...
The Values Changed
Core Voltage: 1.1V (around)
Turbo Boost Short Power Max: 110W
Processor Current Limit: 105A
Turbo Boost Power Max: 88
Dynamic CPU Voltage Offset: 0.0mV
Processor Vache Voltage Offset: 0.0mV

Try resetting your CMOS. I ran this fix and it works, it essentially underclocks the CPU and throttles it. Since resetting my CMOS I no longer have any issues and can run default settings and overclock.

I know you‘ve uploaded this a long time ago but this helped me. Just upgraded to a i7 4790k with ROG Maximus VII Hero. Ran Cinebench R20 and it went to 100c. Did this now it‘s at around 70c as I still think I‘ve mounted the cooler wrong.

Thank you man, for posting this. Seven years later and it saved the life of my PC. I had given up on it. Just bought a new RTX 3060 to improve graphics, changed the Air cooler to a AIO water cooler. To my chagrin, nothing worked. Still had peaks of about 100 ºC and the cooler fan throttling like crazy. Then I saw your video, after a little research. Wow! What a difference. I didn't know that the "K' at the end meant unlocked, so it could go crazy for boost everytime. By holding it down like you showed, now I have a average of 76ºC with maximum 86 º C, at a steady fan speed. And I can ramp up graphics because the 3060 can handle it. I usually play flight simulators (P3D v5, MSFS 2020, DCS World) and most of them are very taxiing in the CPU.

How did this work out for you? Did it result in the processor performing better along with more fps?
@sloppydog4831
@sloppydog4831 10 ай бұрын
@harborcree I didn't get better FPS, but it stepped throttle up and down. Thus, stutters stepped, and the temperature is constant and stable, something that got me worried before. Before it got to 90+ degrees, then down to 60, then again to 90, in a loop, if I got in a situation where the processor need to work harder. Now, it does not do that, is stable all the time and games are playable.

Thank you. Running Folding@Home was getting up to 100 with 7 cores running and 82C even when limiting it to 2 cores. Now 7 cores is running at around 68. Amazing, thanks. PS. I did increase Processor Current Limit up to 230A as I was current Current Limit Throttling. My cooling can handle the extra power.

Thanks for this. The high temps despite reseating aio with new thermal paste were causing me massive problems and crashes under load but this seems to have done the trick. I did have to go back into my bios to enable the intel turbo boost (had defaulted to disabled for some reason) before I could get the xtu settings to stick but temps on idle are now down from 60° to around 35° with load temps now around 62°

Thanks for these tips. In my case turns out the "Turbo Boost Short Power Max" slider was at 110W, which is still high for my PSU to handle. Temperatures dropped to manageable levels but the cooling still wasn't enough, so I upgraded the CPU fan. Lesson learned: Stock OEM coolers are definitely not recommended for i7 processors, especially the K variant.

Typically the motherboard is smart enough to start limiting the processor when it gets above 90c or so but it seems the 4000 series were not that smart.

Hmm, what you have actually achieved here is to limit your cpu to the stock values, If you look at the beginning of the video your CPU is at 4.4GHz and after the change it goes max to 4.2 GHz. Basically the values from the beginning are like that because each piece of silicon is different and Intel ensured like this that if you overclock you will not be limited by anything. I tried this on my 4790k and it slowed the cpu down to 3.6 - 3.8 and max 4 GHz with turbo-boost. So I am not sure of the utility of this procedure in case you are overclocking for example. If you say you had overheating issues at stock, maybe it was due a bad seated heatsink, too much termal paste applied or too little. A lot of factors may influence cpu temps starting from improper air ventilation of your case, ambient temperature or even a undersized cooler, what cooler did you used by the way when having bad temps?

Have the same problem since one week. Experienced heavy throttling while playing Dark Souls, extreme stuttering. Looked at the CPU temp (which was never an issue): 100 degrees!!! :-D Oh my god. Removed the stock cooler and saw that it was full of dust and thermal paste was almost gone (system 5 years old). Bought new cooler (bequiet) and installed it. Disabled all "turbo boost" options in the BIOS. Now still getting 49 degrees idle temp, up to 100 degrees in games. Wondering if I installed the cooler correctly. You never know with theese crazy "Pushpins" for attaching the cooler.

Hmm - just bought a new 4790K and am having the same issue. I tried your recommendations - had to download an older version of XTU as the modern versions don't support the 4790K. I put settings that are even more conservative than your suggestion and I still hit high temps. I did see a piece of cardboard or something on the heatsink which I stupidly brushed off with my finger, which probably didn't help. When I idle, I am at 37C - but I can easily hit 100C during a stress test which it takes almost 30 seconds to hit even with my lower settings (84.25 turbo boost, 107.5 turbo max, and 103.75A current limit and even lowering the core multipliers to 41). Any suggestions?

Honestly: Probably just getting a different heat sync. The one that comes with the 4790K sucks and can't cool the CPU enough. If you are looking for something cheap I think the Hyper212 is decent. So, what I think is happening is that when Turbo Boost is enabled it is making the processor work extra hard because the turbo boost settings are too high. What you will probably need to do is go into the individual turbo boost settings per core and lower the CPU hz from their original settings to a lower one. That's basically what my method does. So, I suggest lowering the cores from whatever they are at to 4.3 and seeing what happens. SO make every core 4.3 and go from there. You can potentially have a higher clock speed per core but, 4.3 as a test would be the best option to start out with in my opinion.

It seems like as soon as i enable turbo boost and even after i lower the core speeds the temperture jumps to a unusual number. In your test i see that 4.20GHZ gives you such stable temperture while mine rises up to 90+ on 4.09GHZ lowering core speeds only caused the temperture to go high slowly but still does the same. i also get the thermal throttling warning. with Turbo Boost disabled the highest temperture i get now is 81. i dont get why my i7 4790k started to dislike its turbo boost so much.. Should i try to replace the Original intel fan on the cpu with another one?. My brother knows some stuff about electronics and he said that nothing was wrong with the fan or its inputs. So i am a bit lost here about what is going on.

yeah shes a good chip, stable at 5ghz but throttles, got 2nd fastest on userbenchmark @ 108%, fastest was 110% out of just under 200,000 benchmarks for the 4790k. But got it running at 4.8ghz as it doesn't throttle, only small spikes into the 80's now, idles at 35, sits in 50-60 gaming :)
