Wondering how to fix plantar fasciitis once and for all? Not by doing the same overused methods that you've likely already tried. Here's a permanent fix for plantar fasciitis that will prevent this common tendonitis from ever coming back.

First, it helps to understand the role of the plantar fascia. The real job of this tough structure is to support your arch in standing. It runs from the calcaneus or heel distally towards the tendon sheaths of the toes. Essentially, it spans the entire arch and can be felt if you strum across this area with your thumb. For those that have inflammation of the fascia, you feel a distinct knife-life stabbing pain in your heel when you take a step (especially in the morning).
The reason the symptoms are particularly worst in the morning is that the plantar fascia has had a chance to shorten and tighten up a bit over night with your foot remaining in a plantar flexed position mostly from the covers pulling your ankle down. Even later in the day however, the pain is obvious and it prevents those that suffer from it from walking, running or competing normally.
The problem is that people often times will seek out treatment for their plantar fasciitis and be left with either no resolution to the problem or worse, they feel slightly better but the pain comes back quickly. This is because doing nothing but ultrasounding, rubbing, massaging or rolling a lacrosse ball on the arch is not getting at the real problem. You are simply attacking the symptom and not the cause. So let’s get to the cause.
Most of the time, if you test your calf flexibility on the side of pain and determine that you have calf tightness then you definitely want to fix that since that is almost always the cause of same sided pain. The problem is however, doing a traditional hanging standing calf stretch off the stairs is not going to fix this pain. Instead, you need to realize that the pain is coming from the inability of the foot to maintain a rigid position at the time you lift your heel off the ground to propel your body. It is maintaining an everted heel with a loose midfoot which creates an unstable foot to try and press off of. This will result in an enormous amount of stress being shifted to the fascia to do something it is not equipped to do.
So if you want to stretch your calf you have to place the foot back in the position you are struggling to maintain. This is shown in three different ways in the video. Now, if the pain you are getting is coming from a side that does not exhibit calf tightness then you would want to look to the opposite side glute medius for weakness or a lack of thoracic extension or rotation to that side.
When the glute medium is weak on the opposite hip you get a dropping of the hip on that side. This forces the opposite foot (the one you are having the pain on) into pronation and creates an unstable foot once again. Either way, regardless of what the cause is you can see that it has nothing to do with the foot itself and everything to do with the joints above like the ankle, hip or spine.
If you are looking for a complete workout program that helps you to build a body that is fortified against injury and helps you to build ripped athletic muscle at the same time, head to the link below and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System.
If you like the fact that this channel is created by a physical therapist and can help you to tackle the pains and injuries that have been nagging you forever while still showing you how to build muscle and get ripped, then please be sure to subscribe to the channel as well.

My PF started 12 years ago. Quit running 6 years ago. Stopped walking 3 years ago when even that became too painful especially in the mornings. 8 physios couldnt help me. Surgery was recommended. Yesterday after watching this video, I practiced these excercises 4 times throughout the day. Today is the first time in almost a decade that I have stepped out of bed with no shooting pain in my heels.

There is nothing I can I do help ease the pain in my right foot. So my question is what kind of surgery would you recommend for my situation and would these excercises that Jeff talks about help me rehab from that surgery?

Your comment made me view the video and I can only confirm it! I have been struggling with plantar fasciitis for almost a year, to be honest I have only found out that I had plantar fasciitis 2 months ago. I went to a doctor, he prescribed ice, massage with cold water and anti-inflammatory. I did get better from 7/10 to 5/10 in a scale of pain/discomfort. As soon as I did a couple of reps of the stretch that Jeff Cavaliere shows to the release tightness of the calves my feet felt like new!!! The pain/discomfort moved to 1/10 at the moment!!! It still returns, but only when I have too much activity such as long walks or standing too much time, which I think it means that it is still inflamed but I am on the right path to get rid of it.

I’ve suffered from PF and Achilles tendonitis for well over 15 years. Last 5 years it has been really painful significantly limiting my walking, jogging, or any sports. I’ve spent well over $5,000 on variety of cures ranging from tennis balls, frozen bottles, various bandages, compression sleeves to even electro therapy, expensive custom made orthotics, and a series of PT regimen…nothing worked. My pain keeps getting worse causing me concern that my high mobility days are over ( I’m in my late 60s) even though I’m quite fit. A few weeks ago I was “scootering” with my son in LA downtown on July 4th, where all I had to do was to stand on the electric scooter. After 2 hours the pain almost made me faint! It was on that fateful day that I came across this KZfaq video and it changed my life! In just 2 days of the 3 min routine I started seeing relief and I couldn’t believe my recovery. Today it’s two weeks since and the tendonitis is virtually gone! I don’t feel sore even when I do the “hard pinch” of the tendon. Previously, I would wince! The PF, while still there has gone from a 9 or 10 to a 5 and I feel I will overcome that as well in a few weeks! What a great, elegant and yet simple cure! The science makes sense and the cure works. You see, I started to do rigorous exercise late in life and perhaps never “coached” my calves properly to take the brunt of the impact. So I misused my Ach tendon and Plantar. Now with this amazing cure, I’m retraining my calves to simply DO THEIR JOB! It’s so surprising that this simple approach has evaded the medical community…I could have been pain free a lot sooner! Kudos Athlean-x! Thank you!!

How long did it take for the pain to recover once you started stretching ? I was able to make 7/10 recovery most nights and if not, skipping a day of running. But it’s caught up to me a bit more trying to continue. I’m deciding if I should attempt stretching and going for a brief run, or if the stretch will just alleviate the pain on this run, but I’d be better off letting it heal for a few days, and then stretching to prevent it from comming back. Which is why I am curious to know if the pain has come back and if not how long it took for it to heal.

Since incorporating this stretch, I've been able to WALK!! It targeted an area of my tight calves that the typical stretches did not, and it unlocked my calf like a key. I just started stretching them just like he demonstrated in the video and this stretch felt amazing. I was blown away by how fast I could tell a little difference in such a short time. Same here. Twenty years of weekly pain and disabling life style. From partially torn tendons, partially torn plantar fascias. Which developed into chronic foot and ankle pain. While my treatment team helped me address these diagnosis... Nothing until Jeff's full ankle stretches relieved scar tissue build up in my right upper Achilles tendon. Jeff got any videos for right lean scoliosis? This is why my pelvis mechanics are off. I get weekly chiropractor adjustments which help, some what. And have a stretch and strength program for me, I still deal with chronic spine and pelvis pain. I do variations of clam shells, body weight squats, yoga, pilates for pelvis, glut and hamstring strength.

I've had debilitating heel pain from pf for over two years. I've seen three podiatrists, had a course of shock wave therapy, and also a series of deep tissue massage. The stretch Jeff demonstrates is the first thing that has ever helped me. I'm incredibly grateful. I also appreciate the explanation of what's going on (love his "putting the science in strength" motto). This one video saved me from having to get my fascia sliced in a surgery, which was to be my next step. @@louf7178 .... not sure how you can cheat with insoles. Anyway I did try the insoles and they did help. But after a year I stopped and problem returned. The point is that I'd rather address the underlying problem than the symptom.
@louf7178
@louf7178 5 жыл бұрын
Adrian N Glad to hear it worked because I am convinced arch support is crucial, and this helps confirm my suspicion. It seems to be the doctor's initial advice. What I mean by cheating is that you can't just some of the time - use in slippers, shoes, boots, etc... and using these 95% of any time you're on your feet. As far as fixing the underlying problem, I don't think that is possible - you're plain wearing out. Maybe exercising the foot by raising up on the ball and toes of your feet, stretching the foot toward the shin before getting out of bed (this IS helpful) and not resting the foot sideways while driving (I noticed this start irritation), but I think it is a permanent condition. Again, arch support is critical to minimizing pressure by distributing it about the most foot area (even the slight heel cup of insoles helps). Note that this is what the new Dr. Scholl's custom-fit orthotic foot mapping is trying to do. Thanks for the reply and feedback, and I hope you keep this under control (I have been doing these things without slacking off, and I am relieved not to have the pain).
@louf7178

Exactly - this is a huge problem - I wonder why most traditional doctors / PTs so often do not care about finding the root causes and just treat symptoms... i hope its not just faster money.. btw, insoles did not help in my case much (but i only tried cheap $15 dr. Nate Letkeman I did it for wel over a week. I still have a little bit of it but it is still getting less. Two things that are important that ive learned from other videos is that the shortening of the muscles is caused by inaction after training intensely you should stretch the calf. Also the winding down of the foot during walking should be consistent. I walked, ran and boarded a lot. But i did not focus on relaxing and fully stretching my calf whilst walking and pushing of. It never winded down only shortened and got more tense. Now I stretch a lot and watch the way I roll over my foot and make sure the ankle “stays on the ground” so it can stretch up. (Even with pushing of on my board) Also you dont want to wind down over the foot stretching this ligament that is affected. Its not there for the purpose of relaying power. So roll over the other side of the foot and stretch the calf in your walk.

Possibly one of the best videos on the subject I’ve seen. Pace, information, demonstration. Great job.

Oh, wow! Thank you! I've had chronic, severe plantar fasciitis to the point I had to use knee scooter, crutches, etc. just to be able to walk and every medical professional tried to treat the 'symptoms' on my feet and not the cause. This is truly revolutionary for me. Thank you!

Sometimes, I would come to tears ( often after a 5 mile daily run) because of the pain. It was the law of attraction (I believe after buying, and trying everything under the sun) that brought me to your channel. I just finished this routine-stretch (in which the outcome so far is a feeling of relief from left foot pain). I will make this unique stretching an extended daily routine. Jeff, much gratitude and I can’t thank you enough. I’ll be checking out some of your other vids.

This is by far the best explanation of PF and how to treat the cause and not just the symptoms. There is so much information out there on PF and it never addresses the causes like you do! Thanks for the lesson!

I can't thank you enough! I've been dealing with plantar fasciitis on an off for over 20 years. I've been seeing a podiatrist on and off as well. All they have ever told me was that I need to stay off my feet so it could heal. Something I and most people can't do! Not one time did any doctor tell me there was more to it. I started doing my own research and came across this video. Thank you!!
