This was so helpful! I really appreciate the clear explanation. I already spent $100 to have my $200 serger fixed once, issue was timing was off, makes no sense to spend that kind of money again. Thank you for helping me help myself! And you know what? 8 years after you posted this video there still aren’t good videos about loopers and timing…yours is the best I’ve seen!

@Carol Davison I too have a Janome 134D and it is not looping or making a chain and I can't fix it. Taking it too a shop is out of the question. What kind of needle are you using for yours? I am using serger needles. Seems like the needle is rubbing against the plate. I need help PLEASE SOMEONE give me step by step directions. Also the thread in the needle keeps coming out and I have rethreaded the machine several times. I am ready to throw this thing out of the window. I am past frustrated

Thank you Jasmine, this video was so helpful! My serger was not chaining but after watching your video, I realized the lower looper was passing in front of the needle and not behind... and after a bit more fiddling I figured out that the loopers were actually fine, it was the needle... it was not fully tightened into its spot and so was angling in slightly the wrong direction... after tightening it up and securing it fully, it is going in front of the lower looper once more and I have chaining! Sooo happy for your video, saved me a trip to the repair shop (which probably would have cost me $90 to figure out the same thing). Thank you!!

+I Heart Stitch Art Hello, I was wondering, what type of machine do you use? My lower looper passes in front of the needle and I cannot find an obvious way to adjust it like this video shows. I use a Brother 1034D and am wondering if it is supposed to be like that or not.
@sharonphelps32718 ай бұрын
Thank you both! I was so sure that my serger's timing was off, and was getting ready to go see a repair tech. After reading this comment, I decided to check the one needle that was striking the upper looper. Lo and behold, I had inserted a round shank needle istead of a flat shank! Problem solved! There's gold in the comments. 😊

Hey Jasmine, just wanted to say thank you for posting this video. It enabled me to diagnose my looper issues. When I started digging into it, I found there are actually two adjustment screws that give you more adjustment for the timing. On the upper looper inside the post it’s mounted to, is a very small Allen screw. If you loosen that screw you’re able to adjust the position of the upper looper. For the lower Looper, behind the thread guide is another small Allen screw. Loosen the thread guide and drop it out-of-the-way and you’ll see the small Allen screw. you’ll notice as you loosen or tighten it, the angle of the lower looper moves in and out. I’d never have found those screws without your video, so thanks again!

I have this machine also. It started clanking. Called Singer, they said 'change needles' said not to use Schmidz needles as they are too long, only use Singer needles... Then they said the instruction manual was mis-printed with the wrong threading sequence. Singer told me thread from inside out..not what the manual says!! How are we supposed to know this?? It's worked just fine for a year. Then she says 'oh if your machine is out of time it's not covered under the warranty unless it happened in the first 90 days. Well somehow I stumbled across your KZfaq video and if I can get the strength to turn those screws I will try it. I sure don't want a $100 service fee. Wish me luck.

Maximum appreciation for this video. Wife and I just fixed her ebay used babylock diana using the concepts you explain. For us, it was an allen wrench nut, and the adjustment was on the Y axis - the lower looper needed to shift behind the upper looper in a vertical plane - in case anyone has the same problem we did. Anyway, same basic ideas, and we're really impressed you figured all this out. Thanks so much for sharing. Serging away!

I just came across this today. Go you for posting this, it has some useful nfo. FYI, the position of the upper looper can be adjusted, usually, by using an hex key in the very top of the shaft....no need for pliers, easy to break parts.

I am someone who does this work professionally. As the video describes the distances between the loopers and needles is critical. However, the advice given does not relate to any timing adjustments and may prove unreliable for different scenarios. Adjusting the lower looper from the point shown will change the radius of its arc. This alters the geometry of how the needles and loopers can interact and potentially builds a situation where other settings can't be comfortably positioned in relation to the looper. A 'safer' location to adjust from would be at the base of the lower looper support where the piece connects to the rotating shaft. This position allows movement of both distance to the needles and timing, without changing the geometry. The upper looper adjustment shown can be an ideal way to correct some issues. However, forcing the position with pliers may wear down the grip holding the upper looper in place. A better approach would be to remove the upper looper converter mount at the top of the upper looper shaft and loosen the screw holding the upper looper in place. Care must be taken on a machine like the one shown as the looper's inserted depth is also important. Using needles one size larger can be an easy method for temporarily working around issues arising from improper distances. A common failure that can appear as a timing issue is a slipped upper looper projection. This can mean the upper looper collides with other parts or doesn't pass over the needles correctly. The adjustment is from the base of the upper looper arm where it connects to the rotating shaft.
@Appregator7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, that helps a lot. My upper looper must have been shifted by thick material and started scraping against the lower looper. Now I know what to do to correct it.

THX 4 great lesson about serger timing like reference video of good-working machine. We found (at home) little damaged one of needles which "shotting" directly to lower looper and also made a little damage of sewing plate this way. All was not visible at first look, bad sound of machine and cutted threads were only like result of sewing. When was all "repaired" and needles replaced for new, our "Texi joylock" (JUKI seger model) well working again. No authorised hands of technician were needed. :)

Speaking of upper loopers on sergers, usually it has been my experience that most upper loopers have a set screw holding them in place? To adjust them we usually loosen the set screw then set the distances between the upper and lower looper as well as the distances between the loopers and the needles. Also we sometimes need to re-adjust the front and rear needle guards when we adjust either or both loopers. I am a sewing machine mechanic/tech specializing in industrial sewing machines, sergers, overlocker/flatlocker, hemmers and single stitchers. If your lucky you get an instruction manual which lists the distances for each looper as well as the needle guards and the procedures for adjusting them. I have learned over the years that if the loopers (either upper or lower) are off then the stitch will be incorrect, assuming it stitches at all.

I just spent the last 3 hours trying to adjust the timing on my industrial serger - as you said, there's nothing out there telling you how to do it! as I was just about to give up I watched your video all the way through and realized the upper looper was behind the needles instead of in front, and voila!! the thing is such a behemoth there's no way I can ever take it into the shop, so unless I can fix it myself I'm out of luck. Not taking it back to the shop again! So I messed around with it and got it going. Been working for months but I am sewing on some really thick stuff now and got it off again. Got to mess with it again now. I can hear the needle hitting something way down in there and I am thinking it's the lower looper since the thread is breaking on it. Going to also change my needles and start fresh with those as well.
