I would NOT use petroleum jelly on plastic for lube! Petroleum jelly can melt certain plastics when used for anti friction. Petroleum jelly does loose its lubricating properties over time and gets hard, it then acts more of irritant which softens the plastic itself thus grinding plastic away, people that speed solve Rubik's cubes can attest to this. Much better choice would be a white lithium grease or a silicone grease, DO NOT use ANY lubricating sprays either (includes silicon and sprays like WD40) they don't hold up and can contain acetone. Stick with your white lithium and silicone greases. Promise you use use petroleum jelly on your stick it will wear out faster, and possibly damage it overtime. If his stick is clicking its because hes using PJ to lube it.

My preferred lube for joysticks is Superlube, which is synthetic. I'm not sure where it can be found in the UK, but in the US Harbor Freight carries it. Calcium sulfonate is supposed to be great too, and you can usually get it where boating supplies are sold. It's more expensive and a bit harder to find, but it supposedly lasts a long time and is very high quality.

Evil Poptart I was just gonna get the petroleum jelly when I read your comment, thank you for it! Can I use penetrating oil instead? Or will that damage the stick too.
@evilpoptart3097
@evilpoptart3097 9 жыл бұрын
Robert Jansz Not advised personally. Using penetrating fluids as general-purpose lubricants such oils are relatively volatile. As a result, much of the penetrating oil will evaporate in a short amount of time, leaving little residual lubricant. Plus its used for anti-rust/corrosion so who knows how it will affect plastic over time. Plus if you use PO in a aerosol can it may contain acetone. Its really used for metal purposes in my opinion. Try and stick with a grease. White lithium or a nice silicone. Keeps things butter smooth and will last long time.

I had an older, original Saitek X52 Pro with the exact same sticky shaft issue that developed after years/thousands of hours of use. Bought a new replacement Logitech version of the X52 pro (has the old stick had a number of other issues) enter my surprise was sticky right out of the box. Will certainly try this solution, cheers!

I posted this comment on your X-55 programming video, but i guess i have better chance to get answer on this new video: *"* Do you have a mapping profile for X-55 for DCS:KA-50 you could share (for everyone who are starting with X-55 and DCS)? I'm new to DCS and having a profile as a reference would be really helpful. I might end up changing it a lot with the tips i learned from this video (your X-55 programming video) but would use it as an reference. My X-55 is going to arrive next week and can't wait to get into DCS properly. Btw thank you. Your X-55 review and this video (again X-55 programming video) made me buy X-55 and you made me fell in love with DCS:KA-50. I already bought DCS:KA-50 and I'm now playing it with Logitech Extreme 3D Pro which is pretty bad for a simulator with a lot of key bindings. Gonna spend hundreds of hours in DCS:KA-50 :3 Thank you again. *"* And you released this new video just on the right moment. As i'm going to get my X-55 in few days and now i already know what to do if the shaft sticks in the ring ;)

Great video Froogle. Do you know of any joystick that is made to be used with the left hand? I use a x52 and I want to fly aircraft like the a320 or the pipersport the way you wold in real life (left hand on stick, right hand on throttle) but when i try that with my x52 it feels so unnatural because it clearly isn't meant to be used like that. Thx for replying and keep up the good work.

Vaseline wasn't sufficient to prevent stiction in my Saiteks. *But PG-44A was.* A very thick, sticky grease is needed here to fill the tolerance and "float" the parts. Plastic-to-plastic contact will cause binding stiction.

np, read shortly after posting that that the circuit board is directly underneath so i'd forget about using any conductive lubricants like graphite, PTFE may work but on the shaft that could be a bad idea (some ptfe sprays expand as they dry) so a Silicone Grease would likely be the best option (Silicone is non-conductive & does not attract dust like other lubricants) and should be safe for use anywhere else on it.

From years as a speedcuber, I was always warned against petroleum Jelly as a lubricant as some claimed it aggressively attacked certain plastics, however the silicone I use for my cubes did not solve this issue on my X55. Can I take it this isn't going to cause any issues in the future?

I know this video is old but I really need some help with my X55 Rhino. The buttons(and scroll wheel) on the left throttle work fine from 0% to 99% but when you push it past 100% the buttons no longer register. Something is physically wrong with it. I've had it for two years and after not using it for about 3 months and turning it back on, it suddenly had this problem. Does anyone else experience this, and how do I fix it?

Wouldn't ball bearing grease be better, because that is made for friction applications? I am sure it would be better lube for your shaft, making it easier for the ring to move up and down the shaft. Personally I find petroleum jelly to be too sticky for this type of application. Although in my case it's me applying it to the shaft of each pedal on my Fanatec Clubsport Pedals which made me realise this.

Subbed for the unintended puns. I am going to order my x55 today. I have been flying on the 3DPro and its time for an upgrade :D. Just a quick question...is there any chance that the petroleum based lubricant will cause deterioration of the plastic components as opposed to using maybe petroleum-free lubricant? thanks Pete for the laugh I needed this early morning :) you could also use a few drops of fine machine oil or failing that WD-40.. so long as you do the later with the nozzle on it and only use small amount.. the big one is as you point out getting the lubricant between the plastic and the metal spring cuff. Good old fashioned Grease will also do the job ;) of course then you have to watch where you put your fingers.

I first tried silicone-grease but while it did reduce friction during movement, it significantly increased the initial break-off force and made it extremely difficult to perform small movements. PFTE grease (teflon) on the otherhand worked wonderfully and made the stick movement super-smooth. I'm guessing the problem with silicon is that it forms a very smooth surface-layer on both the shaft and the ring, which causes them to get "glued" together like two flat pieces of glass.

I don't suppose anyone would know why my X55 throttles when a tiny bit of thrust is applied jumps to 80% power. There is no gradual increase in power. it is 0% to 80% then it is gradual from there. I have tried calibrating god knows how many times, reinstalling FSX and the software and drivers from Saitek too many times now that it is beyond the joke. I have got the PMDG 737 sitting there looking at me and haven't been able to fly it since I bought the X55 in July. Windows calibration is fine but in the FSX calibration the small square with the crosshair the movement is halved but applying full movement of the throttles. It has got to the point now that I am just going to give up with the whole flightsim thing because I am sick to the back teeth with not being able to fly. Any help would be so much greatly appreciated.

Mine's doing that now. I'm trying to buy a dry Teflon spray from Amazon UK as that I'm told is best for plastic-on-plastic lubrication but Amazon will not bloody deliver to any of my Local Collect points. Presumably due to the nature of the the spray can being a pressurised container. Frankly, I find this plastic-on-plastic mechanism for centering the joystick a bit of a cheap and nasty hack. The surfaces that interface should be a rugged Teflon-based material.
