I work for an American company in Europe, in a position that the average american would envy very much. The company originally wanted me in the US, but they redirected me to Europe. They do that for as many people as they can, because bringing the people that they want into the US is complicated and unreliable. It's easier for everyone. With the new system, I barely qualify. So many of the points are awarded for having pre-existing ties to the US. I need to have a US-based education and many years of working in the US, before my application even has an honest chance. Why should I even bother? I didn't really want to permanently live in the US anyway. There are so many places which are better to live in, including where I am now.

To be honest if you have enough points on that list and you wan't to emigrate, US wouldn't be your first choice.

I'm Dutch, spend 5 years in the States and qualified for a green card but emigrated to New Zealand instead! Americans are constantly being told by their own Media and politicians they live in the "greatest country in the world", but it depends on how you define "Great", it's somewhat subjective.
@armedwombat68166 жыл бұрын
They define greatness by their military budget and the amount of money the richest 1% make. Which is only sensible, because in all other respects they're seriously lacking.

A Statue isn't law
@wolfwoodphreak6 жыл бұрын
rick james true enough, a statue... Just like every other piece of "state" we erect in honour of ourselves (Even written "statues" in historical documents we continue to use AS law), is a statement of an ideal. An ideal we're slowly, but apathetically surely neglecting. Now it's not law, but if this is then we have to openly admit to the hypocrisy we live daily and not presume to have moral authority in diplomatic relations. It's that simple. Either way I have little sway in it but I would at least plead for honesty.

Well I'm pretty sure my American education told me a document says, "the right to bear arms" and we all know that's a problem. I'm not saying your wrong, but you can't stick to historical precedence. I get it - but Australia and Canada use a similar point system? Australia is actually notorious for it so it's a weird criticism for an Aussie to be making? Denying immigration based on nationality or religion is reprehensible but I have no problem with countries trying to filter for the most qualified candidates? Being able to 'buy your way in' is another debate, at least in most countries using a point system its not just 'having money' you usually need to invest a substantial amount into the country you are emigrating to in some way.

Although I do like the point system and I think it’s a good idea, I don’t think that every potential immigrant should have to meet these. I think that half should be accepted based on points and the other half should have the lottery system as it’s always been. My parents got here on lottery, currently a proud American attending university and about to graduate with an engineering degree. People need opportunities and this is the land for it. Please don’t change that!
@kushal49562 жыл бұрын

Only in America: American universities and professional schools (such as medical schools) disallow the entry of American student candidates in favor of foreign-based student candidates (because the schools charge the foreign students up to 10 times as much, making for a better bottom line), forcing the American students to pursue degrees in foreign countries. Then, American companies hire the graduates of American schools, because those companies (1) find the American degrees more meaningful and (2) because those companies can hire those foreign students for a lower wage/salary with some assurance that those employees will ultimately return to their homelands with American degrees (prized in many foreign countries) and experience working in America. (n.b. That is why, for example, doctors in America are not American born.)
@timoyr29546 жыл бұрын
This seems like it could be a good system for immigration from overseas. Highly educated people to cover for your failing and expensive education system, while also taking in immigrants from South America for cheap labor. As for people being confused as to why educated people from the Nordic countries, for example, would want to move to the US? Money. While the average quality of life is way better, a lawyer or a doctor can't really become a millionaire like in the States. It is why educated people want to move to the US. No idea, why refugees outside of the Americas won't just go to Europe or Canada, unless they already have family in the US. It seems like a much harder place to get a good start in.

I hate Trump but that sounds slightly similar to Canada. They require a means of support.

Hey Jim, is this another “constructed” story like the demolition-run you did on Avi?

I'm not so sure green card are very strict (yet). On my facebook profile an add kept coming up advertising the green card so just for fun and giggles i decided to check if i was eligible. Answered some questions and congratulations, i was. But all i really have to offer the US of A at this moment is my fluent English with American accent. I'm on disability for most of my life now and because of that i seriously lack certain workskills and i certainly won't be bringing in investment being the poor bastard i am. Not a hair on my head actually wants to move, i'll literally die in the US. Dim work perspective plus being a heart patient equals no healthcare equals death. But I'm eligible, go figure.
