Haha, very good question! I asked myself similar question when I was about to apply at Starbucks with my banking background. First, I summarized my one page professional background into just several lines (at the bottom) Then I added all the customer service related roles I could think of on the top. In the end, they want to know what you can do in practice and get a sense if you can be a good frontliner. So I went back as far as my college years and added a job I had in a restaurant, etc. Important also is to add a short summary on top stating a goal (e.g. to look for a part-time role where you can hone your customer service skills etc.) Hope this helps!

After applying online, you could try taking a print out of your resume to the branch where you want to work and meet the manager to introduce yourself. That's what I did. I have a video specifically about working and getting a job at starbucks, perhaps you can check that out!

I can't recommend anything specific, as accountants are needed everywhere. I guess it depends on your niche as well. Are you arriving with a PR/open work permit here? For foreigners (I'm assuming you are?) it's quite difficult to get a job in the beginning, without any connections and references. I would suggest just working anywhere you can to get those references. After your initial 1,2 jobs you have options for where you want to ideally work.

It’s a very bad idea to move to a new country without a job already lined up, or connections, or a VERY in-demand education (eg. Journeyman license, civil engineer, accounting, dentist, etc). Anything in business is oversaturated. Everything in technology is oversaturated. Physical labour jobs are often also oversaturated depending on which part of the country. A lot of places will also throw out all applications with names that seem South Asian, specifically because it’s common for jobs posted online to get 500-800 applications alone from people who don’t even live in Canada and their resumes are all missing key qualifications and almost identical with things that don’t make a lot of sense (i.e. lying on resumes en masse). It screws over qualified CANADIAN south Asians as well because the employers have no choice but to disregard the hundreds of applications from south Asians since no one has time to manually scan through a thousand applications. It’s incredibly selfish from the people who do this to try and get access to Canada, but there’s also a level of desperation and delusion there with thinking Canada is a utopia. Can’t fault them for wanting better, but they can be faulted for doing it at other people’s expense. Canada has the highest youth unemployment rates it’s ever had right now because minimum wage jobs are being filled with immigrants. It’s gotten to a point where it’s a known phenomenon across the country that one (usually south Asian) immigrant gets into a management position and within 2-3 months, they fire every non-Indian and hire all immigrants. Often for less-than-legal wages. Housing is horrendous too with many places turning into slums and south Asian landlords breaking discrimination laws as well as tenant-landlord laws to cram as many people as possible into one tiny space (which is very illegal, and if authorities find out it gets shut down and then all the people who were there are homeless). Don’t move to a new country without a full proof plan, and things already lined up. That goes for anyone moving to any country. It’s basic common sense.

If you are fluent in French, then you will have a better time finding a customer service job in Ottawa, and possibly New Brunswick. I’m not sure about Quebec, but there you’d be competing against everyone who speaks fluent French with the local accent and dialect, most of who also speak English. In Ottawa, French is very sought-after but since English is the primary language, it’s still considered a sought-after skill to be fluent in French. A LOT of customer-service and client-facing jobs require the applicant to be bilingual and won’t consider people who only speak English. Spanish may or may not help, there are very few Spanish speakers in Canada but maybe it could help if you apply to an authentic Mexican restaurant or something like that.

One of the easiest way to find a job is through acquaintances. Depending on the place you want to work at, you can also try to meet the manager and bring your resume with you.

You can just wait until you arrive to download any apps, but I found 'rocketman app' to be useful for checking connections (transport, ttc). For Sim card it depends, if you're here long term as resident, there are many providers (koodo which I use, bell, freedom, telus, etc.). Koodo has worked well for me so far. If you're here as a visitor, I'd recommend you to check the overseas/roaming packages with the provider in your home country.

Do you have in-demand skills or education? Fluent in French? Do you have a journeyman license? Are you a nurse practitioner, dentist, or a civil engineer? Canada is current in an unemployment crisis with record numbers. It’s a very bad time to move here without a solid plan and/or strong connections.

Not without a LOT of experience and very in-demand skills. Work from home jobs are generally for people who’ve proven themselves over many years in-person, or for contractors (people who work for themselves, eg. Therapists doing video calls, software engineers with a LOT of experience, etc). Though there may be some smaller side-hustles that can be done online-it’s just very difficult to navigate those because there’s a lot of scams and if you don’t have experience then you’re not getting a job to work from home. If you have a disability that requires you to work from home, there are some agencies that help disabled people find work. Otherwise, you could go to a temp agency to find work and get experience.

A visitor visa is only for visiting, i.e. visiting family and friends, leisure, and doesn't allow one to work on it. I am not an immigration advisor so I cannot get further advice! In general, nowadays many interviews are held online, so as long as you can get an interview you can do it online from anywhere (as long as the employer is open to that). Getting a job is easiest when you are already in the country. Most foreigners would get a job here by applying for PR first, or study here and find a job right after. I believe there are some other programs for specific jobs/industries, you would need to google that. Good luck!
