my best tip is use view with steering wheel, that way you get used to how much delay there is between steering and the car turning.

I can't stress how brave I felt for changing gears to Manual for the first time in a game after this. How satisfying it was when I shifted two gears lower and: Voilà! I was able to turn a corner!

Another tip, for groupB cars the front window is mostly useless, you'll be flying diagonally 70% of the time if you're doing it right :)

I'd say put the co driver calls back as far as you can manage, then look and think further ahead. The pros are always mentally a few turns ahead. Try it and it's amazing the difference it makes to the flow of your driving. Also try and think 'steer more, brake less'. Especially with a FWD car just hustling the wheel makes a big difference. Watch the pros again - huge steering input, sliding the car to slow down. Not the easiest with a normal wheel or if you're used to the kind of careful steering of circuit racing. Lastly; watch the replay. Not only does it add a break but answers the question 'How am I a minute slower?' Amazing how many corners I got wrong, how slow I looked there. Actual last thing. Go back to a circuit sim after Rallying. Seems easy doesn't it?

1:20 I think Dirt Rally 1 starting with slow cars from 60s is a good thing for that. You learn the mechanics of the driving easier with slow cars. Modern cars have better handling but they are too fast for beginners.

I’ve always found the hood view to be more realistic, reality lies somewhere in between cockpit and hood view, the cockpit view is just too much like driving with blinders on unless you have a triple monitor setup and in real racing you have a much larger FOV than in most cockpit cameras in video games but that’s just my personal opinion

First step: spend 1000€ on a wheel and a driving seat.

Another important trick to learn for any proper sim (and this applies to real cars, too) is to control the weight transfer of the car. If you expect fast corner to be slippery / understeer, tap the brakes a bit just before turning the wheel. This compresses the front suspension and moves the weight of the car more over the front wheels. When you turn *after* that, the front tires will have much more traction compared to rear and you get temporary oversteer behavior which may help a lot to get the car turning. However, make sure to not rotate the wheel too much while applying the brakes or the front wheels will lock and understeer when you turn the wheels too much (again, this happens with real cars on slippery surface, too). If that happens, you have to rapidly turn the front wheels (near) straight and then start to turn the wheels again when you feel traction. The controller implementation in Dirt Rally 2.0 really doesn't support this because the wheel rotates way too slowly with the controller (no matter the config, I've tried and tried) so to fully execute this, you need a proper wheel. Something like G25, G27 or G29 should be good enough. A proper direct drive (DD) wheel will feel much nicer and give better (more realistic) feedback but that's not required to actually control the car accurately.

For 4 WD cars you want to pump the gas instead of releasing the throttle if you feel that the car is getting out of control. That allows you to reduce understeering but doesn't increase the overall speed until you're again in full control.

Just got my wheel setup…. Started out with Dirt 5 and thought I was a natural….until I started this game….Very difficult but a lot of fun.

One thing that helped me immensely was learning about trail braking, ie braking while throttling to slow the car but maintaining RPM for coming out of the corner.

Definitely enjoyed the video! Solid tips with some nice added humor. Time should be mentioned in how much time you can devote to a rally sim. I seldom get the time I want to enjoy my sims so when I do race, I tend to jump into the fastest car immediately. Thinking I'm going to be Walter Röhrl or something. Nope. Lots of frustration. So here's my tip. Went with the t38a gear shifter, converted it to sequential with no clutch, then assigned the clutch to the ebrake. Game changer.

Very good tips but i think tip 9 isn't because your car becomes "loose" if you're not on brake or gas which makes gaining control back harder, so i would say depending on a situation you should either pump gas or pump brakes.

I think a very good tip would be to learn left foot braking and lift off oversteer. They are very useful (especially in AWD cars) because you can induce slight oversteer or even enough to get you through a hairpin without losing to much speed like a Handbrake would. Other than that this was a very good video and very informative.

I would have started with put the camera somewhere on the car (inside cockpit, hood, etc). That allows you to drive much more accurate when you actually know where the front of the car is actually pointing. In most corners you want to hit the apex just like in track racing but for rally cars that may require doing it sideways so you must have accurate control.

I'm still a newcomer to the sim rally genre, though I can finally consequently win on easy ;-). I found that actually listening and using the advice in Dirt Rally 1 in the tutorials is very very helpful. These take a few minutes each, but this is good knowledge. As for consoles and framerate - both Dirt Rally games are running in 60 fps on consoles (even the old generation), so this isn't bad at all.

Best tip I learned is for RWD always apply the gas or the brake. 1/4 throttle will lock the back down pretty good for any curves. More gas as you come out.

it took me months to get good at Dirt rally, even with a racing wheel. i cant tell you the numbers of times ive crashed and ive wanted to throw my racing wheel out the window, but i persevered and kept trying. and learned the different techniques to be faster.

One important trick is to learn "left foot braking" which basically means that you apply some brake at the same time with full throttle. It's a game changer on gravel. How the car behavior changes on left foot braking depends on a car and I feel it's most effective for 4WD cars. If you drive with a wheel and 3 pedals that means that your feet will be dancing a lot because you have to brake with right foot if you need to change gears with H-shifter while braking and you have to brake with left foot while applying partial brakes during full acceleration.

Back in 2000, NFS Porsche Unleashed required manual shift in a career mode stage: drive, spin 180 between pylons, drive further in reverse, then spin 180 again between another set of pylons. Having seen only stick shifts in real life, I never looked back after learning to drive manual in NFS. One hack was to drive in high gear at low(er) speeds on snow. The car won't accelerate quickly, still had a reasonable speed, and turn without skidding. Won many races in Lan parties.

I usually drive the subies now(2001 mostly) and I prefer 2nd gear on tighter turns on them including most other cars. It really depends on the type of turn though and your car. Some cars have 4 gears so 1st is ideal (1st is better for hairpins though).That’s what I love about the game though is that it really gives you the realism of having to get to know your car more.

A mental thing I always have in mind when racing on Dirt rally is always try to stay in the middle I remember I was going super fast down a hill with lots of trees everywhere but I stuck to going fast, also another thing about when losing control and not pressing gas and breaks is when you're car is back to facing onto the road just flat out to fight the the car to gain control, and don't break if you lose control or you'll just end up sliding off the road it's best just to get the car back into control by facing toward the road and then stepping on the gas, I only break if I have to do sharp turns and I know the road is more open if it's narrow I shift down instead.

Another really worthwhile tip is 'Set-Up'. Setting the car up properly is invaluable. Everything from being on the right tyres. To ride hight and suspension bump, rebound, spring rates and anti roll bar stiffness will all make differences to the handling of the car. Also your gearbox ratio settings can really help your stage times. There's no point is having really long gearing that makes car capable of 150 mph, when the stage is really tight and twisty and makes it virtually impossible to reach any higher speed than about 90-100 mph. By lowing the ratios, the acceleration of the cat will improve. Having said that, sometimes it can help if you slightly lengthen first gear. This will help to get off the start line by decreasing wheelspin. Try different settings over and over again until you have 'tweaked' the car to make it more suited to your own preference and driving style.

I gotta say as someone who hasnt had much experience with rally games (ive only ever played track based racers) its quite an adjustment, my issue is as you mentioned on one of the points i am too eager with the brakes and throttle and it ends up wrapping me around a tree, turning early is also something that i need to get used to as well, i often get lost with the pacenotes but am getting better at dechiphering when they come into effect

Tip 3 is really important. Use your eyes for the road, use your ears for the co-driver calls. If you ask me, this game doesn't ask for concentration -- it demands it.

I use a dualshock joystick, with only buttons, so that means that my steer, brake, and accelerator are just max and min. The best way I found to help this is use driving assist, and also a good tune for the car to the stage, that helps a lot when you do not have a triggered joystick.

In rear engine cars like the alpine a110, applying a little bit of throttle to get the car back in control is a lot more preferable than lifting off

Boy am I glad that stepping off the pedals in a lose control situation is my natural response.

With the lift off the throttle thing, on mid and rear engined cars I'd reccomended keeping a bit of throttle just to maintain some force on the rear tyres, you really don't want that thing to become a pendulum

Especially on realwheel drives, pushing down clutch does help regain control, as the real wheel are No longer engaged to the power source

I've played Rally games at phone and used the phone as a steering wheel, it got me some experience before moving up to the real wheel, took time to adjust though.

Look ahead should be part of the tip, right after steer early. You can't tell how early you need to steer or straighten if you don't look ahead.

Honestly i was struggling while driving fwd and awd cars. When i gave up and just drove e30 m3, That was the most easy and comfortable car.

I bought Dirt Rally 2.0 thinking it was just a dirt racing game which I like then I learned it's a rally racing which I wasn't really familiar that much. I enjoy the game but I just really suck at it. I felt a bit good when I tried using slower cars and sometimes I feel like a pro because I shift, brake and gas quickly XD I do enjoy the game but it's just too hard for me to be actually good. But thanks for these tips, I'll try them when I play again :)
