You could use a muddler the way they do at bars, to squish your blueberries. Ever try letting the La Croix stand around until the bubbles go away and the liquid is “flat.” Then try it with ice. There are also waters with flavor but without the bubbles. I’ll bet that with two kids the real problem is slowing down when you eat. So, try little bites often during the day. The anticipation of being interrupted also encourages unconscious swallowing of air. Been where you are with the tummy muscle separation too. Relaxation is key and I think relaxing exercise will help too.

These are good tips - the other thought I could add is to pour the sparkling drink into a cup instead of drinking from the can - easier to avoid gulping extra air from a glass, and naturally "degasses" the drink a little, without having to wait. Thanks Abby- as a dietitian I really enjoyed this one. So nice to see how a) "basic" advice really can make a difference, and b) empathetize with the difficulty of making even small adjustments to the things we enjoy!

@tammycasaletto2490
@tammycasaletto2490 3 жыл бұрын
I see your handle is realist so please be real and truthful with yourself - bloating is normal and no reason to restrict/starve. I know the feeling but it will just lead to a vicious cycle if you keep that mentality and act on it. you need to eat whenever you want and whatever amount you want without restrictions . I think this is the best remedy for your bloating is to honor your hunger. When you don’t honor your hunger and you restrict then your whole digestive system gets confused. The best thing you can do is to honor your hunger and never starve yourself. It will bring health to your body and your mind

If you’re still struggling with making water drinking a habit, one thing that really helped me is pairing it with using the bathroom. I keep a small cup by the sink, so after I wash my hands I fill it partway up and take a few swigs of water. Since you’re guaranteed to be in the bathroom a few times a day, even a few sips each trip can add up pretty quick!

Omg first time I had gas pain, I was in refeeding, inpatient in an eating disorder unit and gosh, it felt like I was dying. 😫 This was weeks after being rushed for surgery to have kidney stones removed and this far pain was on par. I was bent in two breathing like i was in labour. Anyone with gas pain, I feel for you. ***My changes that have helped: rarely eat raw veg. Frozen fruit is a must. Stick to banana or grapes if it's fresh fruit. Cooked vegetables are on the side of overcooked, never crunchy, if I want a crunch texture in soups or one-pot wonders, i throw in some frozen garden peas or corn. 👌 Stopped drinking fizzy drinks from cans! I get bottles of fizzy drink and pour into a glass with ice. This has made such a huge difference, it's unreal. So this is a way to keep Ur fizzy drinks which I know u and many enjoy. Cut food up small at the start of the meal then eat. If u cut as u go, u tend to focus more on the cutting and less on the chewing and actually enjoying it. It's faster too if it's all cut up at the start of the meal. I eat a lot of wet foods, like sauces, gravy's , soups, hotpots etc i think it makes it easier to chew and I can get a lot of flavour packed in if it's not just boring and dry. Example would be a jar of salsa kept in the fridge to eat with baked sweet potato wedges and chicken. 😋

Yay those tips make me feel vindicated lol. If I’ve got trapped gas pre or during PMS I look up “yoga for bloating and gas” and it really helps release it. I also switch the bubbly lime water to squeezing a lime (my neighbor has a massive lime tree lol) over ice and tap water, or I have the Le Digestif tea from David’s tea (it has mint and orange peel so it’s pungency helps me focus on something else besides the trapped gas). Hope you feel better soon!

This is so interesting I have DR from my two pregnancies and have also had a lot of digestion/bloating issues perinatally but never thought they could be related. I am so sorry to hear that your DR is so serious, it can be really destabilizing (like, literally). I know you know it can improve and heal with the right support. Takes a while. I didn't get a chance to take that care of myself right after my second was born but I'm doing it now (she's 22 months) and everything is still salvageable. Mom of two toddlers here sending lots of love, love your channel! xo ps. this brought me to tears, this is my life! so many things on the list when they sleep, feeding yourself properly doesn't feel like a priority.

It is so interesting to hear you say you want to be kind to yourself and not be strict. But being strict in this aspect seems loving since you will alleviate the pain of bloating and getting better sleep which is essential for a good quality way of life and essential for your babies. It seems like over all your best option is to cut out food groups that cause bloating but if you still feel like it might cause you to get back into an eating disorder, it only means more work needs to be done mentally. Reality is that some foods are beneficial, others are not. If we can not balance that, we need not doom ourselves to being unhealthy for the sake of eating what ever makes us emotionally happy but physically unhealthy. We need to accept that more mental work needs to take place in order for us to mature in our palette and eat the nutrients that will strengthen our immune systems and enjoy it.

I don't often drink infused water or fizzy drinks, and usually when I do it's super warm outside. I've found the best way to do it isn't with the personal type of water bottle, but a jug, large jar, or pitcher and leaving the contents in overnight. Mint, basil, rosemary, ginger, and lemongrass(I use powder usually because it is rarely available fresh where I live) can really take the flavour up a notch or two with very little effort and money especially if it is home grown. I often either just give the herbs a good crush or slice, sometimes with kitchen scissors if I'm being extra lazy. I definitely squish my blueberries too, trying to get all out of them that I can. I don't think there would be too much flavour without them! If they're in season, stone fruits and melons are fantastic ways to get some flavour also. If not, any type of citrus fruits also go a long way, as your intuition has told you. Some of my fave and super easy combos are: Grapefruit and rosemary Basil, lemongrass, and ginger Lychee, pear, honeydew, and blueberry Simple lemon and mint, or mint and strawberry And omg so many more. My most enthusiastic advice for infusing water is to not forget about those delicious herbs and spices! They can really go a long way. I also make kombucha, and it has helped my son with his gi issues(along with dietary changes), with the added bonus that all my kids and myself love it. It has a little less bubbly than a seltzer water or other fizzy drinks, with the added benefits of live cultures. The biggest downside is the time it takes, though I make a gallon at a time(for my household of 5), and it takes a total of about 3 weeks including infusing the flavours.i also sometimes use chia seeds and it makes it more filling and more snack-like(or heck, you could germinate some chia seeds and stick them in your lacroix if you don't mind the texture). I use the above flavour combinations and many more in my kombucha. I like to use a 1/2 black tea, 1/2 green tea, and sometimes vanilla red rooibos in thirds along with the others. You could also try water kefir if you're not kombucha fan to add some delicious, more lightweight bubbly that some people tolerate more easily than kombucha. I love making ginger ale with it. So tasty. The nice thing about all of these is that it takes little effort, especially when making larger batches at once, however much you and your family can go through. Luckily for me, it's a whole heck of a lot and it lasts quite a long time. I hope you're feeling a whole lot better, but I figured I'd share my personal experience in case you or others may find it useful. Cheers! Thanks again for another awesome video! Edited to add: Beano! My Dad has a lot of bloating and swears by beano! It has a natural enzyme that helps the digestive process when it comes to foods that often cause gas and bloating such as beans or cabbage. I didn't get it as a kid, but boy do I now

Oh my god, this is exactly the video I've been wanting whenever I go searching the internet for bloating tips! As a vegetarian with a veg- and bean-heavy diet, I get such painful trapped gas. My best routine for relieving it is drinking warm herbal teas (any will do, but I avoid coffee or black tea as I take them with milk and that does nothing to relieve the feelings) and gentle ab exercises like squats, bridge pulses and moving in and out of the pilates/yoga 'child's pose'. Though even a light walk really helps when I'm in extreme pain. I find that alternating my body from a straight position, like standing, to a bent position, like sitting in a chair or lying on my side in a fetal pose, is also incredibly helpful as the curling and unfurling of the bowel area creates pockets of space for the gas to move through. This video was great!

I don’t know if anyone will find this helpful, but I was absolutely miserable for 15 years with bloating and cramps. Doctors, particularly gastroenterologists, were no help whatsoever. I tried EVERYTHING. In my case, it turned out I am super sensitive to starch. I figured this out on my own. Within a day or two of cutting out starch, I went from looking six months pregnant by the end of the day to a flat stomach. I realize this is not going to be everyone’s solution, but it was nothing short of a miracle for me.

LOVED THIS VIDEO ❤️ Your situation is SO similar to mine in every way (except for babies) and it was so refreshing to see more of your human side because it normalizes what some of us are going through. I also enjoyed the close-ups; you are so pretty, even from up close. It goes well with the vlog-style format. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS. Dug this video up to tackle some bloating I’ve been feeling lately. The hardest one for me so far is limiting carbonated drinks. As someone in sobriety, seltzer’s and sodas (ginger beer especially) help me fill that ritual/satisfaction of having a drink that isn’t water and is solely for enjoyment. Gonna try to limit it to one per night for a little bit just to see if that helps.

I drink a lot of peppermint tea because I don't like drinking plain water. I don't know if the peppermint does anything for the bloating but I think finding an herbal tea you like might be helpful for people who don't like plain water. And making the tea becomes something of a ritual throughout the day which is sort of a soothing thing.

I don't know if the beans were part of the frozen soup, but they did study on how to get rid of the part of the bean that makes you gassy, and they found that if you soak the beans and freeze them (without soaking liquid) and then cook them, that works best.

The water will probably taste better if you let it infuse overnight in the fridge. If you have a larger pitcher or half-gallon glass mason jar you could make enough for the day. Also, hibiscus and peppermint makes a great iced tea. I love my soda stream though.

Years ago I was diagnosed with IBS. It all started with a very bad bloating and cramping, happening first thing in the morning without even eating or drinking anything. It was so frustrating and it was affecting my entire activity during the day. The drugs I started to take were doing almost nothing, because they worked only on the symptoms, not on the root cause. So, my doctor suggested me to start jogging or go for more alert walks (seems like when you do this kind of movement, your intestins are moving in a "gas realising" way too ). For me it worked the best and now I experience bloating very rarely. Also, for making water drinking more appealling, try cold overnight infused tea. It is so good and it is so easy to adapt it to your taste. Hope you the best!

Thank you so much for posting this! I was dealing with bad stomach bloating and pain. I also eat super fast (mom of two!) and chug sparkling water. It got so bad I was doubled over most nights. What made the biggest difference was limiting the bubble water. I was having around 2-4 a day. I still might have one a week but the difference in how I feel has been worth cutting way back. I think the next step for me is chewing my food better. (Shout out to exercising regularly too)

i'm so glad I found your channel! I love how kind and flexible with yourself. I think I've carried this identity of being a 'bloaty person' (stems from a judgemental doctor when I was young) for a long time. Embracing and celebrating that my stomach expands could really help. Also, this video was a great reminder to chew slower. One tip that's helped me is to make sure I actually swallow each mouthful before putting new food in my mouth, cause I noticed I would only chew halfway and shovel more in (fellow slob here lol) -- often putting my fork down helps reinforce this habit.

Awww your dog is so amazing! As for bloating, it sucks so much. I mean, I have no idea what it's like to be a mom and trying to deal with your own health, but when I was having really bad bloating, none of the advice ever helped. Besides maybe some light exercise. The only thing that helped eventually is lowering stress and eating more hearty meals. And that, my friend, I'm sure is not an available option for a mega busy mom. Feel better!

Hey! Try watering down your sparkling water! You can find what balance of flat to sparkling water you like before you don’t enjoy it anymore. I love the video! After years of terrible pain, when I was 16 I was diagnosed with IBS. I went through months of eliminating different foods but nothing seemed to work. Every evening I would look heavily pregnant and be debilitated with gas pain. I now know beans and legumes make my IBS worse and if I'm stressed or have a long gap between meals then I am more likely to be bloated. I used to eat 4/5 small meals a day which really helped but there's no way I can do that with my current job! However, about 5 years ago I started running to loose some weight and discovered that it not only helped with my stress issues but also almost completely rid me of any IBS pain! I have my more gassy/bloated days (don't we all?) but I am never in the pain I used to be in. Plus I've now been regularly running for 5 years and have run 15 half marathons :D

I was looking at your recipe zucchini noodle carbonara. I'm a vegetarian and I looked up a substitute for pancetta and olives or portobello mushrooms were suggested. Your cookbook is so versatile for people who have different diets I thought maybe if you had a section for substitutes to refer to you recipes would be even more user friendly for everyone. Just a thought because your cookbook is the most vegetarian friendly book I've seen that also has meat recipes. I just love it and I'm so excited that I'll be able to have a variety of 500 calorie meals. I've found you at the perfect time in my diet journey. I've tried really restrictive diets to lose weight and it just isn't sustainable and I would eventually get sick off it and eat high calorie foods. Your meals are something I can do long term. Thanks so much.

As someone who deals with bad gas pain A LOT, I would suggest eating your veggies cooked - already partly digested, and you can then not have to chew as much - have half sparkling water, half plain water to transition - and my big one - Gas-X is your friend (I buy in bulk on Amazon!), as well as laying on your side if you get a minute when the pain is bad. (and yes, I had 2 boys, so I know how crazy busy it gets!)

I really feel you on this! I have a chronic illness which makes me extra sensitive to pretty much anything in life, I def have a lot of IBS symptoms and I find keeping an eye on the low fodmap list is very helpful whenever I'm feeling gassy/uncomfortable. I ended up cutting out gluten, really really didn't want to and still longing for proper bread, pasta and pizza, but I'm so happy I'm not in horrible pain every day anymore so it's worth it for me. Now if I have any pain I usually can pinpoint what caused it and can dial back a little bit (without cutting out) on whatever is causing a reaction - which can be different every time lol. My personal favorite way of getting veggies in quickly is making smoothies - I usually do strawberries, raspberries, banana, spinach (all of these things frozen), greek yoghurt, flax seeds, chia seeds, water and a little apple juice. Delicious and I love that I can really pack in the spinach without it affecting the taste. Another fave is pineapple, ginger, clementine, banana, spinach and kale. :) vegetable soups are also great and I keep my freezer stocked during fall/winter.

Like you, I only like sparkly water and can't stand flat water (unless I'm working out or quite dehydrated). I believe I have IBS based on my gas and diarrhea symptoms, so I know I should strive to drink more flat water, but it's so hard to make myself do it, and it helps to know that someone like you struggles with the same issue. Postpartum is such a hard time to deal with this type of thing. When my 3rd was born my oldest was having nonstop ibs-D. After months of trial and error we figured out that he, my baby, and myself all had fructose malabsorption. With a few small tweaks my oldest stopped having ibs symptoms and his mood improved dramatically (His pain was causing tantrums). My baby stopped spitting constantly/started sleeping better. I no longer had chronic abdominal pain. We still all eat our trigger foods occasionally (apple pie at thanks giving is a requirement ). It was hard to go through the process at the time, I’m glad we did it.

Just an idea to get you a little bit of carbonation along with cutting down on as much of it: Maybe letting it sit a little and flatten just a tad. Granted, you're still going to have a little carbonation to cause some minor bloat. But maybe with a tiny bit less carbonation, you'll see improvement in bloat. I like to let mine sit for 15 minutes or so open in the fridge or on the counter to reduce the amount of it that I drink. Mine is because bubbles give me a little acid reflux.

Not a dietician although I did do my undergrad in Applied Human Nutrition so the topic of poop doesn't phase me one bit. I cannot thank-you enough for covering this topic and I am sure my husband will be thankful too!!! I've been plagued my whole life with constipation issues and gas surprisingly as a result of my type A, high strung personality. Been to a G.I. doctor so many times and yet nothing comes back physiologically to explain my suffering. I've come to realize it is psychological for me. Relaxing for me is truly a challenge and without relaxation let's just say I can make a mean diamond of some stool! I have found some things that allow me to relax enough to naturally pass a bowel movement although one major one being my entire family leaving my house for a couple hours isn't always practical (especially circa Covid 19 pandemic). Looking forward to seeing if you have any other hints that I can try to assist me with my intestinal issues. Thanks Abbey;)

@@Patriot1789 no I have not. My intense type A - 'must accomplish the world' attitude really makes it difficult for me to commit to meditation. I used to struggle to even sit for an entire movie because I am so hyper active and feel the need to be productive. Although giving into this mindset is truly what creates this stress which inhibits me from relaxing so I really need to fight these urges and let go of the expectations I put on myself. I do know it's all me and my mindset. I should make a commitment to try and meditate and fight my internal dialogue telling me to keep working.
