Dallisgrass is a grassy weed, so looks like most other grasses. Dallisgrass is similar to crabgrass in that the blades will seem to grow outward from the center of the plant. But unlike crabgrass, Dallisgrass grows tall and upright, with mature heights starting around 14 inches, and if left uncontrolled, it can grow over 5 feet tall. The flower head consists of 2 to 10 drooping spikelets, that branch at different points along the top of the flower stalk. Dallisgrass is also a lighter shade of greed compared to other grasses.
Check for any clumps of weeds growing in your lawn. Be on the lookout for upright stalks with drooping spikelets, as they will indicate you may be dealing with dallisgrass. If you find low-growing clumps, you may be dealing with crabgrass. Dallisgrass grows well in areas with poor drainage, so check spots that often see standing water after rain.
Dallisgrass is a perennial warm-season grassy weed and will grow best during the summer and early fall. Come winter, the grass will die, but the roots will remain dormant underground until spring, where the plant will emerge again.
To kill established dallisgrass, use a post-emergent herbicide like Celsius WG. Celsius WG delivers excellent performance on warm-season grasses and removes a wide variety of annual and perennial weeds. Dallisgrass is best controlled with two spot applications. Wait 30 to 60 days after your initial treatment to make a follow-up. Do not exceed the maximum annual rate of 0.17 ounces (or 4.8 grams) of product per 1,000 square feet per year.
The best way to keep dallisgrass from growing in your lawn is through proper lawn maintenance. By strengthening your turfgrass and keeping up with its health, you’ll choke out weeds and give them little opportunity to grow. If you are treating a large piece of property and looking for a pre-emergent herbicide, check out Dithiopyr 40 WSB. Dithiopyr 40 WSB is labeled to treat a variety of grassy and broadleaf weeds. Be aware that Dithiopyr 40 WSB comes in pre-measured, water-soluble pouches and should be used in such quantities.

Dallisgrass was taking over my back yard. I started spot treating with glyphosate in spring and just kept doing it every week, applying near the base of the stem before I cut the grass. Over the course of several months, it greatly reduced the infestation. Now I have a much harder time spotting it. Just need to be very consistent.

Be careful around glyphosate. I’ve been hearing it can cause cancer in people.

An important piece of information that was left out is that the label of Celsius says it should be combined with Revolver to be effective on dallis grass.

My yard was originally a cow pasture with dallis grass everywhere. The previous home owner had some success with getting St. Augustine but there were still patches of solid dallis. I put a sheet of corrugated metal siding (tin) on top of dallis to block out the sun for a week or two to totally kill the dallis. Scraped away dead dallis to bare dirt & immediately covered dirt with St. Augustine squares and kept it watered. Took the tin sheet & repeated in next area. This got rid of the big dallis patches but there are still a little dallis here and there.

I started removing this jerk of a weed by hand from our backyard (~30%) a little over a year ago and it feels amazing to see the work pay off. I'm used to dry CA, but the moisture here in VA really showed me how difficult it can be to manage weeds. If you remove them by hand it can pay off. Good luck folks

I’ve been doing it by hand also. I find that if I can get underneath it, I slice with a steak knife it pulls up pretty easy, it’s roots are not deep like that thorny dandelion, weed or whatever it is with the Sharp leaves.

I just want to let anybody watching this know, as a turf manager for many years... you need to mow this bastard frequently.... when this guy is popping off it will produce those flowerheads about every 4-5 days in my area... celsius helps, but by all means it is a suppressant to be used when you have a thick stand of turf.... i personally recommend combining it with msm, and remember to use a quality surfactant/humectant to maximize the effect on the plant... i would have to read the label again, but you may want to consider using methylated seed oil for this purpose, which may increase damage to desirable turf.... but that should grow out, especially if your turf is bermuda and you are irrigating as well

My entire lawn is Dallis grass. I have come to embrace it, no other choice, every lawn in my neighborhood has it, the seeds will forever blow & infect. No sense in fighting it. It wins.

I only seem to have dallisgrass in my front yard but not all over the front yard. The area of the front yard that has poor drainage, doesn't have any dallis grass at all. Now that strip between the sidewalk and the street appears to be nothing but dallisgrass. And it doesn't always grow upright. Established plants tend to flatten out which makes it difficult to get at.

So, can these herbicides be applied over the top if you have turf type tall fescue mixed in within killing the fescue? If so, when is it safe to do the application? Also, how long after the application can I overseed? I plan aerate and slice seed.

Celcius isn't labeled for tall fescue. This guy doesn't have a clue, as celcius doesn't even kill dalisgrass only suppresses it.

this yard had a LOT of weeds when I got here. I applied a wide spectrum weed killer and then I physically pulled as many dandelions as I could. I then cut the yard and reseeded. it is greatly improved, but the struggle continues. I still use sprectracide twice a year and use a tool to physically pull weeds and their roots.

Mine too . I just started fighting it in my yard last year. This year I stepped up my treatments as I learn more about it but almost every yard in my neighborhood is consumed by this weed. I saw one yard around the corner from me that appears to be well treated and weed free with nothing but Bermuda. It’s obvious he has been taking care not to let weeds take over his lawn. I’m a beginner at this but I’m determined not to pay the pros hundreds of dollars for something I’m sure I can learn to control.
