A wood working/ paint removal heat gun does not belong anywhere near an antique book. A hair dryer will do the same job with less chance of damage. There are also the mini craft hand irons, where you put a piece of brown paper bag over the taped area, and then iron to soften the adhesive. Remember, not all books should be repaired and the ones that are valuable should be sent to a professional repair shop.

I was curious if a normal hair dryer could get hot enough, couldn't find the answer, so I used what I had. Thanks! :) And I agree on the repair part too. There ain't no way I'm gonna try "fixing" a book that's worth thousands!

Also, I'm pinning this because I think it'll help a lot of other folks. :) Thanks again for chiming in! As we all know, I'm no expert!

Hello, Caleb. We have several books that have been repaired through the years in one way or another. After several various attempts to make them look more aesthetically pleasing, we've come to a solution. That is to leave it alone and disclose all the issues the book has. My wife (Tammy) does the listings on eBay and I (Bill) do the grading. So far, we don't have any negative reviews and over 240 positive reviews; many stating that the book was accurately described. I disclose such things as "spine repaired with red spine tape"; hinges repaired with white hinge tape"; "Joints worn with separation and loss"; and so on. In our case, we chose to ask a little less money rather than spend "money hours" HOPING to make the book better.

Congrats on the success! :D Yeah, nine times out of ten (maybe even ninety-nine out of a hundred) I do the same and just list out the issues. But there's always that one book that is just SO ratty from things I know or think I can fix for just a little bit of time commitment. Right now, out of the three thousand or so books I have, I can just think of two that are awaiting repairs and about four that I did repair. (I did fix a few more than that for the sake of the KZfaq channel though.) But I'm with you guys, it isn't always worth our time. Sometimes I can't help myself though! Lol

Some careful oiling and leather conditioning got rid of most of the tackiness and residue from the tape once I was finished with this video. Getting this thing back from the brink of ugly book to presentable and it took me maybe a half hour and I doubled the value of the book. I think that counts as a win!

I once bought a big collection of books. Made the Mistake of not smelling them. Got home and they smelled of cigarettes. A heated hair dryer was the only way I was able to neutralize the smell. You do have to be careful not to damage book with heat.

Awe man, that stinks. (Literally. Hahaha) Sorry that happened to you, cigarette smoke can be quite terrible. Glas you were able to take care of the issue. :)

Hope this video was helpful for those of you who have books that are just being ruined by tape and need some proper care. Again, be sure to proceed with caution, you can do more harm than good, but a little love can go a long way.

I usually just leave it even though I hate seeing it. I have a couple old books that lost the shiny part of the tape, but you can feel and see the sticky part that was under it. It feels kinda hard on some of them and looks kinda yellow. I hate tape on my old books. 😠😀

Yep, I hate it too. Makes me die inside. Hahaha I usually will leave it on unless it's doing damage. Sometimes parts will start peeling on their own and I'll try to just snip that part off.

So, I saw how many of you who said you love tape in the poll I did... Let me just be extra sure to lock up my books tonight to keep them safe from monsters like you all! Hahaha :P
