In this video, I talk about some updates to my previous thoughts on oiling book covers. I hope this is all super helpful for you all!
Here's my top pick:
80% Mink Oil / 20% Neatsfoot Oil
BUT, as I talked about in this video, here's one that's right up there now:
70% Lanolin / 30% Linseed Oil
Here are the affiliate links of the oils I used (I get a little money when you guys use my links, which helps keep the channel going!):
Mink Oil: amzn.to/3LcsST0
Neatsfoot Oil: amzn.to/44F9EMV
Lanolin: amzn.to/3LbNNWj
Linseed Oil: amzn.to/45ZPyOk
Other supplies you will need to properly recondition your book leather:
Plastic wrap (like the stuff you use for food), cotton rounds (like for makeup), Q-tips, several SOFT rag towels, and a place to dry the books.
I WILL HAVE ANOTHER VIDEO SHOWING YOU HOW TO DO THIS!
Everything I've learned from my years of experience is completely free here, no gimmicks, no paywalls. I'm here to help more people start a side hustle (or career) that helps them get a step up in life! I have some affiliate links, which you can choose to use or not--if you do use them, I am compensated financially and that helps me keep this channel alive!

Morning... I have an early 19th century "Pocket" Bible...the leather is very dry, and flaking in some areas. I recently purchased a small tin of some Pecard's "Antique Leather Conditioner." It is to be applied by hand, left to soak in and dry. I'm looking for a product and tecnique that a museum/antique conservator might employ. Your thoughts, please? Just discovered your channel and I'm enjoying what I've seen so far, thank you...

Glad you're liking the channel! :) Sorry, but I don't have any tips pr techniques that pros like that would use for that company's conditioner. Usually soaking something is a no-no, hence why I have no tips. Sorry. That being said, when oiling, the professionals who do oil books rub in the oil using small concentric circles, like how I did in this video. It could be worth trying that same method with your conditioner, but I really have no tips for that one as I've never used it and haven't ever heard of conservators or museums using it. Not to say it wouldn't work, leather is leather, but I just don't know about the specifics of your stuff.

@@davestelling Hope you can get your Bible back up to snuff! I just finished rebinding and cleaning up an ~1880s for a friend and am about to oil the 1856 one that I bring to church every week. They last for ages when treated well!

Just saw in the news that Oregon is claiming water rights and putting farms out of biz. Good topic, but does the oil add value to the book?

I was just talking to my family about that one, they've changed a lot of the rules of late--I'm hoping that Eastern Oregon codes the state soon, they're working on leaving and have already voted to leave. Water rights in Oregon are (unfortunately) publicly owned, so there's no getting ground water without permits and all of that process. Luckily, I've heard, you can keep the rainwater you collect, which is nice. Just my two cents. In some cases, yes. I think oiling adds a ton of value because it takes a leather book from being super ratty to actually usable. Beyond that, even leather books that don't look too bad can get oiled and look decades younger, which makes my books stand a head and shoulders above the rest, and I think that demands some premium. I know that I've asked and received a chunk more than others because my books are oiled and look cared for.

I keep hearing people talking about the changes and it really is disgusting what those dirtbags in Salem, Oregon is pulling on us. Especially since this state is in no way wanting for water for, I'd argue, the majority of the state. Alas, I'm fixing to go to the part of the state that is a little water scarce, but that's because I like cheap prices and a challenge!

@@thriftingsisters1226 They'd know about it no matter what you do, they're using satellites to bring down those big and scary market gardens and family farms. (Sarcasm about them being scary. Lord, help us.) For me, once I get the ball rolling for my farms and such, I'll be using ponds and the ground's natural water retention to hold the majority of my water. Don't think there are tanks or barrels big enough while still being affordable that'll meet my needs otherwise! :) (Catchment is legal, no permit required, and is encouraged in some places. ...For now. I say come and take it if they try to change that. Got two boxes of 'wireless hole punch bits' in front of my bookshelf behind me in every video!) ...Now I've just gotta math out what all I'll need based on the 8 inches of rain average and usage and needs and all the funzies!
