I just wanted to say a few things that may be of interest to your readers. I do my peas exactly like you are doing except I use a deep bottom tray instead of shallow. Come time to bottom water, I put in 4 cups of nutrient water and continue to refresh twice a day. The peas love it and fill that deep bottom tray with roots! After I cut once, I just continue with them under the lights and they grow back again from the same seeds, no need to re-germinate. They will even do it a third time but they are not as crunchy so I only use the first 2 harvests. And thanks for your great videos.
@longshottv1113
@longshottv1113 3 жыл бұрын
Did how many days does it take for the peas to grow the second time? How is the yield compared to the first harvest?
@highway1052
@highway1052 3 жыл бұрын
@@longshottv1113 Since the root base is firmly established, the re-growth seems to be about 3 days shorter than the first time around and the yield is just as good. Speckled peas put out a massive root base and will really soak up the water. The biggest problem you will have at this point is mold. Since some of the original seeds didn’t germinate they will be dying off and mold will want to grow. Use your fungicidal solution of choice and spray twice a day for a couple of days and do not try to top water after you start bottom watering. If you have good circulation, right temperature and acceptable humidity, the re-growth will go well. You can re-grow quite a few times, but the third cutting is not as crisp so I don’t try to sell them and I usually stop after the second cutting.
@highway1052
@highway1052 3 жыл бұрын
@Derek Bartlett I use Fox Farms hydroponic liquid nutrients 3-2-6. Not necessary for the first cutting since the seeds provide the nutrients, but I always use nutrient solution after that.

Sorry this is so late of a comment! But do you use 4 cups of water every time you watered your peas? 4cups in the morning and 4 cups at night?
@highway1052
@highway1052 3 жыл бұрын
@@abecarloto1185 Not at all. I just refresh the water so there is always about 4 cups of water there. That way you are actually growing with the Kratky method. Once they have established a root base they drink a lot of nutrient water.

Thanks for making such informative videos. Ive never weighed my sprouts before and while i grow much smaller amounts weighing them down made such a difference in my mung beans.. I am starting a small tray of marrowfat peas later and have my brick all ready. I know marrowfat peas are not as sweet as other types but i really really like the intense *pea* flavor they bring to the stirfry. The flavor really holds up in toasted sesame oil/vinegar salad dressing too. And yes my chickens go bonkers for the root mass in wintee. Lol😊🐔🐓🐤

I'm following your instructions to the T but on day 4, when I take the peas out of and I bottom-feed them water/kelp solution ailyl, the roots that are still visible on the top of the tray start to dry out. Some roots seem to thin out, turn brown and then thicken again when they go under the mesh tray. I'm worried this will kill the affected peas. Any advice would be much appreciated!!!!! =)

Thank you so much for the support! You can try misting the roots on the surface till they full make it down to the bottom-watering area... Try continuing to mist until 95% of the roots are getting to the water source. Hope that helps! For harvesting you can use a fishing line. Put the shorter side of tray against your body. Hold the fishing line with your two hands firmly. Put the line over the lips of the try on opposite side of the tray. Pull the lines toward your self very fast. You will see all of them cut cleanly and uniformly.

since the roots get so strong it might be better to not use the standard bottom watering technique (by having holes in the middle tray) and instead use the conventional way of growing plants (just some soil) that u can easily discard once its finished growing ive also found that plants that do have such a heavy root structure (like for example wheatgrass that ive done) do have the oddity to them that u can "grab them by the hair" (of sorts xD) and lift them up WITH the soil "exactly" the day ud want to bottom water them (of course without ripping them out of the ground!) - and then simply "bottom water them" by filling THAT tray with water (instead of the usual one below) - since this even works with 2 inches thicc soil it prolly will work even better with ur 0.5-1 inch soil

Harvested a tray and let it regrow to a full 4 to 5 inches tall TWICE!! Are there any studies regarding the nutritional value declining as they continue to grow like that? Would you all be willing to try harvesting a second and third cut from the same tray and presenting the results? I will begin taking some video footage soon of my own microgreens business...inspired by your AWESOME CONTENT!! Thanks so much!!!

Great Video ! Question: putting the heavy weight on & off twice a day during the germination wouldn't hurt the sprouting seeds?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
We’ve never noticed it hurting them and we’ve been doing it for a year now! As long as you don’t throw it on them... use something care when placing it, but they are really resilient plants! They are very strong as a group :) 🤗🌱🌱

Great video, thanks! I don't have ocean solution and I'm on day 4. Will it work ok with just water?

Thank you! I'm just wondering, are the seeds meant to be essentially compressed by the tray on top as they germinate? Why is that done? Wouldn't that hurt them or keep them from growing? Or is it not meant to touch the actual seed/plant?

hi, I just noticed that you didn't spray the 3% hydrogen peroxide solution on peas whereas in sunflower seeds you often do it. Is it ok to spray that also here? ty!

Would it be possible to start adding seed measurements in cups etc...? For those just getting into it and that don't have a scale

Great video. Do you OS solution only once or is that part of daily watering? What is your dilution ratio you use for OS? Do you use OS in all your grows?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
We use it for everything, dilution ratio is 0.5oz OS per gallon of water, we daily water with it once the plants are in the light and starting their growth.

Hello guys, first of all thanks for all your video. I have two questions, just starting now:) 1. If you are not (don’t know if you keep doing this way) using soil, tap water is enough? 2. Not sure if I understood correctly. One tray 250gr of pea seeds? Thanks :)

"I can smell the nice pea smell too". Man ive been feeling pretty down with my financial situation. I thought of growing some of these. I hope the puns I can use with "pea" can make things a little better

Hi, very informative video, liked very much. Further I am unable to find the 1020 No hole tray in the supplier link, it would be very helpful if you could provide the link of no hole tray supplier. Many thanks.

Hi there! Question for ya - Is there a reason why you use the mesh tray instead of the tray with holes that I have seen you use before? I'm curious if the peas will root okay with out that exact type of mesh tray you're using in the video. Appreciate you guys so much! Thanks again.

I am on day 9 of my first tray of speckled peas. No medium. I did put weight on them for 3 days, and put a blackout dome on for 2 days to try to get them to stretch. They have been under the fancy full spectrum 300 w folding light ever since, watering twice per day with nutrients. They look beautiful and green, they smell lovely, and the roots are gorgeous, but the stems seem to be shorter than they should be and I don't have any tendrils on top. Do you think I just need to wait a few more days? Yours are definitely doing better than mine.
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I would weight a few more days! Peas tend to be very short for the first few days, then they randomly decide to get taller and start putting out tendrils! Just be sure to taste test them to make sure they aren't getting to woody or bitter and you should be fine 🥳
